Here’s a full handle shot. I’ll have to get a pic holding it. The blanks so thick it makes it looks really short.

Sweet Chris!  What will that be for?  General big surf critters or maybe even yellows?

I might break it in at the bat fight or on a surf critter but I got it to toss metal at yellows. Either from the bow of a boat or maybe a jetty. I need to try it out and see if I really want a 10ft rod on a boat or stick to my 93H and 90j

Picked up an ULUA ESM blank at the seeker sale and dropped it off at my buddy Ronnie’s to get wrapped since my wrapper will only accommodate up to 8ft right now

Split grip, tiger wrap and plate seat were my only requests. I picked up the guides from island tackle and had the seats shipped in from the east coast (popular on beach rods). We got the measurements and then he did his thing. Turned out pretty awesome IMO! He made it match a SPJ rod he built me last month.

Tackle Talk / New kayak kill bag!
« on: March 29, 2023, 09:19:24 AM »
Oh no, not another kayak bag! ::)

I had a pretty big part in getting this bag to market and had a lot of input from kayakers in the California and gulf region. This company is literally right up the street from me and I said “hey, can you make this better and do this?” And they said yes
Prototype is out and pre orders are being taken now.

https://deckhandsports.com/products/36-kayak-multi-species-insulated-fish-kill-bag

36” model right now but there will be other sizes and styles depending on what the feedback is given. Yes it looks similar to reliable, mako and buffalo but there’s only so much you can do with the overall shape and stitching.
Main key features are:
1” insulation (most are 1/2” besides Opah which is 2” and bulky/heavy)
1” drain (not found on others this size)
Top access flap (easy access to slide fish in)
Rear and side mesh
Top mesh (secure wind breaker, landing let, life jacket etc)
Shoulder strap to carry to the car and not rip the handles
Welded seams so it won’t leak!
And it’s only $180.

Tohatsu new 25/30hp are 126lbs. You can slap two 30’s on there. I think a single 30 would do just fine for a solo craft though.

As for speed, you’re lucky to do 15 in anything under 20ft. Sure on a glass day let it rip but with any swell you’re looking at 12-15mph being a comfortable ride.

The further back you sit the more comfortable the ride is. The bow constantly slaps the water and you’ll feel it after awhile. Maybe not the 1st trip but by the end of the season you will for sure.

If I did it I would make the deck level with the center and seal the hulls and only leave room for the fuel tanks (9 gallons on each side), put a 75-105 qt. Cooler to sit on and a grab rail with electronics mounted on it 2/3 forward and center of the hull.

Tiller motor with extended tiller and carry a kill bag for fish. You can put a low, 15 -20 gallon bait tank center and behind you and have plenty of bait.

Great video and I love seeing Donovan reeling in some fish!  Your back probably feels better being in a bigger boat, huh?

Damn, I almost went out this weekend, but opted to get house chores done to free up more fishing time this spring.

It’s so much better being able to stand and stretch my legs.

Donovan’s becoming quite the little fishermen. He’s going to be off on his own any day now and not needing me 🥲

Looks great!
I’m really glad he put the rollers on facing the correct way

How much mono are you putting on top? Any reason you went with a 50w. Vs the topless 80 narrow?

Hopped on a buddies boat in search of yellows and T’s. We went out to find “clean green water” which was in 1500ft of water. Found lots of bait. Filled the meter from 150- 1,000ft down. Giant biomass.

We trolled deep driver, jigged deep, jigged shallow, drifted live Mack’s and decided there wasn’t any fish, at least none willing to bite.

Went in and cruised the beach and trolled a bit around birds and known structure for nothing. Decided to go look for bass and put some numbers on the board. Found calicos and sand bass at one of the pipes.

Nothing huge but did get a few legals, all released.
Showed Donovan how to work the jig and he killed it!

burning under 6 gallons of gas and never dealing with traffic.

That right there is good enough for me, as long as the sea conditions allow you to get down there safely.

