I've moved back to the Philippines since Dec 2015.  Needed to feel the burn again and drag screaming run, so I joined a local fishing club.  I joined the Philippine Game Fishing Foundation (PGFF) fishing club and off I went with my friends
to Santa Ana Cagayan for a PGFF sponsored fishing tournament.  It was a 14 hour road trip to the northern most tip of Luzon island.  A place renowned for Blue and Black marlins, sailfish, hoos, and GTs.  My no.1 goal was to hookup a GT. It's been many years since I felt the drag screaming run of a GT when I was stationed in Guam.  The club has a very nice compound complete with airconditioned rooms with hot showers, a pool, full blown kitchen, launch ramp, and its own beach. The club also owned a couple of 23' pangas you can rent for about $100 per day + gas. There are also local banca outriggers you can hire if you choose to do so.
Truly an awesome place for anglers. As per my friends, jigging for GTs was a sure way to catch one. The 1st day was a light tackle competition limited to PE2 (20lb) main line. I was ill prepared, as most of my reels were loaded with 40lb and 80lb spectra.  The only reel I had loaded with PE2 line was my small Van Staal VM150
reel which I used for surffishing in OC. I didn't have any spare spool of PE2 lines either.  So the VM150 will have to do. The only problem was, by the time my jig reached the bottom and coupled with the drift of the boat and the currrent, I was only left with a few yards of spectra on the VM150. Hopefully you won't get bit
till the jig was halfway up and have more line to spare on the spool for the initial runs of the GT. So I briefed the boat captain to be fast and be on the ready to move if I got bit to offset the run of the GT,  The panga we rented had a fish finder, a must if you're jigging.  Unfortunately it wasn't working right.  So we were jigging blind. It's been quite some time since I did the vertical jigging.  It's quite exhausting.  Coupled with the tropical heat, it will dehydrate you fast. I was drinking gatorade like crazy. I did every jigging stroke known to jigging fanatics, (long stroke, short stroke, high pitch, low pitch) to include the Cali yoyo. It was a muscle numbing exercise. It was drift, drop, jig, reset, drift, drop, jig...over and over again till you got hit. I was dropping the 100gm gold colored Charkbait CB Wedge jig that my wifey picked while I was prepping and packing for the trip.  After so many drifts and drops, I was getting frustrated. Still, You gotta jig on.
Finally, on one of the drifts, I got hit hard! I looked at my spool, and I estimate I only had about 15 to 20 yards of line left.  I was screaming at the captain to start the engine as the GT started pulling line fast. Fortunately, the captain was on the ball, and the boat was moving in reverse, and I started recovering line.  I got my first GT on the boat in no time.  Between me and my boat buddy, we landed a total of 7 nice GTs, and some groupers at the end of the day to win the light tackle competition.

This was last Saturday's session.  After getting no bites at the beach, I joined my fishing buddy at the small pier.  He was fishing chovies, while I was casting small jigs catching macks for bait.  He got a massive hit, and I could tell it was a nice one.  Turned out to be a whopper halibut.  Damn that butt was huge, the video doesn't do justice.  I went down the ledge and he handed me his net. Well that net was a bit too small for the size of the halibut he had on the other end of his line.  I was afraid the butt will just go ape sh!t and either pop the hook or bust his line.  I didn't know what size of leader he was using. So I decided to just try and lip the butt with my pliers.  My pliers was about 4 inches from the butt's mouth while holding on to his leader trying to keep the butt from going under the pier and rub his line against the sharp edges of the pier when his line parted!  Aaarrggg!  What a heart break!!!  I decided to dropper loop a live mack I caught, hoping there are more monster butt in the area.  After about an hour of soaking, I got a massive hit.  By the time I got to my rod, the line went slack.  I kept watch on the rod hoping for whatever bit it would come back.  Nada!  Reeled in my line to check the bait, and found out all what's left of the fat mack was the head.  That's all she wrote.

