Went Saturday morning for halibut but took a skunk. In need of redemption, I got my big gear ready for a night sesh to hit the peaking hi tide at sunset. Got to the beach just before dark and made my way to the beach. Just enough light left to make out fellow P soul alumnus Mike aka Pinoyfisher! Stop and chat then head down a ways and set up shop. Mac for bait, cut in half and let fly. On a long first soak, I didn’t notice Mike had already put a nice soupie on the beach. Changed bait and get a pick up after a few. I’m whooping and hollering thinking I got the first fish hooked up... lol, jokes on me... ends up being a zippy medium sized bat that Mike disgustingly drags onto the beach for me ...lol ! https://i.imgur.com/JhdbnzW.jpg                                                                                                      Mike moves down after we text back and forth, he’s in a spot that’s getting grassy, the section I was at was still pretty clean. Few more cast outs and summer sharking strategies exchanged with Mike, I get a pick up and long run. Very hard fighting fish with heavy drag pulls! It fought all the way in and didn’t give up in the skinny, sliding and running back out in the receding surf...a very nice Leo!  https://i.imgur.com/2q68R4S.jpg                https://imgur.com/a/7EXQmQT.                                          Measured 59” (almost leveled up!) and my new personal best Leo 8)

Had a chance to go out Friday night with a friend and do a little sharking. There was an actual wedding set up on the beach and a park ranger keeping an eye on it. He stepped out of his vehicle and checked our licenses as we walked by. The Bio bloom was  in full effect every time a wave crashed. We were fishing the rising tide and had mackerel for bait.  I got the first bite, a medium sized bat.      https://i.imgur.com/Z6S0uVb.jpg                                                                                     We were visited by a few of the wedding guests who were interested by our glow sticks, and maybe driven away by the New Country that the DJ was playing ::) My friend was next up with a crushing run that put his new gear to test, a Penn 8000 spinner and matching Penn rod. It’s been a while since he’s been on a big fish but he settled in and went toe to toe with it, a huge 53” super fat Bat.                                               https://i.imgur.com/WDF1rs2.jpg.                                                                                                   It it was getting close to 11:00 when I get a nock down and quick take off. Set the hook home and she’s off like a race horse! I can feel it rolling up in the line and then come back unraveled. Reel down on it and I’ve got nothing...I thought she rolled off! :( Line comes tight again and I’m stoked she’s still on! She gets to the end of the line again and I feel it rolling up again! Haven’t had this happen before, this ones got juke moves like a running back! Line goes slack again! >:( Reel like crazy and now she’s foaming up the skinny with her tail. This one pulled all the moves on me (except jumping). Passed the rod to my friend and took her in for some pics. She kept rolling on the sand too, lots of spunk on this little girly  8)  https://i.imgur.com/0MbZNUT.jpg.                                                                            Only 63” but a very muscular fish. Hope the sharks stay around and hope y’all get on em too! Yee Haw ;D

Salt Water Shore Fishing Reports / We just needed a spoonful of soup
« on: April 19, 2019, 10:52:41 AM »
Have been searching new fishing grounds because the surf has been filling in and changing up all the reef and holes that have produced in the past for me. Found a spot that has potential for both low and high tides. Steve Mirasol and I have been itching for some shark action so I told him to come up my way and give this spot a try. We met up at 8:00 and got to walking. Setup rods and pinned some  fresh caught macs provided by Steve. Surf was large on the outside and coming straight in but a nice trough was in casting distance and our sputs were holding the bottom. We chatted it up about the week for a few minutes until my reel interrupted with a quick and jerky screech. Set the hook home and it’s game on! Good runs left and right through the middle but the shore dump was outrageous. Timed it between sets and Steve tails a nice 54” female Leo for me.   https://i.imgur.com/dFPrxhY.jpg     https://i.imgur.com/DHAEQhf.jpg    We recast and Steve is next up with a screaming freight train of a run! He’s buttoned down and thumbing the spool and it’s not quitting! We followed it down the beach and he gets it turned back and the tug of war is on with a very tough surf bat! He gets it close but the shore pound is still going on the steep bank.  I timed the sets, grab the leader and a nostril and we dragged that monster up the hill   https://i.imgur.com/qHnrX8m.jpg   A very heavy, pregnant female! It was so heavy that when we flipped it over to take a measurement, the cobble gave way and it belly slid back into the surf! It was easily 53” to 55”. I recast as Steve took a well deserved break. In a few I’m getting little bounces, then a drag pull, point the rod as it swims away and set the hook home again! This one comes in a little easier so I’m thinking a smaller Leo. Get it to the shore and it’s a Seven gill!   https://i.imgur.com/c4TiilV.jpg   https://i.imgur.com/FQWRWRo.jpg   https://i.imgur.com/jP8qyFb.jpg   https://i.imgur.com/ciCTQzo.jpg                       We tried a while longer trying to get a Soupfin for the Grand Slam but the tide was changing and the middle was starting to get rough. Sorry so long, but I just wanted to share the stoke and hope everyone gets theirs too!

