There's DIY versions of this concept. Best thing about it is it can launch a whole or half mack
Kinda cool, for AOs within 100 feet or so of where you can park a vehicle. I don't see lugging an air-compressor and power supply onto the sand to often.

The baby octopus does stay on through a powercast very well, huh Jim? Iv'e tried it a number of times and have found it does best in areas of or near rocky structure and mostly attracts the likes of cabazon, grass rockfish and yes, the dreaded eels though. Lately I've been eyeballing the whole giant squid (in the 18" range) that they sell at my local Asian market and thinking about trying to soak one of those on a double hook or slider rig soon...

Tackle Talk / Re: Paddy's Guide to Affordable Big Bait Heavers
« on: October 19, 2015, 10:56:03 PM »
Thanks for sharing, this should save a few people some hours who are thinking on adding a new rod to their arsenal. I picked up an Okuma Longitude CX 12' 20-40 3oz-8oz for $85 off Amazon a couple weeks ago. Used it a few times and its a bit better than what I expected for the price, quality and performance wise...durability? we'll see...Action a bit slow & broomsticky for my taste but IMO most surf rods are designed and rated towards the east coast, plug casting, striped bass style of fishing, which doesn't require keeping a bait chunk on your hook thru your cast or needing to feel a nibble on the bait once its soaking, like us SoCal surfcasters require. So if I could offer one piece of advice when choosing a rod that is nationally marketed,it would be to tend towards the models rated on the faster end of the action scale as opposed to the slow, XH end of it. Ive found it seems as the ounce ratings of the rods are more for a bait-less fast and quick powercast, like you would throw when practice casting just a piece of lead at the baseball field, rather than the type of cast needed to actually keep a bait on your hook thru cast. ie: I find a 4-8oz rated rod will not load up when casting a baited 4oz rig, so I take that into consideration when looking at that rating of a rod as well. But that's just me and the personal adjustments I've come to use over the years when I look at a rods weight and action rating. Im sure yall got your own as well. Good luck on finding a stick that works well for you.

Don,t feel like the lone ranger Lat, yesterday evening while putting the last handful of gear in the bed of my truck before heading out to soak a squish or two I must have left my wallet sitting on the rail of my truck bed because I spotted it in the street about a half block away from my house upon returning from my short sesh. Same thing, all cards & DL there but short 100 greenbacks, & I'm not talking macks. At least the my baitshop was cool enough to give me some squish & a fresh frozen mack on credit for a few days till my next in there. I post sesh recap in separete post shortly...

The title of this post, oddly enough now is how I, and I'm sure other PS members feel that have just read that last tease of a post... Now waiting for the "more later"... sure it'll be a good read as always.

Salt Water Shore Fishing Reports / Re: Just salad in South VC

@EricH...I live near County Line so between Dume and Mugu is my home stretch, but I venture up onto the sands of Hueneme/Oxnard/Ventura areas (without getting too specific) often and depending on the season/conditions/mood, l do from Carpenteria down to Redondo and anywhere inbetween. Maybe we'll cross lines with each other one evening....Peace

Salt Water Shore Fishing Reports / Just salad in South VC
« on: October 08, 2015, 09:06:03 PM »
Ended up "AO hopping" in South VC last night from sundown till 11ish...Hit a few spots that don't require more than a 10 minute trek from the time you park till your testing the waters...& confirm, nothing but chopped eel grass salad being carried along the bottom by a steady current, except for the few pounds that instantly wrap your rig seconds after the lead touches down on the bottom. Y'all know what I'm saying.... Fairly heavy 3-5ft surf just came up and swell is forecast to get up to 3'-6' by Friday night. Damn, before last night I was planning on logging some serious hours on the soak this weekend,  Oh well... patience ...  "and this too shall pass"
Luck to all..soon

Tackle Talk / Re: Sand Spikes
« on: October 05, 2015, 04:02:24 PM »
I've always used the angle iron type with a piece of pvc tube mounted midway for the rod butt to sit in, with a bolt across the bottom of it like Castmaster talks of. Ive had the same two holders for over 20 years, still going strong and I haven't left one behind yet in all those trips. One is made of Aluminum angle iron the other from steel angle iron, both a bit under 6 ft long. The pro of the steel one is that it's rigid when in use and won't flex when your rod get's doubled over and seems to have a better "hook set before you can get to your pole" ratio and doesn't rock in the wind when it's gusting as much as the more flexible aluminum one. The Con of the steel, it's Heavy!
As far as how I get them sunk into the sand, wet or dry... They have the foot wings welded on 18" up from the bottom but after they're started in then you can just kind of rock it back and forth while applying a bit of downward force and they will dig their selves down into the sand as deep as needed with out any effort.
I also like to attach a fish rag to the bolt that the butt sits on so it's hanging right there so I always have a place to wipe off my hands just before I pick up my rod and reel and also have a slot for pliers to sit in.

Tackle Talk / BREAKING POINT?
« on: October 03, 2015, 09:05:12 PM »
I'd like to ask you guys...When your sputnik lead does get hung up on some bottom rocks in a position where, in spite of its collapsible legs, you end up having to break it off, where is the desired breaking point and how do you achieve ensuring that it does break off at that point? I'm asking advise because I found out last week where I think I'd rather avoid the failure point to be because I ended donating 15 yards of braid, hook, swivel, steel leader AND sputnik. Is there a way to get it to break where you only lose the sinker and not the whole top shot/shock leader? If a few of you would let me know how your personal sequence goes from reel arbor to sinker that would be super helpful...ie:This is mine (from arbor to sinker) Main running line, 250yds 40# mono to 30 feet of 65# braid as top shot/shock leader via double uni to 3-way swivel via uni to 80# Fluorocarbon via uni to 120# snap swivel via uni with 6oz sputnik clipped to it. Obviously the failure point is at the double uni connecting the 65# braid to 40# mono because the 40# is the weakest link in the chain. Do I just live with this or is there a better way to do it without snapping off during initial cast?

I was surprised at how fast these hammers swim. Wow! Imaging the first run they'd give ya on the long rod & 40lb...Check out this link to the full length video, direct from the fisherman who filmed it from his yak. Up in SBC fishing for boneys.. I'm thinkin about yaking a mack out or having a yaker go out and lure some hammers back into the surf line where my mack is soaking, like this one was....@Eric H, not far from VC at all bro!

Fishing Talk / Re: Crazy Beach Crowds

@where'smy beer,
I foul hooked a jet-skier if that counts, or he foul hooked himself actually. Had a long-casted line soaking up in VC, rod in holder, when suddenly a Jet-Skier races in and starts wave jumping right in front of where my line entered the water. Then before I could reach it to open the bail up, my rod doubles over and drag ssszzzzscreamings out for two seconds as I simultaneously see the rider yanked off backwards from his ski into the surf. His shoulder got under my line as he was going away from the beach until the hook and sinker caught a piece of it thru his wetsuit. Can you say ooouuuchh! and I'll bet he'll be looking out for surf fisherman with lines out before he does any waving jumping again....
