Two fish and a lesson. 3/10/15
« on: March 11, 2015, 05:26:36 AM »
Spent all day at jury duty. I took the train down and left my gear at home since I didn't really plan on fishing afterwards.

The surf looked so good from the train I changed my mind and went home to grab the goods.

I got in touch with Ray and decided to meet him at a spot he had fished last night. He got stuck at work so I made a quick exploratory stop at a new to me spot. The dolphins were in so close I was casting well beyond them, but I'm pretty sure one took my bait as they moved further out.

Decided to make the move before it got dark and set up on a familiar beach. No bites, then Ray showed up and got his gear ready to fish.

After the usual discussions of gear and techniques I get bit.

A few minutes later and I get a bump. Let it sit for a couple minutes and decide to check my bait. A couple cranks and line starts coming off the reel.

Then I get my lesson. Another bite, while Ray's offerings go untouched, a short fight and as the fish nears shore, a break off. Ray is right on it, checking for a pigtail sign of a bad knot. Nope, frayed line. Should have checked better after that seven gill. Have I learned my lesson? Not so far I guess.

Good to meet you in person, Ray. Thanks for landing my fish. Hope to return the favor next time.

Chris

Bravo guys.  I'm going crazy over here trying to heal up so I could fish again, but at least these reports will keep me going for a little while.

Glad you and Ray got to fish last night.  Were you using the same baits?

Well, I'll add the info to the spread sheet and update it by the weekend.  Nicely done guys!
You can't catch them from your computer chair.

Was awesome fishing with you Steve. I guess it just wasn't my night, next time.... As far as bait went, I bought mine, frozen, from Pacific bait and tackle...maybe there fresh, maybe there old, just to play it safe I dumped it all while packing up...next time will be my night

We were using basically the same baits. Mackerel from the bait store. I however paid a premium price from Dana Landing. If that is what made the difference, it was well worth it. I think I was just putting baits in the right spot.

Nice 7 gill! I was wondering if you would hit the water after jury duty.

I worked late up in OC and thought about calling you. I have 5 pounds of squid in the freezer at the hotel that I wanted to pass along before heading up to Oregon for a week. I'm sure if I add a little Worcestershire sauce to my iced beverages it will kill the squid taste. :P

I hope to get a chance or two in the surf for sharks when I return.

Cheers,
Sticks