I saw the pictures on FB or IG.  Crazy there is so much bait and so little in the way of gamefish with them.  My last few trips were full of bait and no gamefish also.

I’ve definitely turned around before. Wasn’t too long ago I had the same trip in mind and it was smooth seas out of the harbor then I got to leucadia and it was a close 2ft swell with chop and then the fog rolled in so I had to cruise back at around 10mph getting beat up with 100ft of vis. Really thankful for the charts on my Garmin.

Hopefully the water clears up after this next rain and we see some more activity. I need to get out after sunset and put some time in on the seabass.

I’d guess 55-60 miles with the zig zags. I burned about 3.5 gallons of gas so it adds up. Cruising straight down to La Jolla usually takes an hour and half. I got there around 2:50 and left at 4:15. Landed in oside at 6:30.

Lots of bait fish just very little signs of game fish

It’s actually more efficient for me to launch from oside when fishing Del Mar to La Jolla. It takes me 10 minutes to get to the ramp and i can get to Del Mar in about an hour. Start fishing and work to La Jolla and back then be back up in oside in another hour burning under 6 gallons of gas and never dealing with traffic.

If I launch down there it takes 4-5 gallons of diesel in the truck for the day, 45-60 minutes to get to the launch. More time to unload and find parking then 9 out of 10 times driving north I’ve been stuck in traffic for close to 2 hours.

My little 9.8 tohatsu started acting up.  Had to do some maintenance and tear apart the Carb but wasn’t able to do a sea trial for several weeks due to scheduling and weather.

Finally made it out today.
Launched out of oside around 10:45am. Found birds working anchovies in 50ft of water. Trolled deep divers and dropped the iron on some possible marks for nothing.
Headed south.
Just before Carlsbad i Found more anchovies being worked by dolphin and birds. Mack’s underneath. Saw a floating squid. Trolled around and dropped on a few smaller marks for nothing.

Went south
Got to Anderson pipe. Lots of life. Good bass marks, anchovies up top, hooked a couple Mack’s on the iron.
Pushed south.
Got to Cardiff. Two big threshers working bait in front of chart-house. Big long tails and solid slapping sounds. Can’t fish the MLPA and they didn’t pose for photo.

Due south.
Torrey pines: lots of small Mack’s in All depths. Few birds. Dolphins and seals past 150ft.
Blacks: dolphins and bait in 20-40ft. Seals and birds working bait past 100ft

La Jolla: dirty water. Spotty bait. Birds taking double takes at bait in 130+ . Nothing really going on.

Went back north and found good marks off Torrey in 115ft under some Mack’s. No bites on the iron.

Pushed further north and right around sunset found lots of baits being pushed up into birds at Anderson pipe. Marks looked like bass. More sea lions and seals around this time.

Back in the harbor before pitch black.

My motor acted up and I used up all my surf bait soon after.
Doing a shake down run tomorrow. Hopefully get some Mack’s and squid and maybe something fresh for the table.

Don’t even try to make sense of it.

Once you learn nomenclatures you’ll learn about colored glass and either get hooked or hate everything about it.

I hate everything about the jig stick scene, from the “special colors” to the flat billed hats and everyone sets the handles up wrong for casting. Try to talk sense into the jig stick crowd about how to mount a seat with tape or plate seats and stock clamps with multiple points of contact and they just go cave man on you and push overpriced clamps that promote corrosion on your reel.

With that said. Some of the rods/blanks fit the bill perfectly for throwing antique, non aerodynamic hunks of pot metal relatively far. And they’re fun.

I’m having a slow pitch blank wrapped that’s been sitting in my garage for the past 7 years and pairing it with a siegler small game lever drag filled with 30lb braid. I can’t wait to see what I can jig up from 1,000+ ft

I wish I had been using 30 lb in CA. Had 65 lb on my deep drop reel, switched to 30 lb when I moved to FL. It's so much better having less bow in your line.

I was using 65 for swords with 4-6 lbs of weight and still had scope.
I might even go with 20.
