I’ve heard spear guys get harassed by them and want the fishery on them reopened. Idk if I’d keep one though, at least in US waters. Sounds like they’re a sustainable stock south of the border and you could take em there with no remorse.

I was gifted a piece ( hooray for declaration forms ) and it's no wonder why they were a prized fish. But we would decimate that population by noon on opening day.

Back in the early 80's me and a buddy were fishing in my 14 foot boat with a 20 HP Merc tiller steering motor.

We were at Cotton's Point rock reef fishing Mackerel for huge Calicos, 5 lbs to 10 lbs fish on 30 pound tackle.

All of the sudden the boat quickly spins 180 degrees and is heading out to deeper water, we were inside the breakers.

Somehow we miss getting swamped and wind up getting towed around for about 2 hours.

Finally the fish comes up to the surface and we see a monster Black Sea Bass.

We eyeballed the measurements and figured out the fish was between 250 and 350 lbs.

Reached over and unhooked the beast.

The fish swam away slowly.

Simply amazing we held on for two hours.
