Saltwater Boat Fishing Reports / Bassin' in the rain 3/10/18

Been a minute since I took the boat out. Pops wanted to break in his new 13fishing setup Dre gave him for workin on his boat. Took him and my lil bro to the bay to see if the bass were on the chew and hopefully get a shot at a halibut or two. Launched at pepper park at 730 Saturday and headed to a couple waypoints I have caught halis at. 1st cast my bro and pops double up.



Then my bro and I did the same next cast!
His 1st sand bass!



We caught over a dozen on the 1st drift. This was about the average size spotty for the sesh


3rd drift I get slammed on the drop and connect with something bigger than the spots! Head shakes and a lil drag pull had me thinking it was the hali I was waiting for! But I was wrong, as I see a rare southbay legal turd roller come up from the flat!



The bass were seriously on the chew we averaged 10 fish a drift, and a couple times we got triple hook ups on multiple drifts! All the doubles and triples seemed to be mid sized fish and the legals seemed to be solo, or we jus couldn’t ever seal the deal when getting bit by multiple better fish lol



It was raining/ drizzling on and off pretty much the whole time, but round 10 we could see the rain coming from IB and decided we were only makin one more drift to beat the weather to the ramp. On what should have been the last cast I get absolutely smoked and hook up wit a hali only to have it come unbuttoned! So we make a few more last casts, and of course I’m feelin like sh!t for losing what was probably a legal, and reel up my line to head home when my pops gets  crushed! Got her pops? He’s quiet! My bro reels up and gets the net, pops? What’s up? Good one son! Aight jus let her fight u got 17lb mono, brand new mustad jig head! You’re good! He plays her out for a minute and I see her coming up! Legal pops! Keep her in the water! I take the net from my bro and scoop her up and she’s in the boat! I stick her on the board and she’s 24” she wouldn’t sit still so I stuck her wit the gaff for a pic 😊



She’s gonna be some tasty tacos this weekend !





Good times wit the fam on the water! can’t ask for much more, well good food to top it off is about as good as it gets!

Last year, Mike was the hot stick... it may be you this year unless someone else gets into a hot bite soon and sneaks up from behind!  Binh is all fired up that it might be him!

Excellent work Josh!  You are putting the time in and getting rewarded!

Nice tooth grab also.   

Tom the fire is an inferno, hoping to take advantage of the free time I have now, to dedicate every night that's worth sharkin to puttin grinners on the sand! Expect a lot more reports from me this spring and summer, so long as I can get someone to join I'll be gettin it in every chance I can!

Hit Mike up to see if he wanted to get a sesh in... Hell yeah! Was his response! We both were pumped and had a good feeling about getting a grinner to the sand! On the sand at 945, Mike shows up few mins after I get my 1st bait into some epic surf conditions. Whole mack came back chewed up on initial soak, noticed some grunion swimmin as I waded out to recast and decided to match the bait size, few soaks and couple of dakine offerings (45mins) later I get slammed! Half screamin initial run, kinda fooled me into thinking it was a soup! Got it turned and she started comin to me, head shakes, tail slaps, and surface thrash! She was piiiiissed! Went back and forth a few times  before I got her through the break and into the seemingly endless skinny water. Then Mike sees her as she starts belly draggin and rollin in the white wash, and gets her tailed after a couple trys!!!

Get her back in, light up an offering, cut my rig, retie a fresh rig, give Mike a fresh mack, smoke some more offerings, rebait!

Mikes getting critter bit, so he moves 20 yards south of me  to escape the bass and bugs. Soak a few half macks before Mike gets a knocker, kinda lazy bite and he connects! I’m stoked for him! Watching him fight his fish, when he looks over and sees I’m getting slammed! I run over to it and think he’s in my line but quickly realize he’s runnjin south and my lines peelin west! Holy Phuuuuuck! Double bro! This things kickin my ass! Serious 1st run! Powerful head shakes tail slap like crazy! Giant Mike!  Your on your own bro! It’s chaos I’m seriously in the zone! This things doin some serious rolls and starts phuckin thrashing The surface outside the breakers in the moonlight! I can’t tell exactly how big it is but it feels waaaaay bigger than the last one! I start to gain some ground and it starts slowly makin it’s way through the break and into the surf zone, I can for sure see this is a bigger fish, but can’t make out exactly what it is, jus squirmin pissed off beastly rolls and then the monster throws it head outta the wash and I get my 1st clear view of him! Biiiiiig 7 Mike! I look over and mikes takin a selfie of his shark! Then drags it in to release her! He was too far to get both in one shot, so I tailed mine solo and he came over and gave me a hand with dehooking and pics!