Salt Water Shore Fishing Reports / Nov 7 Morning Session
« on: November 07, 2015, 05:14:59 PM »
Woke up around 4:30 AM today, thought I'd go and start soaking before sunrise.  Made me a cup of coffee and went out to have a smoke.  Damn it was cold!  Decided to wait a bit longer and hit the surf at sunrise.  Got to the beach around 7AM and brought one long rod for soaking and a light setup for casting jigs.  Was hoping that the big critters are back.  It has been many weeks now with no bats or leos.  I got some nice hits on the long rod on a long soak, but I knew they were not the right kind.  Decided to start throwing jigs to reduce the boredom.  Slow bouncing the jig, I got hit by a sand bass.  The water was very clear, and I saw some small butts following my jig as it nears the beach.  It gave me hope that maybe there are bigger models around.  Nada.  Decided to pack it up, and go move to the rocks for more  bass.  Hooked and released some more bass and macks.  Then on one of my casts, I hooked a fighter.  Thought at first it might be a nice hali.  It turned out to be a nice bone.  Surprised they're still around.  Decided to keep it and use it as bait for my next sesh.  Decided to call it quits and headed home.  Turned out to be a nice session!  I think my GoPro finally said no mas.  Not sure if it's the camera itself or the battery that finally kicked the bucket.  Some pics I took using my cell phone.

Salt Water Shore Fishing Reports / 24 Oct session
« on: October 25, 2015, 12:08:52 PM »
Well, the big ones are still a no show.  Started soaking mack at around 5PM.  Got a hookup, turned out to be a 18" Sand Bass.  Unhooked and released it.  Hey at least I'm not going to to go home wearing a stripe on my back.  ;D  Threw another mack...long soak..not even a sound on the dinner bell. I noticed my rod tip would slowly and slightly bend and then straighten out again. Hmmm..must be my line is snagged by some eel grass.  Started reeling in my line to reset, and it felt like I'm snag to some debris.  Kept reeling it in, and I thought at first it was a jumble of kelp, and then this good sized octopus is what greeted me. Wow!  That's a first!  Unhooked and released it.

As always, nothing beats the view of a setting sun.

Got to my AO around 4:30 PM. Tide has transitioned to low. Brought two combos with me.  Threw a mack head and a mack tail.  My offshore tuna casting rod with the mack tail kept getting hits. About an hour later, I checked it and the tail was pretty much just skin and bones.  Decided to try half a fillet of the center body of a mack and threw it out.  After a about 20 minutes, something finally inhaled the fillet and took off like a freight train.  Kept adjusting the drag as the monster just kept dumping line fast.  At almost full drag I finally slowed it down. Then the battle begun.  That offshore PE3-6 tuna casting rod was at uber bendo.  Friggin awesome rod, so easy on the body compared to my Daiwa Sealine.  As I was taking line back, I could feel the monster giving some burst of strong pulls.  Trying to take it easy as I was afraid my 50LB copolymer topshot might reach its breaking point. At the same time I kept keeping an eye on my other rod hooked to the mack head that's still soaking.  Last thing I wanted was for another surf monster to take the bait, and I'll be in trouble!  Finally I got the nice batray to the beach.  That batray was fat and heavy!  Unhooked and released it!   The sun was setting, decided to pack up and call it quits.  Stoked to finally get the stripe off my back.

Fishing Talk / FG Knot
« on: September 11, 2015, 07:44:00 PM »
The FG knot I think is the best spectra to fluoro/mono knot.  It's very strong and will not slip when tied right. It is low profile and will go thru your guides easily.  Since I've started using it offshore and surf fishing, I've never had one failure.  I've busted 50lb topshot hooked up to surf monsters many times but the knot always held.  There are many ways to tie this knot and it's a bit confusing.  I made a video of how I tie this knot and I believe this is the easiest way and least confusing.  I recommend you do at least 20 twist and longer half hitches for strength.   This is the preferred knot used by GT fishermen. Practice and try it out next time you go surf fishing or offshore. Below is the link to the video.

Got to the beach around 5:00PM.  Tide was low and transitioning to high.  Cut a mack in half, stuck the head portion, and ripped it out.  From about 5:30 to 6:45 I had four nice hits. It was ripping out line but every time I was about to pick up the rod it dropped it.  Checked the mack head a couple of times it was pretty much undamaged except for the belly section which was flattened.  Definitely a bat ray has been playing with it.  Sun was setting.  Decided to change the bait, and hooked the tail half of the mack.  Double hooked it and wrapped the hook to the body with the magic thread to make sure if didn't fell apart on the cast.  Slung it out as far as I can and success!  The magic thread worked.  At about 7:15PM the sun had dipped under the horizon.  I was debating whether to stay a bit more or just accept the fact that I'm getting the stripe.  Started packing some of my gear, when I heard the dinner bell.  Line peeling out and my rod at bendo.  Hookup!  This time it stuck!  Turned out to be a nice leo which was barely hooked.  Got it to the beach, unhooked it and quick release.  Whew! Way to get the stripe off my back.

