: Is there any good way of landing and releasing a shark from the pier?
: BackBayMan October 23, 2017, 07:53:01 AM
I've been researching the Florida and Texas guys, and it seems like they fish piers during the winter when the surf is too big to get a bait out safely from shore. To land a fish, it looks like they use a pier gaff to get control of the fish so they can get a tail rope on it and then use both to pull them up over the rail.

It looks pretty gruesome :(

If I was going to keep the fish, I'd stick them like a boss. But I'm not going to keep the fish...

Which begs a question I think I know the answer to, but I'll ask the group just in case I'm missing something.

Is there any good way of landing and releasing a shark from the pier?

I've see some type of sling/net device, but can't remember where.  I've also seen people use a large crab net.
Can't imagine that either would work on anything over 6' though.

Florida guys use a head rope of fish up to 8ft and walk them to the sand if their bigger. Texans use big ass nets, 4,5 and 6ft diameter or walk it to the beach. Most, if not all, Socal piers have shops and bathrooms blocking the rail so walking them down isn't plausible. I haven't used the big gear off piers here for that reason but a big 7 will come over the rail with a head rope and hoop net under it.

That's what I thought.

I'm not being judgmental, but for me personally I just don't see a good way of catching and releasing a good sized shark or ray from the pier so I'm not going to mess with it.

Anybody wanna paddle some plate sized rays a couple hundred yards offshore?

At night?

I'll supply the rays and beer ;D

Kayaks are ideal. You can really jam on those things and 100 yards ain't sh!t 8)

We need to find somewhere  that does overnight kayak rentals. If we all pitch in a few bucks it won't cost sh!t.
