Lobster Hoop Nets
Now, you NEVER know what might show up in your hoop net while lobster fishing. It could be Seven-gill sharks, Bat
Rays or just an array of weird crabs. This sucker was a purse crab I hooped up and actually didn’t fall through the netting. They are like big golf balls and a really neat crab. Some other crabs that I netted up were spider crabs and the cool kelp crab. These guys have super strong legs and can grip into almost anything. Make sure you have the deck clear when you pull them out of the net. There are a countless number of critters that could make its way into this blog but it might take up 5 pages of pictures to show them all. All I can say is that the spider crab is one of the most ugly critters in the sea and they taste as good as they look.
Granted, I tried them and would eat one in a pinch, but I was not very pleased with the way they tasted. These things remind me of the old Jim Henson movie, The Dark Crystal.
There are so many cool things to see out there… I have found giant purple jellyfish washed up in the back bay which was really trippy. This sucker was big as a manhole cover!
The bay is also full of nudibranchs at times. These colorful guys are just thick back there at times. They also have a pink cousin known as the Sea Hare that bleeds purple and blows up like a balloon if snagged.
I might have to revisit this at a later time as I guess almost everything in the sea might make it up here , but I’ll just leave you with a parting shot…
Until next tide…
