Salt Water Shore Fishing Reports / Saturday in The OC 1-27
« on: January 29, 2018, 09:20:09 AM »
Hit the sand Saturday night around 5. Met up with TFT, Matt, SoCal Bill and some new friends. TFT and Matt had been there since 5:00am with nothing to show for it but a Para Glider. Yeah, they caught a Para Glider. The last couple of times there have been 3 or 4 guys buzzing the sand and water really low in para gliders and we've yelled and waved at them to go up. This time there was only one, but he managed to snag all the lines, pull out 500 yards of braid, get all tangled up and had to make an emergency landing on the sand. Darwin almost had to hand out another award ;D

Anyway, we straightened out all the lines, rigged up and got back in the water with a variety of baits both longlined out by yak and shore cast. Didn't matter as we got absolutely nothing but clean mac heads back. Critters were doing a great job of cleaning out all the meat and leaving hollowed out heads. We fished until 10:30 before finally deciding it just wasn't going to happen and calling it.

Oh well, we got intel on a couple of new spots we can fish for Bat Fight that look promising. They're smaller, and can be covered by 3-4 guys with 1 rod each, so we'll start checking them out in the coming weeks ;D

General Board / Guy Goes Into A Bar...
« on: January 23, 2018, 07:59:11 PM »
A guy goes into a bar in Orange County where all the bartenders are robots:

The guy sits down at the bar and the robot asks: “What will you have?

The guy replies, “Whiskey. ” The robot brings back his drink and asks, “What’s your IQ? ”

The guy says, “168”.

The robot talks about physics, space exploration, and medical technology.

After the guy leaves, he pauses at the street corner and thinks about what he just encountered, and the more he thinks about it the more curious he gets, so he decides to go back.

The robot asks, “What’s your drink? ”

The guy answers, “Whiskey. ”

The robot returns with his drink and asks, “What’s your IQ? ”

This time the man replies, “100. ”

The robot talks about Budweiser, Football and All-star Wrestling.

The man finishes his drink, leaves, but is so interested in this
“experiment” that he decides he'll try again.

He enters the bar and, as usual, the robot asks him what he wants to drink.

The man replies, “Whiskey. ”

The robot brings the drink and asks, “What’s your IQ? ”

This time the man answers, “50. ”

The robot leans in real close and slowly says,

"Oh, you're from San Diego. Are you still upset about losing Bat Fight?"

Salt Water Shore Fishing Reports / Saturday in The OC 1-20
« on: January 21, 2018, 11:23:55 AM »
With the surf chasing us off the big pond, TFT, SoCal and I hit the batting cages at 2:00pm for some recon. Typical for this time of year, nothing until sundown, then a couple of bites around the tide turn for some critters of the wrong kind. The water looked really good, clear and salad free, but it got cold once the sun went down. Still trying to figure out how fish that small can suicide themselves on a 10/0 hook. The bite died down, and we gave it another hour before calling it at 7:30pm.

Sorry guys, no pics. They were small, it was cold, I still had beer and didn't feel like getting up out of my chair.

Fishing Talk / OC Batting Practice
« on: January 19, 2018, 11:57:53 AM »
With Bat Fight only a couple of months away and with the surf chasing us off the beach, we're going to get in some batting practice and recon the Double Top Secret OC Eyes Only Spot on Saturday from 2pm to 7:30ish. If you've never fished for monster rays before and want to see what it's all about, this is the perfect opportunity to learn. Between now and Bat Fight, we'll be doing recon on a number of beaches in The OC and you'll have a chance to meet a lot of other OC fishermen, find out about the spots, the gear, and the techniques involved.

If you don't have any heavy gear, don't let that stop you, I've got extra rods/reels you can use ;D

We don't call them mud marlin for nothing! A 200lb bat ray is a beast and catching them is a blast! So if you want to give it a shot, PM me or hit me on my cell at 949.910.0421 and we'll get you hooked up!

Salt Water Shore Fishing Reports / Sunday in The OC 1-14
« on: January 15, 2018, 07:59:30 AM »
Hit the deck at greylight. Even in the dark it was obvious our beach had undergone some major changes. Lots of sand moved around.

SoCal Bill, JayRay and I were joined by a ghost from the past, Batastrophe, AKA Jeff.

We got the longrods in, and while SoCal Bill and I settled in waiting for grinners JayRay and Batastrophe played with their critter rods. It wasn't long before they started catching croakers, small beans, and keychain leos.

Tide flipped, and we fished hard for grinners. Water was clear, surf wasn't bad, no salad, but as the tide went out it was obvious there was a lot of new sand. We heard reports of a large ray being caught the day before along with a fat leo ;D

But we got nada >:(

Still, it was pretty amazing to be getting sunburned in the middle of January while the rest of the country is freezing their hohos off. Taking a look at reports from others fishing The OC showed signs of life with a big bat confirmed. It's just typical wintertime fishing, hit or miss with a few pleasant surprises showing here and there.

Fishing Talk / Twilight Specials
« on: January 11, 2018, 12:32:49 PM »
Not sure if we're going to be able to hit the surf due to water quality/salad bar conditions after the storm this weekend. Should pick up some intel later today.

But, I got a $19.50 twilight boat coupon in the email today.

Thinking it might be fun to try for some fish taco's and bait. Maybe take a little baby sculpin and throw it on the 9/0 just to find out what's down there?

Hit the sand with TFT and Matt so early there was coffee in my chair's cup holder :o

We were joined by SoCal Bill and DarkKnight shortly thereafter, and other than some shore break and a piece of salad here and there, conditions were perfect and we fished in shorts and flip flops. We managed to catch and release a couple of baby grinners before I decided to head home for some lunch, football and a nap at 2:30.

A warden did stop by, but he was totally chill 8)
