Fishing Talk / Cabo Surf Fishing Techniques Needed
« on: July 28, 2014, 06:44:53 AM »
Well, I'm heading down with the family in a few weeks and have my pack rods ready.  The rods are rated MH from 10-20lb and the spinner has 20# braid while the Calcutta 201 has 50# brais.  I also have an array of 3/4 to 1.5 oz spoons, Kastmasters, jerk baits and swim baits.

Any last minute tips before I leave would be appreciated.  I'm sure I'll get things figured out down there while I'm fishing, but any pointers prior to the trip is always welcome.

This means you Phong and Nicky!    ::)

BTW, I'm thinking Josh joined this forum, but is being a lurker here also (Right Josh?)  Zero posts?  Content Boss.... Content!

Well done sasquatch... even if you only have stock photos to show for it.  That was a hell of a lot better than we did in the boat today.

Salt Water Shore Fishing Reports / Minus One's to Mini Seven's (7/22)

I knew the beaches were going to be crowded, but a wind event was supposed to happen so I didn't take the boat to work with me.  Figures, the weathermen were wrong once again....

Steve and I had to do some walking to find anywhere to fish when we first got down to the beach.  It quickly became a shovelnose fest, but at least they were some half way decent ones that put up a decent fight.

The other cool thing was we saw a bunch of bat rays and leopard sharks feeding in the surf.  It was frustrating watching them swim around out baits and not take them.

We moved down to where we originally  were going to fish to find a swarm of surfing and spear fishing groms.  It took a while for things to clear out, but when it did, the fishing got good.

The shovelnose were not here thankfully, but we had some decent action for only a real few hours of fishing.

I farmed a nice fish which most likely was a bat ray from all of the line he was stripping.  I finally get on the board with a 3+ foot leopard.

Steve one upped me with a bigger model leopard with a spaghetti tag! Leopard shark #83 at 54" long.  He submitted the data online.

He then had another quick hit which turned out to be a nasty little 7-Gill!  This thing had some attitude!

It turned out to be a nice night and I still took the trophy since Squatch zeroed himself out with some minus one fish... the dreaded Thorny Back Ray....  oh wait... that may have been me that zeroed out.  :-[

I think we are about a week or so from launching or at least getting the server all set along with the forum attached to the website.  Keep posting here in the meantime, but I will let you know when we are going to launch.  Maybe we'll get together for some food and drinks on the day it does.   8)

I still don't know how you guys seem to always manage fish without a sonar, Steve.  lol

I love the sense of humor the tow guy had, but he actually gave you another chance to troll by it.

Well done as usual.  It looks like the wind chop will keep us off the water tonight so I'll see you on the sand for some sharking instead!

Nice!  I can't wait for this forum to get all tidied up and attached to the website!

Thanks for posting Don!  I'm thinking now that I should have pinned that mangled yellowfin on some steel leader and crushed that big mako!  lol

Dress him in all black Dave! Easier to elude security during a foot chase...

Welcome aboard Phong!  :)

Saltwater Boat Fishing Reports / Old School Pelagic Trip (7/15)
« on: July 15, 2014, 08:51:37 PM »
Not only was I fishing in the same boat I owned before the Boma, but we had no GPS and we were using instincts to make it happen.  I'd rather GPS, but we made it happen!

Hook up!

We got schooled by some of these yellows.... thankfully we were on our game when the Dodo rolled through!

We got the cow first and pulled off the bull right after!

We left the paddy after a bunch of fish, especially when the Blue's rolled in....

This is what matters...

We should have stayed put, but the lure of tuna was too great.

Blue whales were breaching everywhere, but we had enough running with us to make the trip fun.

Fishing was fun....

Three species...

This where the BBQ needs to heat up!!!

Thing's are great out there right now.  Get your asses out there!

Saltwater Boat Fishing Reports / El Nino at Its Finest (7/12)
« on: July 13, 2014, 07:10:35 AM »
Steve and I took the little Boma out looking for Pelagics again.  On Tuesday we were so close, but we had a short window to fish before the winds popped up.
Once again, Blue whales everywhere!

We came across a 5' mako that we played around with until Steve says "I don't want to be stepping over this thing all day", so we left well enough alone and headed out to the warm blue water.

Along the way, we came across a few empty paddys and a few loaded with dorado!  Holy crap, beautiful big ones too! No bait, frozen or fresh, so we threw the kitchen sink at them from our tackle boxes to no avail.

We came across a huge 500+ pound mola mola that we played around with for a few minutes.  All of a sudden, it took off under water and came jumping clear out of the water!!!!  I've seen Youtube of this and small ones, but never a giant like this in real life.  I've seen it out of the corner of my eye and knew what it was, but Steve and I had front row seating watching this guy.

We came across feeding dolphin and suspected tuna, but we couldn't hook a thing.

It started to get windy and we decided to troll our way home.

Just then, Steve say's "I think I'm bit"...  Ha!  He is alright!

Big female dodo!  17 pounds!  Nice one Steve!

Well, they are here and it's time to strike when the iron is hot!

What does your wife say about the various love pokes from fishy critters ?  :P
Just saw this Dave. She thinks I'll be eaten or bitten in half one of these days.
I keep her at ease by letting her know I have life insurance and personal injury insurance.   8)

Saltwater Boat Fishing Reports / It Is Heating Up Out There! (7/8)
« on: July 10, 2014, 08:14:24 AM »
Steve and I went on an exploratory mission before heading out to the kelp and getting some of the three B's.

The water out front was 74.6!!!  Wow!  Blue whales abound out front right now. We saw no less than 12 individuals. the "Bait Sized" bonito are also here, but moving fast.  We should have caught a ton of them, but only managed 3.

I'll post pics when Photobucket decides to start working again.....

I really hope it sticks for a few years too. Not only for fishing, but the drought conditions too.
I concur whole heartedly.  We need it way too bad.
