: Current Surf and Salad Conditions Reports
: Latimeria September 18, 2018, 06:12:34 AM
This is just a trial Sticky Topic.  I know a lot of you still get around the water even if you are not fishing, or didn't catch anything so you don't want to report it.
My idea for this is to just give a brief quick synopsis at least and a general area (unless you want to be more specific).  I think this might help people decide if and even where to go.

Examples:

-Mission Beach - Surf size was fishable, but there was a ton of salad in the water and on the beach.

-Cardiff - Clean water and no kelp, but the realistic wave heights are much bigger than forecasted.  Big shore pound.

-Torrey Pines - Stay away... Giant kelp monsters floating in the surf zone everywhere.

This way we network with surf condition reports (and we have all thanked someone who has braved the surf and let people know how good or bad it's been out there to help make up our minds).
I'll just see how this goes and hopefully it catches on.

If Jim replies here, you know it's going to be: "The county must have dumped all of the kelp in San Diego off the beach I was fishing.  Solid Kelp in front of me, but the guys 20 yards to the south are not getting any salad.... I think they are sabotaging me!"

Crumbly surf. 2-3', occasional 4'. Lots of surface texture. LOTS of broken up salad. Every cast had salad. Stay home, don't waste your bait.

Thanks Mike.  It looks like things are going to get ugly again this upcoming weekend.

Bigger surf tonight.  We're skipping the surf and trying something a little different instead.  I can only imagine the surf is mucky with the big surf anywhere.

That was initially my plan, but Sasquatch laid an egg on that idea.

I guess we'll dropping nets for bugs then. I could use some bugs.

That might be part of the plan, but I'm not taking the boat out.  That and also I have a super secret east coast lure that I plan on trying to see if it is as effective out here.

STAY AWAY from Ocean Beach!  I've never seen so much salad!  Surf and shore break was HUGE!  Dirty water everywhere.  Terrible.

Conditions have been absolutely stellar as of late!! I've done 3 trips to 3 different beaches and pleasantly surprised with flat surf and no salad. All 3 beaches also still had a fair amount of sand left to bury a sand spike. The only problem was nothing was biting. Supposed to start raining here by Thursday through the weekend.

If conditions are fishable, I might be on the sand.

Thanks for the pics Steve.  I'm skipping the fishing today and just trying to get things done around the house.  This way there is more time to fish when the conditions improve.

What area is the last 2 pictures, I've never seen a walkway that close to the beach other than Mission. They allow bikes there?

Downtown Cbad. Not sure about bikes.

Solana Beach Area: March 12th, 2019

Small clumps of weeds around.  Surf manageable, but sets on the bigger side.  Lots of whitewater after the surf pound.

March 15... big grass monsters sitting on the floor by Swamis... conditions were great otherwise  8)

Water has cleared up considerably and the surf is mellowing out too in the North County areas. Looks like good days ahead to soak some baits 8)

Thanks for the updates!  Time to cruise up to the PSSK!

I swear we have had the most terrible surf conditions lately (Hard wind putting big arcs in the mono, elevated surf, sea grass).  Hmmm, it's probably just because I'm getting old and over the years taught me what was enjoyable surf fishing vs not so enjoyable. Yep, the more I think about it, I'm just getting soft.  LOL

Well, hopefully some people are getting out.  I've only been fishing once in the past month due to home construction and other things, but plan on being back sooner than later.

Conditions were much better than what was forecasted. Only issue was occasional grass and kelp monsters.  TNGC area.

Looks like weather, high winds and big surf is going to keep things slow for a bit down here.  Not sure of the salad situation.  Anyone in SD even try fishing in the last few days to give a salad/conditions report?

I fished Sunday night. Crappy conditions. 3-6' with it mostly on the big side. Current wasn't bad, but the salad was really bad. Line would be sideways within a few seconds of hitting the water. Luckily it was mostly broken up surf grass and boa kelp and not giant kelp paddies that can claim your rigs. Didn't see any grunion either. Fished for an hour and had enough.

I’m staying in San Onofre and this grass patch won’t leave. The little cove is sheltered enough and deep enough it’s holding fish (perch and croaker) but I can hardly soak a bait for them long enough to bite and shark rigs won’t hold bottom because the Sputnik’s catch all the grass before the bottom.

Oceanside and Carlsbad have big waves and dirty water, didnt even give it a second look.

Jeez, that sounds terrible.  Things are supposed to calm down here as surf goes, so hopefully things clean up quickly.  This is prime time for 7-gills and mother nature is not making it easy for us this year!

There was a lot of promise for this shark season, but the weather and wind has been awful more than good this year.

Surf was still up this morning when I left but the water looked clear. Let’s hope for the best

BIG surf predicted for the next few days  :'(
: Re: Current Surf and Salad Conditions Reports

Cardiff - First week of April

RIPPING CURRENT at SLACK TIDE!  7 oz sputniks couldn't even hold the bottom.

GRASS GALORE! Water looked fairly clean, but there was a hidden mess of grass and kelp in the water that would have been fine if the ripping current didn't pile it up on our line at breakneck speeds!

We fished for about 4 hours and never got a single shot at a 10 minute soak time..  not a single bite...  nothing except a thong bikini sunning herself next to us that sort of salvaged basically a wasted trip.

Phuck! That sounds awful! Mother Nature is doing her best to keep us off the beach. I'm gonna hit the bay this Thursday for bats and grinners or the pier for bait stock piling.

4/22

Report from the beach...  "It's so windy that it looks like flocks of sheep out there".  Confused, I said sheep?  Squatch replied "all the whitecaps this morning"..

It's my anniversary "weekend" apparently and I have a big work audit to prep for this week, so I'm not sure when I'll get out fishing again.
: Re: Current Surf and Salad Conditions Reports

I was a TP last night, the downhill current was the worse I've ever seen.

The wife is preparing for the same audit. I wish the conditions were better, it'd be nice to get away from the stress of "audit preparation".