Salt Water Shore Fishing Reports / Friday night
« on: April 28, 2018, 11:39:39 AM »
Had plans to meet Steve (Treecatcher) about 8:30 for a shark sesh, he had fresh queen fish for bait plus we had macs and some bat ray too. He got new waders and was stoked to show them off. No more wetsuit he said.. lol ;D. Conditions were good, we were right on top of the hi tide, only slight current and occasional salad. We tried the queen fish for a bit for only critter bites  so we switched up to Mac. After a short soak Steve gets a legit screamer but is too late to pick up the rod and stick it home. He’s bummed as he reels in a clipped off Mac tail but still has his sweet waders ;D. Just a few minutes after, my rod starts peeling out and l set the hook home on what was probably clipping off Steve’s bait. Speed runs left and right, definitely sharkish attitude. Steve finally gets his chance to sandhand for me, a beautiful looking 72” Soupfin, and a new PB soupie too..     https://imgur.com/user/jerrycant

Salt Water Shore Fishing Reports / Bat fight practice 3/29
« on: March 30, 2018, 07:25:16 PM »
So with dredging casting doubt about the Batfight ( they're dredging the Carlsbad lagoon too) I wanted to recon the surf where I've had some success with the Rays in the past. A solo sesh, I hit the spot just before sundown with macs for bait. Gave the first bait a good soak because weight was holding and conditions were great ( no weeds). 1st bait comes back critter chewed, so at least I'm getting bit. Macs are kinda small so their getting cut in half, tail section pinned and sent out. I'm getting the hang of my new Saltist 30/ Penn Battalion/ 50# braid and 80# topshot. I can barely feel the FG knot when it rus thru the guides (tying this from now on). Good soak going and baits holding, but line is slacking up, reel down to tighten it up and there is life on the end of my line, it's good weight on the end of my line when I set the 10/0 octopus to it! Good heavy initial run to the north so I'm thinking I got a bat but the run doesn't last before it turns south. Gain a bunch of line back on the turn, but I'm feeling weird twangs like it's running low and snagging reef. Getting worried about that. Line starts slacking I'm thinking dang break off! but keep reeling, it's heading at me! Catch up to it again! I know it's not a bat, but there's a deeper trough for it get some more big drag pulls. When I get to where I can see it's bronzy shillotte in the moonlit skinny, it's long tail flips and curls and I know it's my first Seven gill! Sneak up from behind and grab for the tip of its tail, yeah she knows I'm there and swings at me with her mouth (LOL nervously).Grabbed again, and heather onto the very cobbly beach! She's a big girl at 83", wide head and body. Didn't want take too long with pics in slick cobble so carefully remove the hook and dragged back into the trough. Amped over it all, I only stayed a little longer. Was off the beach by 1000. Sorry so long but I hope you liked the read... Joel is gonna post some pics in comments as my phone needs updating (Dad phone problems ::). Good luck to allBat Fighters tomorrow. Peace!

