Looking for bait
« on: February 13, 2022, 09:16:33 AM »
Did just over 20 miles round trip and caught one mackerel and a Mylar balloon.
Not for lack of bait in the area though. Lots of signs of life but it seems all the Mack’s are tiny and the only one I caught was snagged on my sabiki and about 6” long. The wind picked up a little and I was practicing getting my boat into drift positions in front of bait schools when we saw dolphins. From there it was over. We traveled with them from oside to Carlsbad and then hit the canyon and trolled some lures for nothing. Saw what looked like a small flying fish that skipped the water for a good 30 ft but I couldn’t tell as it was right into the sun and 5-6 inches long.
Water is really clean and looks promising for the next coming weeks.
Put together a little video:

Me too especially with how much bait is in the area. It might be I’m seeing grunion school and Mack’s under them which is why it’s hard to get bites

I made some there the other night. Brought the long spinners and was casting green glow sticks with a #4 hook and small piece of Mack as far as I could (well out of the light area) and was able to get 7 in just under 2 hours. Only one other was caught. It was a waiting game but you could see them hitting the surface.

Usually macks in the winter is when I stock up for fresh surf bait... this is a totally weird year.

Boat looks and sounds like it was running good!  Great vid with you and your boy.  He was digging the dolphin!
You can't catch them from your computer chair.

Buddy didn’t get a bite in 4 hours. Neither did the regular crowd.
