I'm actually in the middle of re-writing the history with a lot more detail.  I'll have to wait until I get back from Cabo to finish it though.  In the meantime, please send me any top pics you may have from previous years so I could make a really cool post of all the fun it is.  Thanks guys!

Sorry about the uploading process guys.  I'm trying to figure out why it isn't working.

In the meantime, it still is pretty easy to get an avatar up.

Click on the Specify avatar by URLbutton instead of upload button where you select the avatar.

Download your pic or use a pic on Photobucket or some other photo website.

Copy the "Direct Link" to the picture and paste it in area provided.  It will automatically resize it for you.

That should do it.

Salt Water Shore Fishing Reports / Turning 8 on 8/8
« on: August 08, 2014, 07:17:28 PM »
Well, my daughter turned 8 today and I was home watching her while the wife was out at work.  I asked her what she wanted to do today and she replied... Go Fishing!  That's my girl!

Things weren't ideal since we needed to catch bait at high tide during mid day, but we made it happen.

We didn't score a ton, but we ended up with 20 ghosties to burn.

It was tough to find a good place to fish, so we just found some rocks to critter fish and get out of the wind.  We jumped around to a few spots and I actually found a 2' bonito to jump on my megabait!  Soon as I handed it off to Hannah, it somehow spit the hook... Damn, strike one.

An hour later and we hit another spot.  I told Hannah to reel in her line when she yelled, I got one and it's big!  No sh!t!  It started ripping line and had definite head shakes.  I saw a flash of what looked like a huge spotfin, but could not definitely ID it by any means.

She worked it like a pro, until it made a crazy run right through the dock pilings and snapped her line!  DOH! Strike two!

She was bummed and ready to call it quits, but I told her she has one more strike and asked if she wanted to give it one more try.  She said "I want to catch a fish and not go home catching nothing".  Good girl!

We moved over to just try another area and bam!  I heard her yell, "I got one!"  That's my girl!

Now I'm ready to go home she said, and this Happy Dad was more than ready to oblige now that we were successful.

Fishing was slow, but it was successful and a lot of fun fishing with my little girl.

Show your shark pics! Or pics of your fish that got raped by sharks like this!
7' Mako sharks are usually a welcome site unless they want to feast on your catch!

I have stayed at the finesterra as well.  but the shore break was about 10' and would shake the ground..lol..We fished with a buddy Black fin Don he has his boat in the first slip next to the launch ramp..

You get the timeshare promo deal? $500 /6days 5 nights all inclusive per couple?
Surf was 4-6' when we fished it but the Pargo are crazy and would attack the topwater plugs mid break shooting through the crest!

Tom
I found some pangas online that run $35/hr min 5 hrs that run out of the San Lucas Harbor(up to 3 anglers) and kayaking can be an option but surf is usually up this time of year with all the hurricanes forming up to the south.

Looked for that plug for a min but its not in my normal boxes so I'll have to dig around a bit. We did well during the spring trolling cd 11 and 14 Rapalas wired for sierra toro yellows and of course Needlefish...

Have fun and watchout for 2/1 happyhour specials... order 1 get 2.... :o :o

Thanks Don.  I'm going to wing it down there.  Here is the gear I am bringing.

I also have some Crack and Crabs with me in case I do not find any squid around.

Salt Water Shore Fishing Reports / Re: Morning Bones 8/6/2014

First post and already misidentifying fish! I've never caught such small bonito before. They were good little fights on the light gear.

Was out there again tonight, but no luck. Kelp was everywhere, which was annoying.

LOL, no worries.  I was going to text you that they were mini bones.  These last 5+ years bonito have been hard to come by so any bones are a welcome site!

Limulus, that's awesome knowing the bones are back there now.  I need to get some fresh shark baits for the upcoming season.

Besides all the bones, that looks like a hell of a decent spotty!  Maybe not as big as the ones that you and I used to catch back in the day, but a nice one anyway!

I booked a trip late feb we are going to be at Sandos Finnesterra! Harbor on one side Pacific on the other walking distance from Lovers beach! I fished the beach above the resort 20 some odd years back with Jeff Claussen who at the time was the 'Guy' in cabo to fish the beach with. He was using some bluefish/striper plugs called Rangers a lot and was making his own plugs from wood dowel in pvc material and wiring the hooks in then painting them up for Pargo roosters toro and sierra from the beach.
Leave the rubber at home the triggers kill them... bring some frozen squid if you can to fish strips on leadheads if you want to bang out a bunch of species and singlestrand wire on everything at least a foot of 40-50ish lb and black swivels or rings.

In that area you should get Giant Needlefish Trumpetfish a few croakers asst cabrilla puffers different wrasses grunts and jacks along with scorpionfish and LIZARDFISH!

You should be able to bang out 20 new species easy if you try from the beach and harbor.

I've never really tried doing the shark thing at night from the beach down there but plan on giving it a go this time around.

Hope this helps you out some and I'll dig that DIY Claussen jig out for pics so you can make some if you want. 8)
Thanks Don.  The two pack rods I have are both MH rated 10-20 (one 7'2" casting and one 7'6" spinning) rated to 1.5 and 2oz lures. I'm using a Calcutta 201B loaded with 50# pp and the spinner has 20# pp.

I talked to Phong about what he was using when they killed the roosters from the beach a few years ago.  I'm armed with bigger cast masters, spoons, poppers, hard baits and a few plastics just in case.  I also have an array of hooks and egg sinkers in case I want to load up on species.  I do not have any wire, but I will pick some up just in case.

I leave on Monday morning and get back on Saturday, so it should give me ample time to figure the beach out.  Unfortunately, I'll be light on funds, so I may be limited to the beach only, but may get out in a Panga if I get a chance.

Thanks for the intel, Don.

Was hoping for bonus Triple 7's for last one ... our surf area got blown up 2 years in a row now week of or before the event... Takes a lot more work to Catch Bats in the surf than those bay rays :D

I concur... that's why you send a satellite team into the bay also!  ;D

Welcome aboard Don.  Anytime you want to write that blog, I'll be eagerly waiting.   8)

I've got the picture of the winning bat for 7 if you want to post it

Yep, just post it here and I'll attach it.  I may just re-write this entire post to make it a more storylined event anyway.

Stupid question, or maybe lack of experience here, but can dorado really be caught from the surf?

Just two days ago they were catching them 3 miles off oceanside.  They are caught in the surf off Baja on occasions though, so yep.