Salt Water Shore Fishing Reports / Big Pancake for Breakfast - 4/14/17
« on: April 14, 2017, 12:08:25 PM »
Had a half day Thursday and today off... took a walk on the beach down south yesterday for some Intel and from the cliffs above during the day. Missed a chance to catch up with Josh (Rasta) for a Wednesday night surf soak. He forgot his big gear and stayed further south to throw swim baits for hali. Had the Itch still...Halibut would be the target... so decided to hit the Goon this morning at the peak low to see what was funneling in... Throwing the LC hardbait, casted over the sandbar and into the channel that was still emptying out to sea. Fan cast the shallow sand bar, running it up the back of the bar... 5 casts or so and feel pressure...think it's grass on the way out... give it rip to free and she zips off down the back of the bar! Fish on! It's got some good weight behind it, pulling drag and thumping hard, bring it close 3X and its back after the ledge of the bar again! Got it close once more and scoop her into the net (so glad I brought it!)! Whoo Hoo! Legit 31"    .   I hope I'm itchy tomorrow!!! Tight lines everyone! 8)

« on: March 03, 2017, 11:32:03 AM »
Have gone out the last three Thursdays practicing for the bat fight. First Thursday using bad batt in the surf, was skunked. Second Thursday with good bait, hit the Carlsbad Lagoon for two rips and zippo, Another skunk but feeling better about the situation. Last night with fresh bait again hit another Carlsbad spot, surf was down and no current or weeds, was able to hang a small Sandy and a small bat 33",the spot has gotten me numbers and sizes between 40 to 55 inches . Will try again this weekend and next week too to pinpoint their whereabouts.

Salt Water Shore Fishing Reports / First Suopie! 6/4/2016 AM report
« on: June 04, 2016, 06:48:51 PM »
The title says it all... been trying for some time. Had a super low tide (-1.6/3:30am) in my favor that I had to take advantage of and was happy to have Robert (Shoresurfer) along for company. Got to the spot and had ALOT of sand to cross to get to the waters edge, got baits into the water, confident it was going to help get our baits into the zone. Macks were thawing for some time in the small beach break and slight northern current...then the magic words were uttered by me this time..."15 minutes more then we reel in and move"... it wasn't more than 5 that my spool started spinning double time! Speedy and strong initial run with some tail slappage, first west then north. Gained back line when it swam back at me but hard to see until it erupted one last time in the skinny...SHARK!!! Tailed my 66" Soupie prize...

Quick pics and back she went...

We got baits back out and began to see dawns early light creep up from behind... I managed a full figured 50" momma bat that was built like a pyramid...

and a young gull that clipped my line...

Robert got something sharky (tail slaps) that completely spooled him...

Stock photo of Robert wondering things...lol brother!

I just want to say thanks to all who are part of this community, I've leaned a lot from all your posts and enjoy the shares and pics...

FISH ON!

Salt Water Shore Fishing Reports / Carlsbad BeachBomb run 5/22
« on: May 22, 2016, 10:46:45 PM »
Got out early this morning and met Robert at the spot to a rising Sun and tide... We were expecting some action but it started out slow. We were soaking mac parts in the medium sized surf but the Sputniks were holding and not that much grass either.  Rob starts grumbling about us not having gotten bit yet...we were texting Joel and thinking about moving over to the goon ...and a minute later his line is screaming North in the South current, Boom! Robert is hooked up to a good one!  He's on this fish a good  10 minutes before the fight enters the shore dump zone ... They fight so hard right there... nosing down and trying to grind that stuff out their mouth... I can see it's 50 /50+'' ...we just need 15 more yards...then Boom! his line breaks.  Robs bummed but he rigs and sets up again ...  stock photo of Robert waiting for another bite ...Hahaha... We fire out our last two pieces of bait, swearing the next one will not get away...getting ready to call it again then Boom! I'm on!        I can tell this is a good one too I lay into it but just enough to where we have a chance to tire it out ...10 minutes and then the battle begins in the shore dump...back and forth we go... my 40# sounds like violin strings...Rob gets a hold of it by the nose and almost beaches her... on his belly! ..that was scary.....53" ,super preggers, ~130 (?).   Thanks rob for being there... These beach bombs can be hard to solo ... I hope you all enjoyed the read...tight lines and until next time... Peace :)

Anyone see the news regarding tuna crabs? Apparently they are marching north from Mission Beach leaving their minions to control our beaches...

