Perfect conditions to land a big Sevengill, but the big stuff apparently don't like perfect conditions.

This ^^^^
I’m almost now convinced that our definition of perfect conditions and perfect conditions from a sharks perspective are somewhat different. If you think about it, our definition of “perfect conditions” is based on what is comfortable and convenient for us. No cold wind to make us miserable, low surf so our rigs stay put and a shark is easier to get onto the sand, no salad so we can keep our bait set and avoid kelp monsters, etc...all of which is meaningless to a shark or fish.  It’s rare, if ever, I have a good night or day when “conditions are stellar”, hence my saying, “conditions are so good it’s tough”

Looks like they are currently out of the 13/0 size. The last time, they were in stock around Christmas, I picked up 3 boxes so should be set for a long while now. (I currently have over 100 of the 13/0)

Since you didn’t lose a single rig in 2017 I guess your set for a while on those 😂

Those are some nice pig calicos! They fight OK when not hooked on heavy sharkin gear huh? 😉
That second sandy almost looks like a sandy/calico hybrid by its markings...
Obviously you guys aren’t prone to hangover sea sickness 🤮

Seriously sounds like it could be lobster dragging it into their crevice or weeds...
Most of the time when 7s hit you’ll get a small double bounce and then very slack line as they tend to come towards you after they pick up your bait, but 13/0 circles pulley rigged have done good on my 7s
I was going to ask you the same exact question when it comes to taxman. We had 5 pull like that on the initial 5-10 second run lately .Do you think a 13/0 4xstrong circle takes to much pressure for the barb into a strong hide? It seems like if the barb gets set it shouldn’t  get thrown, that why I’m thinking it’s not getting set. When it pops out it is a sharp pop and by the feel of it I thought it was my line breaking, and surprised to see my rig intact when reeled in...

Congrats Mike! I know you put a lot of hours in over the last 6 months, your definitely the 2017 mvp, you put ALOT of sharks on the board...

Tom-To keep things consistent, for the contest results my taxman should show as 88”*, as I used the same method for measurement that Mike took the 2” penalty for on his winner.

The 3/4 day pass prize actually will work out great, as I still have the 1/2 day passes to use as well and can now use them both on back to back days  and only have to make one drive to SD to do so..😉

and for the reel repair, Chad...hmmm, I’ll have to think....not sure I want my VR to be your VanStaal  guinua pig...I have an old Penn Surfmaster 200 I inherited from my Grandpa that seems to be in working order but would be cool to have serviced and upgraded?

I love catching big rays! I love catching big sharks! I love catching monsters period!

And if I'm going to be honest, a little bait making session with some extra beers involved every now and then is always fun too ;D
Don’t get me wrong, for me even casting practice is still a good time...😊

Very good Chip! Hopefully you get more than a cookie cutter response that avoids your very legitimate  detailed questions. My guess is they will just send you the code as it is written and not stick their neck out doing any further interpretation of it...hopefully I’m proven wrong 😉🦈

Hey, welcome aboard bro, glad you finally found the “real” surf fishing site. The knowledge you can pick up from these guys and on here is invaluable stuff when it comes to sharkin...😉

As the guy that had a face to face with a DFW warden late Friday night, here’s some of what I came w away with...The targeting part is not the thing they can pin on someone although if you have prior knowledge of it being a spot where whites have been landed it doesn’t bode well for you. The letter of the law that could be your detriment is the one that was that states that “once you have knowledge that it is a white on your line you must immediatly cut your line”. This means immediatly without doing anything in between. This means pausing to take any pictures! The only pictures that could be OK would be have to be taken by a third party of a release being performed and they couldn’t be of the shark being dragged back down from anywhere but already in the water as that would indicate the line was not cut immediatly but dragged out of the water after it was identified as a white. PM me with questions about the encounter as opposed to out here.

Hey Verne, looking back now do you still think these were soups or 7s?

I'm always excited to tangle with a grinner.

I agree! I'll take a good 7 Gill or Soupfin fight, over the back breaking fight of a GWS, any day of the week!  :)
[/quote]
Substitute “Bat” in for “GWS” and I’d agree with your statement Andre at this point in time...I could only wish GWS catches become so common the become like current bat ray catch status to me.
Our progression is interesting though, if you look back to the beginnings of this site, bat rays were a very sought target year round, not just by-catch..That has seemed to decline and they’ve almost become of eel like status except for one day a year...
Maybe it’s time for a Saturday night grinner fight ,April grinner week or something along that line to  evolve?

On the bright side sounds like you weeded out some beaches to avoid at the batfight. ;)
It was a go to bat spot, I guess the sharks figured that out too...
I have the feeling LA might have a shortage of bats for this upcoming fight 😧

Damn that is a young one. Sounds like they are far stronger than a 7 gill with the azz whipping you took.

Jim
Inch for inch they they can’t be compared to A 7gill...if you look, a big part of a sevengills length measurement comes from just tail. The body mass of a 90” Great White is going to be a lot more than a 90” seven gill..and I think they eat them for lunch as well...

OK, Things have finally settled down and I just put a tape on the rod I threw down as a lenghth reference and made sure the butt end was flush with its nose tip and made a note of what eye wrap it’s tail tip was at, which was easy to remember because every guide wrap on this rod is done in a different color than the other ones. LET ME JUST SAY I WAS SURPRISED AT THE NUMBER THAT THE MARK TAPED OUT TO, which wasn’t hard to do since I have never known the length of this particular rod as it is not a factory production, it is my pieced together project rod made up of 4 different sections from separate rods all pieces together, so didn’t have a total
Rod length to guesstimate it against....
I think you should sleep on it another night before I post up the number Mike 🤤😪🤫🤨😘
Have a good night y’all....😴

Ok, morning guys 🙂...and the answer is....90” ...your safe Mike 😛
