I have some theraband gold latex that i should try . It makes great slingshot bands too , lol
Stretching the rubber so it snaps out of the way when you release thumb pressure looks like a good tip.

For me the worst part of making spudniks is drilling the holes for the grip wires.
I was too cheap to buy a spudnik mold, so i made my own out of Bondo. It won’t last forever but has popped out a suprising number of Spudniks.

A quick search online had some interesting tips to help figure it out- pouring flour in the holes and checking for foot prints etc
