Salt Water Shore Fishing Reports / Carlsbad 3-21-2015
« on: March 22, 2015, 09:26:59 AM »
Hit the sand at sundown but it was unfishable, too much eel grass >:( Tried moving but same results >:( >:(

We'd never fished Oside, so we decided to check it out as plan B.

Beach was too flat and they had plenty of grass there too >:( >:( >:(

So we switched and fished from the rocks in the harbor. It was cool being able to fish from the back of the truck, but we got absolutely no love other than critters mauling our macs. Oh well, it was a gorgeous night so we made the best of it and drank a bunch of beer trying to wash the stripes away ;D

Next week's chart looks really good for our normal AO, so if anybody wants to hookup in the OC on Saturday night, PM me and we'll make it happen 8)

Salt Water Shore Fishing Reports / Pi Day at Carlsbad
« on: March 15, 2015, 09:23:54 AM »
Decided it was time for some strange, so we headed down to Carlsbad on Pi Day. Got to the sand late, around 8:30, because we had issues with our Mac connection. Oh well, threw double squid and hoped for the best. Nothing really until about 10:30 when Tsunami puts a 35" ray on the sand, followed by Kyle losing his cherry to a cute little baby thornback. Couple of bites after that, but nothing with a serious conviction. Really wish we had those macs, rumored that a guy down the way from us landed a 7 gill. Out of beer and bait we called it just before Midnight and headed to Mickey D's.

 Nothing pic worthy :(

Fishing Talk / Thinking of Long Rodding for Something Toothy
« on: March 13, 2015, 07:23:08 PM »
Thinking of heading down to Carlsbad in search of something toothy, maybe a 7 or a nice Leo Saturday night. If any of you guys want to hook up or help a tourist out that would be cool.

Tackle Talk / Crimps, Crimpers and Crimping
« on: February 24, 2015, 06:27:16 AM »
Ok all of you crimping gurus, what's the hot ticket?

I started with a set of point to cup crimpers, round brass sleeves, and 90lb 7 strand wire. They worked, but what a pain in the butt!

Now I want to start doing my own Ghost Leaders with 80lb+ fluorocarbon in addition to heavier wire leaders for bigger toothy critters ;D

So what's your favorite combo of crimps, crimpers and techniques? I know you can over crimp fluorocarbon/mono, but does anybody have a bomb proof set up? What about suppliers and quality? Seems like there's a big difference in price between my local tackle shop and what's available online :(

Salt Water Shore Fishing Reports / Hello Kitty 2-20-15
« on: February 21, 2015, 08:55:00 AM »
Wanted to recon the other "Secret Spot" for Bat Fight Friday night. Hooked up with Glen on the sand around 6:00PM. Rising tide, no surf to speak of, light wind and no salad. Fished for about an hour with no love on the long rods. Then Cutty and Matt came down and we moved to another spot. Started to get some action from bait thieves. Glen, I and Cutty were long rodding, but Matt's back was bothering him so he was working the skinny with the trout gear. Matt showed the crows and smelt who was boss :)

Then at 8:15 my rod goes bendo. Wasn't the target species, but it sure was fun. Wanted to get such a pretty fish back into the water as quick as possible, so didn't bother to tape it. I'm 5'9", and there was a bit of a camera angle, but I'm pretty comfortable calling it at least 48";D

Then Cutty's rod goes off and he brings in a nice thornback, and then Glen follows with a small variety of our target species. Glenn followed that up with a skate, and that was it, the bite shut off :'(

No monsters of the target species, but no stripes and a pretty nice consolation prize. All in all pretty darn good for a Bat Fight recon trip with some bros in February 8)

Pic or it didn't happen ;D

Salt Water Shore Fishing Reports / OC Batting Practice Results
« on: February 08, 2015, 08:52:47 AM »
Not the greatest chart last night, but it was awesome meeting some new friends and new SCSF members, Ben and Rich. Seems like there was something out there on the chew all night, with the usual assortment of Secret Spot critters showing for the guys playing with small gear.

The big boys and girls are still taking their sweet time showing up, but we did get one 41" ray with a serious attitude on the sand.

Salt Water Shore Fishing Reports / OC Batting Practice Saturday 2/7/2015
« on: February 07, 2015, 11:46:44 AM »
Unfortunately the Surf Gods are angry, so we will be fishing back at the "Secret Spot" again today. No official time, some guys are probably going to start showing up around 2:00PM ish to fish the falling tide/sundown/rising tide. I'll be getting there with a couple of the crew around 6:00PM ish and fishing until 10:30PM/11:30PM. IMHO Happy Hour for Monsters is going to be 9:00PM - 10:00PM give or take an hour ;D

As always PM or ping me if you have any questions 8)

Saturday Night Batting Practice for The OC is... TBD. We are going this Saturday night, 2/7/2015, but exactly where is going to be up to the surf gods. We'll have scouts out early Saturday AM, but there's a good chance that the surf may be too high. If that's the case we'll fish back at the Secret Spot. So stay loose and keep your ears open, we will be posting here, on SCSF, and PS Saturday afternoon when Cutty makes the call. And as always, feel free to Call or PM me if you have any questions.

Fishing Talk / Bat Ray Weight Chart
« on: January 31, 2015, 08:34:37 AM »
Does anybody have an "Official" wingspan to weight chart for bat rays?

We know they grow to 60". Most of the scientific sites list max weight for females at close to 200lbs. I checked the math for this chart and it's solid, but the data came from fishing tournaments and is limited, especially at the top end of the chart. My guess is it's probably skewed a little heavy at the top end due to limited numbers of very large fish being caught. You could also argue that large prego females could be carrying another 25lbs with their pups.

Anyways, this is the best that I can find. What do you think, pretty accurate or BS?