Mikes selfie shark 63” female? I’ll let him confirm that.

Well after a heartbreaker last surf sesh with Mike (pinoyfisher) I had to get back out. finally had time yesterday, mike was on daddy daycare duty, sent out a few more texts and got no response from a few guys. Hit my cousin up and he was free and down to roll so we set out and were on the sand by 630. Sent out the 1st baits and almost instantly got critter bit, this went in for a good 45mins b4 I switched out one bait and rcasted a head a few times. 3rd cast with a chewed up mack head, 5mins in my line goes slack after a small bump, grab it wind, wind, wind, wind, wtf? Oh sh!t there she is!  Finally catch up to her and she's on, super pissed and drag rippin! Herky jerky head shakes, then slack! Holy sh!t not again, wind, wind, wind, wind, tight! Oh sh!t thank Poseidon shes still there, blitz' me again and rips more drag off the baitrunner b4 she goes airborne in clear view! Oh sh!t cuz is that it? Yeah that’s her brah! Get ready! Wtf do I do? He’s never seen anything like this before! I wear her down some more, but every time she gets close she rips line back out thru the wash. Finally get her belly to hit hard pack and my cuz gets a tail grab but she’s not havin it, he drops her, she rolls free a few times b4 I hand off the rod and get her outta the agua for the pics!



Lil washed out waiting for some more pics from my cuz. But I was stoked to say the least! Got her back in the water and took a few minutes to smoke the rest of my blunt I almost lost durring the fight lol sent up some smoke for the fish gods! Sent out another bait and let my adrenaline subside and sent out some messages to share the stoke!

Soaked a few tails that got chewed up sent out a chunk and got a decent hit on my 2nd rod, that seemed lobsterish but checked it anyway, it ended up being a legal calico!



As I took that pic the Rasta-rod gets slammed! I drop the bass in the cooler and grab it! It’s still playin with it when I get to it.. as I debate on swingin on it, it takes off and I lay into it! Oh sh!t cuz is it on? Yuuup! another shark? Yeah feels like a leopard! No screaming runs, jus herky jerky rolls and tail slap, it storms the beach after a few minutes and as I get closer I don’t see saddles, I see a purplish spotted pretzel squirmin and thrashing in the white wash! Oh sh!t sevengill, here cuz I got this one lol wtf is that cuz? Here take the rod! I tail grab him and drag him ouy as he shows his flexibility and snaps back at me a few times before he’s on the hard pack! My cousins freakin out! never seen anything like any of this before, shocked is a serious understatement! He can’t believe the thing can bite it’s own tail and almost gets me a few times durring the melee! But I unhook him and get the pics b4 we send him back home!





This dude was seriously pissed, would snap back and tail slap every few secs so good pics were hard to get but we got em and holy sh!t was I beyond stoked! Soaked a few more baits as the tide dropped, got one more possible grinner bite but that was all she wrote! Couldn’t really ask for more, 2 grinners 2 species and a keeper Calico I gave to my cousin since he’s never tasted the deliciousness of calico tacos! And he did a pretty good job sand handin on his 1st shot! You can bet I’ll be back out tonight!

Has any boat tried to swamp you yet?  When i was fishing with Dave in his little Bass Puddle Jumper, boats would purposely go by and try to swamp us.  It used to piss me off, but you in the UFO just reminded me of that.

Yeah I've had a few dbags try and swamp it but it's literally impossible, most people are jus dumbfounded by the sight of it and ask stupid questions like, "WTH is that thing" clearly you can't read it says what it is all around it 😂🤣

Sitting bored as phuck at work figured I'd throw up a report

Didn't have sh!t to do and DGAF about the game so I tossed the skiff in the yota and hit up MB!



Water was glassy but the tide wasn't totally cooperating til bout 45 mins I got slammed on a long cast by a lil Butt!





Worked the area a bit lookin for it's Grande companion only to get my swimmer chomped off at the hook!
Moved around a bit for some dink spottys until I got into the speed zone and started pickin off some better size grumps!



I think upping the bait to the 4.5in mc swimmers helped weed out the dinks I got into a nice flurry of jus sub to definitely legal grumps for a solid 30-40mins they were on the chew!



Wind picked up a lil and the sun started to burn thru the haze . the bite slowed a bit and it was harder to keep the skiff in the right zone to drift. Made a few more drifts for jus a few bites and one dink that I snagged under the jaw as he swiped at the bait that was nearly his size lol.

