Boat obtained
« on: September 23, 2016, 10:07:04 PM »
Got a line on what can be a sweet cat boat. Problem is my Outback has a towing limit of 1000 lbs unless the trailer has brakes. 2500 if it does.

Total boat weight is unknown <2500 but may be more than 1K so wonder if anyone with a larger towing vehicle wants to give me a hand and look into this.

Boat is in Palm Springs.

I'd help you out, but I have an Accord. Maybe rent a truck from U-Haul??

Jim, sorry but i'm out fishing tomorrow.

Listen, that aluminum boat and trailer weigh nothing. i've towed boats much heavier than my capacity, but besides that, that aluminum doubtfully weighs more than 1200 total plus or minus a hundred pounds.

Here are the specs for a new one and you should be toally fine depending on your hitch weight.

I really think you would be able to tow it just fine, but do the trailer speed limit and shift to 3rd gear up and down hills.
I hope it all works out for you.  Quick question, were you planning on using the new Suburu to tow the boat in general or just don't want to tow it from that long distance and will use the Suburu to tow in SD?

Good luck boss!  It looks like a nice boat!

No it was too hot to risk towing and I had too much work in the morning.

I'm going to see if it is still available. Keeping an eye out for one and that was a great fit

Bummer. Hopefully it's still available or you find one locally. Good luck!

I'll need trailer brakes and according to Last Chance Marine not all trailers can be easily retrofitted. Gotta check that aspect or downsize to a jon boat.

Found a sweet Lowe for 3K but brakes unknown.

I don't think they make braked trailers that small, Jim.  Like I said, I still think you're fine and wouldn't think twice, but it's your vehicle so you might need to look at a John boat rig if you are going to make any long runs on the trailer.  I'll send any links if I come across something.

They are usually optional on 17 foot or less apparently. A Lowe dealer said the current matching one to the used one braked trailer is an option but not stock.  Trying to have the seller send a pic of the axle to see it it can be fitted.

The Outback limit without trailer brakes is 1K but 2.5K with brakes. Estimated weight of rig is 1800-2k so far beyond the brakeless limit. Also need a low tongue weighted rig. 200 lbs or less.

Be nice to have something lake and ocean capable but may have to just downsize for lakes and river.

It's not that you want the wrong boat ... you bought the wrong car.  ;D ;D ;D

Good luck man - hope it works out.

So the SD catfish is in Hemet getting a bill of health. Water trials in Dec probably.

Will need some carpeting work though.
