I went through all of the specialty sharks the member's have caught since I first created the website back in April 2014. I am not counting Bat Rays or Leopard Sharks, but the cooler, bigger and more obscure sharks from our surf. This is just to track the sharks we have caught as well as some data to help us clue in on these Big Game surf critters.
I'll update the list as catches continue. I'll also anchor this post for easy viewing. All sharks listed are sharks posted to the P-Soul website.
All sharks are C.P.R'd (Catch, Photographed and Released unharmed)
Only sharks posted onto this community (forum) will be added to the list.

I'll go back and change that. I was trying to use any information provided in the posts and seeing if I saw claspers or not. I didn't see them in Ray's Pic, but I'm glad you let me know so I could correct that. I also pulled old tide charts and moon phase charts to get the correct info for those days that a shark was caught.
It took me some time to get it all together, but should be easier from here on out.
Squatch, I added baits since inevitably Donfish will get one using squid or sardine... or something. LOL Actually a few of those you caught were on bonito, so I need to change that also.

Oh that's right, the 1 got was a male, me and Adam had a conversation that night about the female 7gill he had just caught that had bite marks by its gills, like maybe the 1 I had caught and his were "partner's"

North SD county, July 21st 2012, 10:41pm right before peak high tide. Fresh perch. 69" . large 4ft+ surf when caught.

I remember those well Chris. I was just putting up the shark list since Prehistoric Soul's inception, so I left a bunch of sharks out. When I have time (like after my back surgery) I might include all of the sharks that we caught, but it is going to be quite the task. It was just easier to start the list when I started the website. :)
Cool, keep that up here as I think a more robust list would serve everyone better with the data. 8)

Funny you said that. I pulled up a google image of moon phases for March and went by that for the last few entries and just realized now that it was for 2014. Whoops! Thanks for pointing that out. We need accurate data for sure. 8)

I've gone and checked every moon phase and made the appropriate corrections. Also this list is updated as of now. I hate to spoil Dave and Rammer's report, but it will be worth reading for sure!

- 5/24 - My 7-Gill was caught on Big Eye Scad, not mackerel
- 1/19 - There wasn't a 3-horse race. Who were the other two members as Ray told me he wasn't a part of that one. ;D (eel, huh?)

OK, the new list is up and I also added the Angel Shark from Surffishingsean as that is indeed a rare shark catch from the surf! B_Litz and Ztesta have also been added!

Angel shark is certainly a specialty shark and deserving of its place on the roster.

I've thrown store bought Cuda for leos and bats, I can see it working great for 7gills and soups....just haven't bought any, I believe for around $7 you can buy a 5 pound Cuda last I checked

Hit the pier and catch some fresh mackerel, nothing beats that! Tried fishing 2 rods with different baits, but it's too much work going back and forth.

I can only buy bait this week there isn't time to fish for it.

I would be careful using fish with a size limit for bait. Once you start cutting it up there is no way to prove it was a legal size fish. I seem to remember a reg about fish in a condition that is unable to be measured. I'll see if I can find it.
Hmmm. Only thing I found was about bringing filleted fish from boats. I still think it's sketchy, but I've been wrong before.

Surf was .5-1 ft
Moon was waning (i think) nov 7th, it wasn't visible at anytime that night
It was outgoing tide, although barely (pretty much still flood)

I'll change the surf height, but I get the moon phases off the moon charts for SoCal so I know that's right on plus or minus a day of the phase.
Congrats again boss! I wanted to put the pic on the front page of the website, but it's just too blurry to do so. I might figure out something still.

Giovanna also told me she caught another one of yours, but I haven't found that post to confirm. She is a fisherwoman for sure so that was her 7 last night. That puts you in third! :o ;D

My first batch of 7s I caught were in September and October. They seem to be around year round up here.
My best time to catch them previously to the past 2 years was in September. The last 2 years however, they have not been in their usual haunts. Good observation.

I updated the list again and may I say that it is growing! That's some serious sharking going on as the records will attest to.
BTW, I am looking into a grant through a non-profit group to see if we could get a tagging program going for surf based sharks off of California's Coast. This group consists of many members from the SD Zoological Society who usually work on species reintroductions, but are very interested in my initial pitch for a tagging program for them. I'm meeting with the president in a few weeks to discuss options and then hopefully initiate the steps required to get this off the ground. 8)

That is cool, see if they can send some tags this way! I got in touch with Monterey Bay Aquarium a few years back and they were inquiring if I could tag Shovels and Leos. I was super stoked but then they said $150 for tag guns and $80 dollars for tag refills. I then declined assuming since I was helping them with research without any compensation that the tag supplies would be supplied for free. Hope you can strike a deal Tom!

