Unplanned solo surf sesh. Macks for bait. Stripped the line from my usual surf reels and didn't want to waste any time spooling one up so I gambled and grabbed a 30lb reel. Loaded with 50lb spectra and topped off with 75yds of 40lb. Puts out almost 30lbs of drag, so I figured I was good to go.
Peak low with a soon to be rising tide. Foliage free beach... yes!! Eerily hazy like that movie The Fog. 1st bait gets tossed out... nada for 10mins. 2nd bait goes out and soaks for a few mins then takes off for the tuna grounds! End result was a solid surf bat over 50". No measurement, but caught enough to know, that and my back told me
3rd bait hits the water. Less than 3mins into it's soak, my reel screams!! Luckily I was wise enough to put on my rod belt before casting out that bait cause my rod butt killed my hip area while fighting that bat.
Now this is where I need you shark list guys to weigh in since I've never caught the "right kind"' so whatever I had on zips left then right then comes at me then back out. I'm barely keeping up with it! No real head shakes, but some solid thuds. Saw a big splash with my headlamp through the haze then my line went limp. Whatever it was left me about 30yds away from my stuff wondering what it was.
4th bait was a leo that came unbuttoned in ankle deep water. Looked to be 40" or so. Still fishing.
