Nice one Bro years back we landed one fishing Ensenada that we decided to keep and eat it measured 40" and went 40lb even so I had guessed 45-50lbs on yours just by the pic and sounds about spot on for your measurements. Identifiably Belly contents were 1 Baby Bat Ray  ;)

Fishing Talk / Black Sea Bass Season
« on: December 09, 2014, 11:16:48 PM »
Black Sea Bass once the Leviathan for the Southern West Coast anglers to pursue tackle and bring home for families to feast on has been Protected from sports fishing here in Calif for over 30 years now can no longer be over looked as a sustainable healthy population any longer. They are very prolific along our coast islands and offshore banks once again along with many other species that were long over looked for proper fishery management by our DFG of the past who flat shut them down. As a New sustainable fisheries era begins and species are being highlighted  for consumption I believe that a seasonal tag in a slot size should be implemented for the 2016 fishing year after carefully compiling the FACTS for breeding season and size to maintain a healthy population both for the species and for the balance of the surrounding population that may start to decline as the Black Sea Bass population continues to grow. Thoughts comments and other views are welcome.

Way to go Tom, I've had the same monkey on my back for a while coupled with a load of other sh!tty life changing events. Hopefully I can get on some soup soon, my spot dried up.

Spots don't really dry up Jimmy its the tide and tom was on one of the best ones.

That is Top notch quality there for a soupie Tom. I've dumped quite a few in the 6' range from what was landed and 1 that I saw not surf fishing but backed into the cove of Valhalla that was in that class... the image of it in my mind still haunts me... we need to hook up again its been too long.

Mini bones make the best bait! Over 2 lbs they start getting too thick to chunk

I have stayed at the finesterra as well.  but the shore break was about 10' and would shake the ground..lol..We fished with a buddy Black fin Don he has his boat in the first slip next to the launch ramp..

You get the timeshare promo deal? $500 /6days 5 nights all inclusive per couple?
Surf was 4-6' when we fished it but the Pargo are crazy and would attack the topwater plugs mid break shooting through the crest!

Tom
I found some pangas online that run $35/hr min 5 hrs that run out of the San Lucas Harbor(up to 3 anglers) and kayaking can be an option but surf is usually up this time of year with all the hurricanes forming up to the south.

Looked for that plug for a min but its not in my normal boxes so I'll have to dig around a bit. We did well during the spring trolling cd 11 and 14 Rapalas wired for sierra toro yellows and of course Needlefish...

Have fun and watchout for 2/1 happyhour specials... order 1 get 2.... :o :o

I booked a trip late feb we are going to be at Sandos Finnesterra! Harbor on one side Pacific on the other walking distance from Lovers beach! I fished the beach above the resort 20 some odd years back with Jeff Claussen who at the time was the 'Guy' in cabo to fish the beach with. He was using some bluefish/striper plugs called Rangers a lot and was making his own plugs from wood dowel in pvc material and wiring the hooks in then painting them up for Pargo roosters toro and sierra from the beach.
Leave the rubber at home the triggers kill them... bring some frozen squid if you can to fish strips on leadheads if you want to bang out a bunch of species and singlestrand wire on everything at least a foot of 40-50ish lb and black swivels or rings.

In that area you should get Giant Needlefish Trumpetfish a few croakers asst cabrilla puffers different wrasses grunts and jacks along with scorpionfish and LIZARDFISH!

You should be able to bang out 20 new species easy if you try from the beach and harbor.

I've never really tried doing the shark thing at night from the beach down there but plan on giving it a go this time around.

Hope this helps you out some and I'll dig that DIY Claussen jig out for pics so you can make some if you want. 8)

Actually our bay team is for the guys whom are more comfortable in that arena. I fell back to that area for SNBF VI just because the conditions were totally blown out in the surf for our morning session.

As you have progressed in your fishing Tom you do have to admit the surf does give you a better chance of Hooking and Landing more large species when the conditions are right and the largest Batrays have come from the surf over the last few years but I will concede that the little bay does give you more chances at 100lb.+ Rays. :P

Was hoping for bonus Triple 7's for last one ... our surf area got blown up 2 years in a row now week of or before the event... Takes a lot more work to Catch Bats in the surf than those bay rays :D