New photoshop is working, but a lot more complicated than the older version. Big differences from CS2 to CS6.

I got two Sevens from Fish Jerk to add. I missed them while updating the list.

The list is updated. I also found an error that I corrected on the list saying Pinoyfisher caught a shark in 2017, but have it back to 2015 on the mother list.
Just some numbers to throw around your noggin when you read this.
2014 - Only 9 sharks since May (the Inception of Prehistoric Soul)
2015 - 50 sharks on the beach, caught and released.
2016 - 73 sharks on the sand and we only hit the half way mark!!! WoW!

Have you tried putting the list on a google doc. and linking it to this post? Make it view only or comment only, that way you can get correct info. from the anglers.

I need to update the list as two more need to be added. I'm also going to chop the pictures down to year so we can compare which seasons are the best and actually see the list since it won't be one super long list with little letters.
I'm also going to graph out some of the data so we could see any trends. I'll hopefully get it done this week, but someone catch another already as I'd like to update more than two at one shot! lol ;D

BTW, I am looking into a grant through a non-profit group to see if we could get a tagging program going for surf based sharks off of California's Coast. This group consists of many members from the SD Zoological Society who usually work on species reintroductions, but are very interested in my initial pitch for a tagging program for them. I'm meeting with the president in a few weeks to discuss options and then hopefully initiate the steps required to get this off the ground. 8)

That is a new one. I would expect the asterisk to be on the length to indicate an estimate. I have been threatened with as many as 5 asterisks for random perceived transgressions.

I was trying to count on my little phone and that's what I got on a scan. If I missed something, it might have been a missed entry on my part or a missed community post. I'll fix any issues that I missed as I said before, but I need to know when it happens. When people post their sharks, please indicate all known info. I've actually fished a bunch, just no luck. I dumped a soup 30 seconds into the fight and lost another in knee deep water. Got a good look at it as it lazily swam away. F'ing hook pulled. Other than that, just dealt with rough surf and confused currents.

If the weather and sand conditions improve, I’m planning on adding to my total this year. Decided to give a coffee grinder a go again this year. Picked up a spinfisher v 8500ll on clearance from penn for 1/2 price, threw 450yds of 65 braid on it and it’s ready to go.

How do you cut the bats up to put on the hook? Rectangle? Square? Diamond cut with hook at pointy end? I think a bait rigging article might serve people well on here trying new baits or even hooking them differently.

I like it for 2 reasons: 1, because it stays on the hook so well, and you can use a single steak until it gets bit, you break it off, or you're done fishing. It can soak much, much longer than a mackerel and stays on the hook better. And 2, it weeds out a lot of other species, so when you hook up you know it's not a shovel or a bat ray, however judging by the current data it's only catching 7s and whites, may or may not weed out soups but we'll see.
For a while, I was cutting the wing into strips, parallel with the spine. Essentially as big as you can cast, so maybe cutting the cuts closest to the shoulder in half since they're longer and thicker than the wing tip.
However, the last ray I harvested, I just cut and saved each wing whole, which gave me more time to contemplate a good cut and maybe cut as much from the wing as I need for an upcoming trip. My last trip, I made a cut from wing tip toward the body, making for a piece that's 10" long and 1" wide or so. That way, it has a long profile which may get more attention from the opportunistic 7. Still too early to tell if that's the key, but I think it's a good idea, since the wing tip isn't substantial as a cut on its own.
The rays I've been harvesting have been about 18-24" in wingspan. It seems like the right size where I don't have to harvest too many small ones or handle the waste of a large ray. That one slot bat ray's meat could last a dozen trips or more, at least for a single person who is using cast-able pieces. I caught 34 small/medium size mackerel the other night and I imagine it may only take 4-6 trips to run through that.
Maybe next bat ray I harvest I'll do a pictorial, but it'll be a few months.

So does Spencer yak out baits? That prickly is pretty damn cool and definitely a huge specimen! He catches so many unique sharks from shore, but surely isn't surfcasting? If he is he must have a hell of an arm and a killer spot ;D!

Definitely yakked! It doesn't take away from his accomplishments, it just opens things up. If I had the balls to do that at night, I'd do it as well.

In the meantime, if you even get out to try, please put something down at least in the Fishing Talk section as a conditions report to help other anglers know what beaches to maybe scratch if they are going out.

Not sure if the bay sharks count but Donovan’s female leopard (56”, estimate 60” total if it had the tail” and 32-34” brown smoothie were caught between 9 and midnight during the bar fight in north county SD. Both on Mack’s.