Friday at San Elijo

Embedded spy in Carlsbad Saturday morning...

Met Robert (Shoresurfer) at 5:00am at the local spot to get in some big fish action... rising tide and small surf. Joel (HalibutJoel) was gonna meet up with us at 600. Me and Robert are soaking mac parts on the edge of a rip that's helping pull the scent to the outside. On the second or third piece I've farmed out (mushmac) I pin a head and heave the old hoe on a high arc that leaves Robert saying "why do you always get bit first, I can cast that far too". His last post had him on 3 before I hooked one so casting distance hasn't been a factor at the spot. Reeled in the slack and left it sitting.Sure enough reel starts its little song we all love to hear...zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
It pulled a lot harder making me think it was a larger model, taped out 47"

Joel shows up with his trout buddy John, just after we drag it back into the drink. They started throwing everything hes got after what hes nicknamed for... up and down and along the side of us. I'm not there everyday but I think Spearos have taken everything out of there (3 were there later on). The bite slows and Robert and I make a move south down the beach...tide's at full pool and grass is starting come in. I move back, cast a fresh oozing bait that I know is gonna git bit and set it in the spike, jog back to get my gear...Yep you know its coming...less than 30 seconds after it hitting the water its in a big bats mouth and Joel sees it stripping off line...He picks up the rod and hes on...He buttons down the drag and starts yanking but the handles on the wrong side for him (I am left hand dominant/ reel with my right hand) hes giving it everything hes got and making progress despite the handicap...He gets the fish in fast, putting the 40# to the test, but the fish is still hot in the skinny steep beach and breaks off in the surf just as I'm about to grab it...AAARRGGGHHHH!!!!!! We stay a little longer until the grass was too much leaving us wanting more....until next time.

Tight lines everyone...

Jerry

Went out Tuesday night with my friend Robert to try and put some critters on the end of our lines. We got to the spot with plenty of light to retie and find "bumpy water". Some times it takes a team to put biggies on the beach in the dark and we need it (2 lost, 1 caught). 20 minutes into the sesh I'm the first to get bit...

Everybody loves the "Bendo" shot ...

45" model
We reset and roll into the night...

Dark time comes and the kittys roll in...

54.5"... a new PB
Robert misses 2 hits and I get 1 more

40"...
Robert gets a round ray to break the skunk and we roll out before 10.

Happy Memorial Day Weekend everyone...

Like others, it has been a week or two since I had a chance to get out and fish. Intending to use up some older bait, I went on a solo mission to see if I could get on the Leo contest board. Still groggy from a night out with my wifa, I was halfway down the 78 when I realized I forgot my phone for pix. Glad I did go back to get it. Checked the first spot, not enough beach to fish from so I headed to my second spot, a steep and deep beach break. Not a lot of salad but the waves were bigger. I was still set up with "grinner gear" on my rod and did not retie, overkill if I get a Leo but that's OK by me. Set the spike and chucked out kitty mac chunks. I was working between the shore dump and inside sets. First chunk rots off after a of couple casts, five minutes after soaking the second chunk I get a serious pickup and strong run, batter up...

Finally a chance to practice my dentistry skills.

I was giving this fish everything I had but only had 30# mainline. It had some good long runs through out the battle. I did have to give line to let it run around a large floating paddie near shore that came into play during the 20/25 minute battle. A small group of people gathered to watch, adding to the pressure. Luckily I was able to boogieboard it in on top of the shore dump because of the steep beach...

I was too wiped out to flip it over so that's why the bottom measure. I asked one of the guys who was watching to take some pix...Tape shot was bad but askers cant be choosers ...It measured out at 55" (no BSin').
They're fairly symmetrical top to bottom right? Dragged it out a little and some big shore dump got it and it flipped itself over and cruised off. Thanks for reading and tight lines everyone.
