: Wine Barrel(s) Bar
: Latimeria September 02, 2020, 06:27:27 AM
Every since I was a little kid, my uncle had a wine barrel bar that always made me think of the Wild West.  I've been wanting one for years, but never had the space or money to get what I actually wanted.
The single nicer barrel bars range from $550-$1,000 and the double barrel bars I've seen and actually liked go for over $2K.  Not a lot of money for some, but not the type of "loose" change I keep in my pocket.  I searched around and many of the barrels are expensive, but found a few that suits my needs at half the price from what everyone was asking for them.

I'm making this an evolving project as I'm not sure if I'm using a live edge bar top or butcher block.  Other ideas I've been floating around is a Baja themed fishing bar... so many ideas are going through my head, that I'm just going to let this project evolve like a piece of art.

The stock barrels straight from Napa Valley.  One French Oak and one American Oak barrel.

Not sure if I'm going to cut the barrels in half long ways and add doors to the back or use them as complete barrels and cut a door with hinges on the back side of the and leave them whole.  I actually did a lot of sanding, but wanted to keep it just rough enough to not look like a barrel that just came off the shelf.  I polished up the rings to give it a shine when I stain the wood and those bands should pop!!!

The problem with cutting the door is the rings would fall off and the barrel would fall apart.  They are only held together because the wood is swollen and only the rings are there to keep it together.  I saw some ideas online and liked the pan head bolts in every slat to keep it all one piece well after it all dries out.  The stainless shiny bolts and bands should look pretty sweet with the darker stain when I get there.

That was a lot of screws!!!!!!  I think I put in 180 of them total just for one barrel!!!  I had to order more so I could start the French Oak barrel now.

I'm heading over to see my wood-working neighbor today to see about some live edge/kiln dried wood he has in his shop.  If it's wide enough, I probably just go for it and make that the "double" centerpiece of the bar.

Well, I'll keep updating this project as it goes.  I'm getting a new patio and cover in the backyard soon.  Construction guys are all backed up a few months at the moment, so just waiting for them to finish up the current project before they start on mine.  It will give me a little time to really get these pieces looking really good without having to rush.

Check back for updates.

I actually could use two whiskey barrels to finish off my grand idea!  Are they smaller than 55 gallon?

Not sure about the size, I will look at mine and see.

That's the beauty of it.  I invite you over to show off the new bar and you bring a new good bottle of Patron to help break it in!  Well, you are a Rum guy, so maybe some Appleton estate?  ;)

I could pour some Costco rum in a Gatorade bottle for you.

Have you considered the merits of a fine cardboardeaux?

I got the stain on after work yesterday.  Awesome wood grain patterns of the oak!

The barrel soaked up the stain a little too quick and it was hard finishing them.  I should have only done one at a time then trying to get them both done.

In either case, they are stained and just need the outdoor Spar Urethane to complete the wood seal.

Next will be to work on the bar top.

25 proof in a can!  Wow!

My girl picked it up at Trader Joes. She tossed me one, of course I didn't bother to read the label thinking it was going to be your normal Monday night beer. Chugged the first sip and WOW! Haha wasn't expecting that.

Broke down the old bunk beds and decided to make a bar top.

Really thick wood and would cost me a fortune to buy right now.

Should be a perfect fit...

All lined up well.  I have some old manilla nautical rope and some deep pour bar-top epoxy to put on after the sanding/staining.

Going to be sweet.  I'll probably be too broke to fill the bar with booze, so please donate to a good cause...  hahahaha

Now waiting to add all of the cool stuff like nautical rope to the edge and pout the tabletop epoxy over it.

I also started another project since I'm making a "bar", so I made an enclosure for my dart board, but adding all the bells and whistles and trying to make it match the rest of the bar.  Even put "Straps on it to resemble the wine barrels.  All reclaimed wood.

Here are just the doors.

I need to start finishing projects before I start new ones, but I need to get the actual patio done first!
Thanks for checking it out!

Nautical rope lined the table and filled in the gaps at the top so the epoxy won't pour through.

Whoops, almost forgot I finished the dart board.

The original doors I made wouldn't fit, so I took some more of the old reclaimed wood and made a set of doors to (sort of) match the wine barrels.

The hinges were a pain since I couldn't get them to line up just right with the wood I selected, so made some modifications to remedy the situation.

Board is finally all done. Now I just need to wait for the patio to get finished.  Sounds like next week the painting and roof will be done and the week after will be the rebar and concrete!

I made some matching "Rope-lined bar shelves" and used a spar urethane to seal them, since they will be mostly used for holding cool decorations you would find at a bar.  The Bar-Top will be epoxied since it will most likely be under some heavy use and I can't imagine the urethane will hold up to that traffic.  LOL

I got the news about my boat yesterday followed by some other news that will make the next few months harder to navigate, so decided to finally pour the epoxy bar-top.   I watched some vids and read the instructions, so felt pretty ready to start the mixing even though I had some obstacles to navigate.  I was certain I could get through them with minor problems, and I did, but it definitely didn't go as smoothly as I was hoping.

I was there using the heat gun to get the bubbles out, but they kept forming.  It was a rough hour standing there and tending to the table top when I ran in to go to the bathroom.  I had to check some work email and came out to see it tacky with a few areas having a lot of bubbles and rough patches that weren't there 20 minutes ago!  Ugh, nothing to do now, but let it harden.  It's not terrible, but not what I was hoping.  The wood was so dry, that it kept soaking in micro cracks and forming small bubbles up until the point it tacked up.  I guess this crystal clear epoxy has a much slower curing process than I even realized it would be.  Even 4 hours later, it was sticky and tacky, but this morning, it is hard and looks beautiful!  Morning Wood!   LOL

Thanksgiving was awesome at the new "Bar and Grill"
I played a bit of darts and it was as fun as I remembered!

Big issue was the bar stools.  We ordered a set and the dark walnut seat parts never came in.  they sent us another set and they showed up.... minus the wooden seats.
I went to Lowe's and picked up a big piece of Red Wood and went to work trying to get the seats done in time for Thanksgiving.

After cutting and a good sand, I think I may have it.  the original wood was supposed to be 3/4", but my fat ass didn't trust 3/4", so I got 1.5" thick wood.  Looked solid, so it was off to stain and sealing.

No room for siestas.  It's pretty much done though.  I just need to put some sun shades on some of the areas, as the sun is brutal sitting at the bar at certain times.  hahaha