Salt Water Shore Fishing Reports / 22 Aug Solo Evening Session
« on: August 23, 2015, 10:18:17 AM »
Got to the beach at the peak of the high tide.  At the first soak, I got hit hard twice, and peeled some line out but didn't stick.  Destroyed the head of the mack.  Next I threw a tail section, and hooked up a small bat ray.  Seems like there's alot of juvy bats around.  Hooked on another head and sent it out there.  After about 20 minutes, I got knocked down.  Line was peeling out fast, thought it was a bigger model bat.  Turned out to be a nice leo.  When I got it to the beach, I saw that it got hooked on one of its fins.  Probably inhaled the head and then swam over the hook and snagged the bare hook.  Threw the last mack tail, it was getting mushy and I knew if a fish bit it and didn't reach the hook it's gone.  After 15 minutes, I heard the bell and saw my rod jerked then slack.  Yup, took the bait!  Called it quits, packed up and went home.

Salt Water Shore Fishing Reports / Sunday Morning Short Session
« on: July 19, 2015, 08:56:45 PM »
Thought I'd get some payback from last Sunday's smoke-a-rama.  It was slow today, probably due to the runoffs from the rain yesterday.  Tide was low transitioning to high.  Got my baits out by 7AM.  Finally got a knockdown by 9:30 AM by a medium sized bat. I love hooking up bats, they fight hard, and then they clap and give you an applause once you land them. ;D

Video of the hookup: https://youtu.be/1k-E1MgddcU

Say cheese!

Below is the link to last Sunday's hookup.  I was soaking some bait at a very high tide.  At around 6:30PM I got hit hard. I did got smoked.  Almost got spooled at almost lockdown drag.  Eventually my 50lb mono topshot busted.  I'm quite sure it was a big shark as I could feel the tug and surge of my drag every time it swung its tail to gain speed.  Checked my line and it was all scraped up most likely from rubbing against the skin of the monster.

Salt Water Shore Fishing Reports / Day before the 4th of July session
« on: July 04, 2015, 02:42:04 PM »
A buddy of mine Gil from LA drove down to get some surf fishing action and to practice casting poppers in prep for his trip to hunt GTs.  Since I've been landlocked for quite some time, I decided to take my 8' Japanese designed tuna stick rated for PE 3-6 to the surf. Haha!  I paired it with my VS VM275 which haven't hooked not even one surf creature since I've taken it on many surf sessions.  I was hoping it'll hookup this time and break its skunked spell.  We met Scott and his wife at the beach, they're weekend regulars there.  It turned put to be a slow day, though we still got some hookups.  We had baits out by 7AM and it didn't take long and Gil was hooked up to something with shoulders.  His Shimano Tranx and custom United Composite acid rod was working in perfect harmony.  Whatever it was that took his bait, was running hard, and dumping line, straight out towards deeper waters.   He cranked up the drag some more and then pop!  It's gone.  Busted his 50lb topshot. Sucks!  It turned out his drag setting was already a bit high, its just that whatever it was on the other end was a monster, and was still pulling line off the tranx.  A couple of hours went by with no takers, just little nibblers trying to pick some morsels from our baits.  Then Scott hooked up, it was a small bat ray.  Then I got hit, and it turned out to be a calico.  Hours flew by, and the tide started to come in.  I was looking at that VM275l, and keep muttering to myself, c'mon please hookup something.   And then it happened!  All of a sudden my rod got slammed to the ground, destroying that cheap $5 puny rod spike I saw and picked up at sports authority, Lol.  The VM275's drag, at the lowest drag setting with the drag knob very loose and almost falling off is still a bit tight.  Grabbed the rod and finally I was on!  This one's a nice male leo.  I thought at first it was a bat, since it wasn't fighting like a leo.  It turned out it got hooked in the belly. Weird!  I was using a filleted strip of mack for bait.   It probably took the bait and tore it off the hook and then swam over the hook and gut hooked itself.  Anyway, I was stoked that finally the VM275's skunkiness is gone!  To sum it up, it was an awesome time fishing with friends, shooting the breeze, even if it was a slow day!