Got a call from my buddy he was done bass fishin at otay and wanted to hit the gym. So I started makin my way to the ramp and as I was motorin back I trolled the swimmer behind me and get slammed by something wit enough shoulders to spin the skiff as I killed the trollin motor! Fooled me for a few cranks as I was being pulled back towards it, thought for sure it was a legal flattie! But it turned out to be jus a serious grump-apotamus!




She phucked my thumb up pretty good and pretty much ended my sesh but i was done anyway lol



Not a bad way to spend the day floatin around on a superbowl!

Been a minute since I posted. Been out rippin lips every weekend since the new year, lil fresh water, but I mostly been takin the ranger out to slay some salty bass! Hit MB on the 4th for a post B-Day slayage wit Dre the Bassterd and stuck some good ones amongst the 50+ spots we put on the boat!





Took my lil bro out to the big bay last weekend and got into a good bite on some nicer grade grumps out of 24th street.



We slayed em to say the least puttin over 80 on the boat in 3.5hrs including multiple doubles



Even got to work on my tan in January 😅😂😂😎



Well after seeing me and my bros trip to the big bay Dre wanted to get his wife in on the action since she hadn’t been out in forever I obliged and even brought Tobe for the ride!



We were pickin the grumps off when all of a sudden Dre get slammed and is bendo with the flat kine a d hauls up a door Matt! I had the net ready and scooped er up 1st shot I got!



We were all stoked and literally as soon as I put the camera down Dre’s wife got rocked and she’s on with a donkey of her own! Hers wasn’t playin as it ripped drag off her 13fishing creed reel and made a few strong runs before I could scoop up her flat-bass!




So now I’m the only one lookin for some booty 😅 but missed my shot as I got slammed a few casts later and reeled up a chomped off mc swimmer wit 2ins' missing from the tail! But I did get one more nice grump b4 the sunset




Got out again yesterday after my pops and bro got wind of the hali slayage they wanted a shot! Well we slayed the bass as usual!



We put over 75 on the boat between us and had a blast nailing em on every drift

And then on one of the last drifts before the tide bottomed out I get rocked and I know it’s not a bass instantly! Heavy head shakes and flat out pissed off herky jerky pulls on the smoke combo told me I had the flat one! Let her play herself out a bit before my bro scooped her up for me! Nice lil legal to cap off an awesome sesh wit the fam!

Salt Water Shore Fishing Reports / Rastafar-Rods first shark! 11/3/17

Hit the sand last night with my buddy Dre (bassterdphotography) to try and capitalize on the incoming high grinner bite Mike and Bihn found. Got on the sand round 830 and the water was already too high to hit the spot they fished the night before so I went to plan B and set up shop. Suuuuuper fresh macks were the main offering, with a somewhat fresh dine in the mix as well. Surf was pretty tame 1.5-2.5’ at times,  not much weeds to start but they definitely became a nuisance by the time we were done. Dre struck first with a 32” Bat that got our adrenaline Goin with a blistering run on the initial bite, but lack of tail slap and relative ease he turned it with, was a tell tale sign it wasn’t what we were after. Let her go quick and sent some fresh baits out on both rods. Lots of bass and lobster bites between us but it went quiet for about an hr or so. Probably 4 soaks after the bat he connects with a 3ft shovel that was just chewing on a mack chunk and looked a lot like a lobster bite that just kept pullin 6-10” off the clicker til he had enough and was tryin to check his bait and stuck it!

Bout 45mins later I swapped out a few baits and get a good cast out with a phat slimy mack head, cracked open a sculpin and sat back, we passed a blunt around a few times when my new Rastafar-rod finally got a real bite and the baitrunner started screamin and zingin! Get to it and lay into something with some shoulders, start cranking and feel the herky-jerky-tail slapin, Rollin, head shakes and it’s on! Then about 10 cranks in my line goes slack! Nooooooooooo!!! Phuckk!!! IT’S OFF!!! I felt sick! Just kept cranking fast as hell thinking WTF!!! How did I farm this thing, when half way in my rod loads back up and apparently this fish stormed the beach wit absolutely blistering speed and I finally caught back up to it! Oh sh!t I’m still on Dre!!! Did the back and forth and wore him down a bit, but still wasn’t sure if it was a big Leo or small soup,  few waves later it shows itself and I see the saddle-back tryin to fight through the shore break in the full moon light! After a few failed tail grabs I get him wrangled and Dre takes some seriously professional grade photos!!!




Soaked a few more macks between us b4 the weeds took over,. Called it a night lil b4 1245. Not a bad way to finish off a week, hopefully I can find a grinner to Really test out the new stick!
