Fishing Talk / Re: Had no idea

What I found curious was they said the hook was found near the shark. The hook also has no fishing line on it so probably wasn't involved in the sharks demise. Sounds like someone planted it there to make a point. Too bad they are implicating the shore fisherman...
Also the hook was huge!

Just my two cents worth...

Salt Water Shore Fishing Reports / Doheny Catch and a Surprise
« on: October 04, 2022, 02:58:52 PM »
Was at Doheny beach on Monday, playing hooky from work. Fished fresh frozen mussels which I collected in Ventura. Got a few little bumps on my line and came back with cleaned off hooks, except for the thread. Finally got a solid bite. Picked up my pole felt it still on and started to reel it in. Didn't feel like anything for a while and finally saw a spot fin croaker slide up on the sand. Nice 12" one. Just didn't put up much of a fight. At least I shook the stripe.

A little later I was looking out toward the mouth of the Dana Point Harbor and I see a splash. First I think dolphins. Then I see a 6 ft plus shark jumping full length out of the water. Then again. I told my wife to look and it proceeded to jump 3 more times fully out of the water, straight up. What a surprise. My wife got a good look at it too. Which made me feel better than when I just tell her about it and get the usual look.
My guess was juvenile GW. Dark on top and white on the bottom. Saw a paddle boarder go around the same area later and was able to compare sizes. Definitely longer than the paddle boarder was tall.

In Monterey this week with my wife for our anniversary. Staying in Big Sur. Hoping to hit a couple beaches while we're here.

That's awesome.
I lost a rod that way but a batray or shark headed for Catalina with it.

I'm at Doheny Beach camping. It was quite at the beach except for one unexpected bite. Fishing mackerel for batrays got something on the line which seemed like a batray at fist and then felt a tail hit the line. 30 seconds later the line snapped. Pulled it in and I got bit off at the mono leader. My wife said she saw a shark break the surface while I was running down to get my pole. Oh well. Another lost to not being prepared.
I usually fish just south of Doheny at Capistrano beach. Caught lots of batray there and hooked into a few sharks which broke off. I'm 0 for 7 now.

I have a rod holder which is hung from the ceiling. The limiting factor for how many rods you can fit on any rod holder is the reels. This one has the reel end of the rod alternating ends.

Sounds like a great trip. And your timing was perfect missing the tornadoes.

Going to Florida to fish is on my wish list, especially after seeing Bens catches. 8)
