Saltwater Boat Fishing Reports / Re: Still Paying Dues 7/6

You’ll get one. I like a dead Mack on flyline and one under a float 150ft back or so and 12ft down. “Bump troll” or “power drift” an area if the drift sucks. Kick the motor in gear for 20-30 seconds then float for 2-3 minutes. Can’t tell you how many times I’ve been hit in the first few seconds of the bump.

A drift sock might be in order for the breezy conditions, I can only imagine how fast the Mosquito gets blown off a spot. Nice haul for the freezer you got there !

I have one and it helps but in order for it to open you have to be drifting pretty fast and when that happens it only slows you down for a good slow troll or thresher drift speed no really rock fishing speed.
A parachute might be better. I’ve thought about it but they’re expensive

I would maybe consider the haul if I knew I was getting bit, but I’m gonna wait til they get closer. How does that World Cat ride?

It’s like it’s on air bags, rides like a Cadillac. Makes me really want one. We did 28mph out in 3ft with slight chop and felt like glass, did 24-25mph with a larger following sea and chop and could hardly notice. Barley any pitching on the rollers and plenty of power. Still had another 1200 RPMs in reserve.

We did around 90 miles and burned 27 gallons with twin engines and mixed fuels. (Stored gas, stabilizer and new gas).

Saltwater Boat Fishing Reports / Shake down trip
« on: June 10, 2023, 04:19:24 PM »
My buddy got his 27ft world cat out of dry storage, updated some electronics and wanted to do a shake down trip…

We pushed off the dock at 9am on Thursday and had to quickly power right back to it because we didn’t have steering… added fluid, bled the lines and after 25 minutes of turning valves and watching bubbles we had steering again!
Only one bait tank wanted to fill up and the other wasn’t pushing a lot of water so we opted to just go poke around and troll some lures.

Left DP harbor at 10am

Stopped on several empty paddies until we reached the 277 then found one with about a dozen Mola and some rat yellows. Saw a boat about a mile away sitting still for about 30 minutes while we messed around with this paddy and decided to roll over and see what they were doing without blowing them up on the radio. Stopped short about 300 yards and continued at idle when the guy in the tower started throwing up his hands like we were about to run him over… or his kite 200ft in front of us 🤣 apparently they were putting up a kite and we did not see the white kite and balloon against the white/grey clouds and I saw their bait go 20ft in the air and realized what was going on.
Oops.
Looked south and seen a bunch of terns and bluefin blowing up so we hooked north around them, put the mad macs out and cut south to get in front of the fish. We got one hit on the orange mad mac but it didn’t stick. Just ripped some line out.
Saw some breezers and birds in another spot close by and set up to pull across them when a center console came hauling ass into them and pulled up next to 2 spear fishing floats… no flags anywhere, so I had to re adjust to not snag some spear fishermen (saw their video later and they killed it though).

Wind picked up and we wanted to be In by 4 so we trolled back towards the 277, saw lots of birds and paddy’s, didn’t stop on the paddy’s but seemed like the ones west of 277 were holding. No hits and after we got east of the 277 we pulled lines and hauled ass back to DP.

The fish are here. Little far for the inflatable but if you have a larger boat get out there!

These boats are quite amazing and you did an excellent job bringing them to light. We have surely shown what they can do but I believe we have only scraped the surface.

Well that was quite the effort. I don't hear too much about the mosquito fleet working night bites so interesting to hear of the attempt. Whales at night sounds very unnerving. Being sharked out at night for the bluefin bite isn't something I considered but makes a lot of sense.

Lots of life out there 8) 55 miles out  is pretty far :o It would be funny if you saw a Mosquito with a 4HP cruise by  ;D

6 gallons will get me there and back, but my lower back would be dust.

I’m down to go when you are. I’ve been looking for a good window to make the run to SCI and then hit the tuna grounds at night.

I got mine in early 2022 but I was under the impression that at that time everyone was required to get it. I may have misread the guidelines.

It’s just a money grab and about 6 hours of online courses you can do in 2 or 3.

Coming off a High pressure system turn on the bite in my experience. And it’s not hourly it’s by the day or week.

Not sure if the bay sharks count but Donovan’s female leopard (56”, estimate 60” total if it had the tail” and 32-34” brown smoothie were caught between 9 and midnight during the bar fight in north county SD. Both on Mack’s.

Was it the circles I gave you? Did I give you circles?

I like circles, still haven’t caught a 7 gill on one though. Quite a few 6 Gills, but on 18/0 and 20/0.

That’s a great night of fishing with your kid.

The first time my dad really heard me swear, we were kayak fishing and I caught a good sized sarcastic fringehead and it proceeded to come off the hook, fall into my lap, and attempt to chomp at my jewels. He heard every 4 letter word in my vocabulary and I haven’t hesitated since.

I’m not ready for that! Although I do think he needs a stronger vocabulary but also needs to know how to use it. These kids are so passive on the field and afraid to run through 1st basemen and nobody talks crap to the pitcher. I heckled a coach once and got shushed by all the moms. It’s a nightmare.

Salt Water Shore Fishing Reports / Our bat fight
« on: April 16, 2023, 02:58:01 AM »
I really wanted to be able to join the crowd and hang out for the evening gathering that usually happens but with baseball and an ear infection that popped up overnight I had my hands full. By the time we were able and ready to get on the road SD didn’t have a fish on the board and the biggest was a measly 32.5”…

I wasn’t able to pre fish south SD like I had in the past but I knew there were bats closer to home… unfortunately they weren’t in the mood to play today.

We did get on fish though and the big leopard I thought for sure was a 40” bat. I’m out of my game and can’t even tell a fish by tip action anymore lol.

Donovan was the main character for us tonight and got a 42.5” butterfly ray, 56” leopard (with stub tail) and a brown smooth hound. We also had a few bait stealers and short strikers which made me fish in freespool the majority of the time.

I’ll post pics in the bat fight thread but here’s a video I wiped up!
Also, I know he’s using some language that’s questionable and I’ve talked to him about it. But when a bunch of boys get together on and off a field they pick up on stuff each other say. I also whole heartedly talk sh!t to every fish I hook whether he’s with me or not so it’s partially my fault too.

Hope you enjoy

Man, Donovan’s leopard had me thinking 40” bat and securing it for us. He’s getting good and should have it in the bag next year!

Congrats to VC for the win! And everyone who actually caught a bat, I salute you.
I need to do better scouting next year.

Saltwater Boat Fishing Reports / Re: Good Bassing 4/5
« on: April 06, 2023, 09:17:59 AM »
What depth are you targeting?

Been seeing some good halibut come out of the surf and also 80-90ft. We targeted 50-80 last time and got a bunch of bass.

I’ve only bounce balled without bait once and used a 5” white big hammer with an 8/0 Aki twist hook, no lead head, 2ft behind a dodger and 6ft behind the ball. Got 3 halibut if I remember right, no legals but no bycatch. It takes quite a bit of weight to keep straight up and down with a dodger though.