Salt Water Shore Fishing Reports / 27 Jun Session
« on: June 28, 2015, 09:50:25 AM »
I go to the beach at around 7:30 AM and it was transitioning from low to high tide.  Got my bait out, and while waiting, I started rigging with my light gear and dropper looped a roboworm I picked up last Friday,  thought I'd give it a try.  After 30 minutes, I got my first biter.  It started peeling line.   Fought and got the nice sized bat to the beach, and released it.  Stoked!  Looks like it's going to be an awesome day.  Sent out another bait, and started fishing the roboworm while waiting.  After an hour I heard the bell and saw my rod spike and rod fell to the ground.  The biter pulled so hard that it knocked down the rod spike and rod at a very light drag setting.  I was on!   Picked the rod up, and I thought for sure I was hooked to a leo, by the way the fish was fighting.  I was thinking maybe just a smaller model leo.  I was surprised to see this pig of a sand bass when I got it to the beach.  It inhaled a whole tail section of a mack, and the hook was so far inside it's mouth that it was bleeding.  I knew it was going to die.  I kept it and gave it to my friend.  After that it was uber slow.   Just smaller fish picking at your bait and destroying it.  Kept changing baits many times.  I kept fishing the roboworm and hooked up a spottie.  It works!   Then the weather rolled in.  Wind and rain.  The surf was moving sideways because of the wind.  At around 2:30 PM I was at my last bait.  A tail section of a mack.  I casted it out and waited.  For a couple of hours nada.  I sarted packing up, when I got bit.  This one was unstoppable.  I got my drag wound up tight and it was still taking line.  It was  making a bee line towards the channel to the left and there was nothing I can do, and then pop!  It busted my fresh 50Lb Izorline mono topshot.  That's about it.

Well I got some payback this afternoon.  Found a couple of macks in the freezer and off I went for a couple of hours of surf fishing.  Got there around 3PM to an empty beach, just me and my lone surf rod.  By 3:15 I have my first bait soaking.  By 3:30 I heard the bell started ringing, and saw my line started peeling.  Hookup!  It was awesome to hookup to a nice leopard shark at the beach, knowing you can land it.  Got it to the beach, unhooked it, and released it to fight another day.  Hooked a tail section of the mack and when I casted it broke off, dangit!  One mack left.  Cut it in half and hooked the head section, and sent it out.  Decided to rig my salmon steelhead rod and dropper looped a plastic curly tail, to see if I could hook up to a hali while waiting for the bite on the long rod.  It didn't take long and I hear the bell again.  Ran towards my long rod, saw the line peeling out, by the time I got there, the line went slack.  I was guessing the the fish dropped it.  Hoping that it didn't rip the head from the hook, I waited for it to get back and commit to take it.  Nada!  Checked the bait, and it was gone. Sucks!  Now I have only one tail section of the mack left.  I took care to hook it properly, in-out-in again.  This time I gingerly casted it, sacrificing distance. Success!  It didn't break off!  While the bait was soaking, I continued fishing the dropper loop, this time I didn't wander far.  After about 20 minutes, I hear the a couple of tinkle of the bell, and my rod tip doing the tap tap tap.  I was like oh snap, probably small fish nipping at my bait since I didn't cast it too far.  I waited and watched... and all of a sudden my rod goes bendo and my reel started screaming!  Booyah!  Another hookup!  This one's taking long runs, definitely a bat!  Got it to the beach, unhooked it, and released it.  No more bait, looked at my cell phone it's 5PM.  Packed up and headed home with a smile on my face.  Happy Father's day!  I'll post the videos once it completes uploading on my youtube channel.

Salt Water Shore Fishing Reports / Bust-offs!
« on: June 21, 2015, 12:32:59 PM »
Yup, yesterday was a day of bust-offs!  Went solo on the small pier and there's no way I could haul haul a big model nor could I use the dehooker by myself.  My plan was to lead the fish towards the rocks where I could go down and pull it up and unhook it.  As planned, I hooked up and I could tell this fish was big as it was peeling line despite the heavy drag.  I was able to lead it towards the direction of the rocks just when I thought everything was working, it busted my line.  Sucks.  Just then, I got a call from my buddy to join them at the beach.  So I went, and launched my first bait. It was a huge mack head.  My buddy thought I was using a head of a bonito.  It was that big.  Not even 20 minutes on the soak, my rod went bendo, it's on!  I was stoked, and having an awesome time fighting the fish knowing it's going to be easier to land it from the beach.  Whatever it was we knew it has to be big to inhale that huge mack head.  And then, pop!  Another bust off!   That's about it, sometimes, the fish wins, and we get owned.  Videos of the bust-offs

Salt Water Shore Fishing Reports / Kitties on the chew!
« on: June 09, 2015, 05:52:38 PM »
The stars aligned for us last Saturday.  This truly was the best leo bite I've experienced. We ran out of bait and left them with the bite switch still on. I used my Okuma Azores Z80S and Daiwa Sealine combo with 100lb mono leader to tame these kitties.   All were released to fight again another day. I was so beat up, it felt like I went on an offshore trip.  Just an awesome Saturday!  Some pics.
