Freshwater Shore Fishing Reports / Cats 6/12
« on: June 13, 2019, 11:20:13 AM »
After these last 3 consecutive hot days it was time to go.
The water warmed quite a bit and my fingers told me it was 70°.

Tossed out some fresh mack chunks on 2 rods.
Rods sat quiet for an hour and was about to switch spots.
Put on a fresh chunk and casted further down the bank.
10 min later i got picked up.
After a fun little battle this one hits the grass.

She could have gone another inch but kept flopping and pushed her head passed the tape.

I moved to another spot hoping it would be a little more consistent.

Spot 2 wasnt any different , rods sat quiet for another hour and got soaked by the sprinklers.
It was almost time to go when i got picked up again.
This one felt a little better.
Got her to color and did the solo net job.

Since i had strugled with the 1st fish to get a halfway decent pic with my crappy phone i used the camera. My laptop took a crap so i need to use someone elses computer to get the pics off the sd card. For whatever reason i did use my phone for the scale shot.

Ill have the original pic up later this week.
At this time i guess you cant call it official.

On another note, im not too happy that i cant get a full pic of the fish on the scale. Im gona see if i can see if i can hang it from a tree.

Im debating about going back out tonight.

Fishing Talk / Tuna filleting question
« on: June 01, 2019, 07:17:28 AM »
Ive always had the deckhands do the filleting for me but going forward i will be doing most my tuna fishing on a private boat.

Im always beat to sh!t afterwards due to my back and usually lack of sleep. Just rinsing my gear and showering is a major chore.

Question is:

Does the filleting need to be done the same night or can i do it first thing in the morning?

Was out on my buddies boat last night fishin calicos and sand bass.

We spotted a sea snake swimming on the surface about 5 ft from the boat.

It was about 2 feet long and thin.

I googled "sea snake california" and saw many articles just like this one from last year

https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.latimes.com/local/california/la-me-sea-snake-newport-beach-20180111-story.html%3foutputType=amp

I believe it was one of these venomous yellow bellued sea snakes. Just dont see what else it could be.

Should i report it to DFW?

Salt Water Shore Fishing Reports / Back at it
« on: April 06, 2019, 06:26:02 PM »
Currently staying at my parents beach house with the girlfriend  in ventura.

Got out during sunset yesterday for a few hrs soakin fresh macks. Its been a few yrs since i last soaked. My problem was that i can fish for calicos,  stripers and butts in the same area. That was more of a priority at the time and still is..

Surf was small but the wind was rippin.

Not even a bite but it was nice to have the long rods back out.

Ill be out tomorrow night. About to walk to the local brewery right now.

Freshwater Shore Fishing Reports / Catfish 3/28

I got out for a bit the other night.

Brought 2 setups. First cast went into the tree and ended up busting it off. Forgot to bring extra hooks so fished one for the night.

Fished 2 new spots for a total of 2 hrs lookin for larger models.

One bite one fish @ 10.1 lbs

She had some funky discoloration near the cuadal fin.

Gonna keep trying new spots till i find the bigger ones.

Full swing catfish season is almost here 8)

Fishing Talk / Catfish
« on: March 26, 2019, 06:15:34 PM »
I gave it a shot last night for a couple hours and nothin.

Water was cool but not cold, still not ideal though.

I got to thinkin though...

Ive fished this private housing lake on and off for about ten yrs now.

When i first started fishing the place the average cat was about 3 to 6 lbs. Now the average is about 8-11 lbs. Occasionally a bigger one comes through.

Ive fished a bunch of different spots and these cats are all consistent in this size range. Ive come to the conclusion that these are schoolies (the ones roaming).

Without doing any research i believe the much larger models aren't moving around so much and are hangin in one spot for the most part.
Ive talked to the residents and have a couple tell me they've got em in the 30lb range.

This place is a concrete pit and there is absolutely no structure.

My biggest out of here was a 14.8 and ive only fished that particular spot once for maybe 20 minutes. There happens to be a large tree that hangs high up over the water.

BOOM! Then it hit me. Fallen branches = structure.
For that 14.8 , i just happened to be soaking right where some fallen branches would have landed.

I pretty excited to hit the spot again and do feel there will be more larger models here.

I pulled up google earth and there is one other spot that has a large over hanging tree. Gonna try that spot as well.

Im feelin pretty good about this and think there will be some nicer models in the near future. 8)

You guys better bring your A game ;D  :P ;)

Fishing Talk / Cow tuna+stiff rods+circles question
« on: February 19, 2019, 05:12:03 PM »
I love circle hooks, been using them a long time and have never had a problem with them.

Ive had great success with them for tuna as well.

Im now just.getting into long range stuff.

I picked up a calstar grafifhter 780 XXH (8ft) 80-130 and paired it with accurate BV2 1,000 spooled almost all the way with 100lb power pro.

Theres so much talk out there about stiff rods and circles not mixing.
Considering my rods is a total broomstick,  is the circle going to be able to turn properly and do its thing?
