Salt Water Shore Fishing Reports / Joined the club
« on: May 21, 2023, 12:21:25 PM »

With the situation with my father, I haven't been shark fishing in a  few years.  Talked Tony into joining me this morning, glad we went.  Armed with intel from someone else, we fished a beach I've never been to before.  Tony got bit three times and I got bit twice, but only one stuck.  We couldn't get him to straighten out for a measurement, so Tony snaked the tape up the fish.  He came up with a tad over 100", and judging by the fight I don't doubt it.

We weren't set up more than 15 minutes and Tony's rod did the 'bounce'.  This is what came in

Quick measure and pictures then he went back in he went, swan away strong

Incoming tide on mackerel.  Don't know sh!t about moon phases   ;D

Tony and myself are gonna soak bait for toothy critters this morning, first time in over 3 years I've shark fished.  Went through my gear last night, sharpened hooks and tied a new shock leader.  Wish us luck   :D

Salt Water Shore Fishing Reports / Successful trip with my dad
« on: April 29, 2023, 08:34:00 AM »
Had a good day with my father at the pier yesterday.  We missed half a dozen solid pull downs, but managed to stick a few.  We ended up with 5 calicos up to 17", a hand full of small rockfish and a 20" halibut.  The highlight of the morning was my dad yelling "I'm hooked up".  His rod was buckled and the spool was spinning, at first I thought it was a bat.  After coaching him on 'raise up and reel down' he finally got it to the base of the pier.  Turned out to be a leopard, guessing it was around 4 1/2 foot.  We broke it off and sent it on it's way, everything was released.  He was stoked and I was happy for him. Not sure how much longer he will be able to do this, he will be 98 in a few months.  Until then, Life is good

Salt Water Shore Fishing Reports / Another trip with my dad

The reason for no reports ain't because I haven't been taking him twice a week, we just haven't caught any fish.  Today was much better, he caught 7 and I caught one.  There were perch, a small calico, one sargo, some kind of rock fish and this cabazon.  All in all a pretty good day, hopefully spring is coming sooner than later.  As always, fish were released

After being married for 37 years the first time, I never dreamed I would try it again.  Even though the official ceremony will be on the beach next month, we got married at the court house in Ventura yesterday.  Today after we go fishing I'll call PERS to get her on my health, dental and vision insurance.  My youngest daughter is a "Hippie Minister" and will officiate it next month  ;)

Salt Water Shore Fishing Reports / Nice to get out alone
« on: December 12, 2022, 04:00:23 PM »
Been almost 3 weeks since I've had a chance to fish alone (or even be alone), that in and of itself was good for me.  It was a morning of ups and downs, only had about 90 minutes to fish this stretch before the tide pushed me out.  Missed one take and hung two, BUT I ALSO LOST A MONSTER.  Hit close in and just bull dogged me a few seconds then took off on a 20 foot or so run.  Got it into about 12" of water and it started thrashing and came off.  It broke the rear hook on my LC, I have no doubt it would have put me in that all elusive 30"+ club. As always, fish were released

Salt Water Shore Fishing Reports / Another trip with my dad

Seeing how there ain't many reports, I figured I'd share this mornings session.  I stick with frozen anchovies, always hoping to join the 30" plus club.  My dad uses either bloodworms or lugworms, he just wants to get bites.  He hung this 16 1/2" Sargo this morning, it's the biggest I've seen.  Have a blessed Thanksgiving, respect from my dad and myself

Salt Water Shore Fishing Reports / On the pier with pops
« on: September 18, 2022, 04:32:21 AM »
Figured I would post another report with my father off the pier.  I take him either 2 or 3 times a week, it's relaxing for me and he loves it.  We ended up with 7 calicos, 2 short halibut, 1 WSB and the biggest shovelnose I've ever seen (all fish released).  Also, he turned 97 a couple weeks ago.  He spent 32 years with LAFD and has been retired 43 years.  I make arrangements with a retired Chief to have the local station come by and sing him Happy Birthday, it makes his day.  You can tell by his smile, kinda looks like he snorted one line too many   ;D

Well, this morning was not my dad's day. This picture is him looking into the water where his rod moments before flew over the rail and did the "Submarine". He told Theresa  "It's not so bad, it was my son's rod".  You gotta love his attitude

Salt Water Shore Fishing Reports / Short story
« on: June 30, 2022, 04:03:24 PM »
No fish porn, just a short story.  The other day we went to the pier as usual, when we arrived there was a father son team already fishing.  The kid was maybe 10 years old and fishing with a 3 foot $9.99 Walmart special, but he was fishing.  A little later I saw my father fighting what appeared to be a big hunk of kelp, so I went over to assist him.  I started hand lining for him while he reeled.  Just before it surfaced, I saw a rod and reel attached to his line.  It was a 7’ Daiwa rod with a fairly high end Daiwa reel on it, plus a full spool of braid.  It must have gone in the evening before because it looked perfect and reeled smooth.  Then I thought about the kids combo and asked his father would he like this for his son.  The father was really grateful and the kid was ecstatic.  I explained to his dad they needed to take the reel to a shop and have it serviced.  The kid was strutting around like a Banti Rooster with his new setup, cannot remember the last time I felt so warm and bubbly inside.  Life is good

Salt Water Shore Fishing Reports / What a morning!!!

I normally don't share pier reports with my father twice in a week, but today was one for the books.  We caught somewhere around 20 calicos, with the smallest being around 13".  At least 6 or 7 of them where over 18".  I didn't take time to measure the largest, but I'm positive it went close to 24".  I couldn't believe my eyes, and we lost as many as we caught.  It was one of those days that 'dreams are made of'.  All fish safely released.........

Salt Water Shore Fishing Reports / Checkers from the pier
« on: June 08, 2022, 01:36:08 PM »
Another report from me and my dad.  We caught a few other fish, but these two were the standouts.  The larger of the two went a hair short of 19", the other a solid 18".  The water temperature is starting to warm up my friends.  As always, fish were retuned to the water healthy and happy.......good ol circle hooks  8)

Salt Water Shore Fishing Reports / On the pier with my father again
« on: March 22, 2022, 07:44:54 AM »
Another report from the pier with my father. He caught his first respectable halibut, he was super excited. With some coaching, he walked to the end of the pier where I went down for a quick measurement and release. When I came back up and told him it was 2 foot long, he said we should have brought it home. I told him it was shy of the legal size limit 😉
