Salt Water Shore Fishing Reports / 2/7/18 VC
« on: February 08, 2018, 09:33:20 AM »
Sorry for the brief report, but I've got a lot going on right now.
Had a small window to fish with my dad last night so we made the most of it.
Great conditions other than the low tide.  Lots of critters out.  One big knock down that gave my dad a new PB leopard.
57" male on a mac chunk.

One funny thing is before sunset, my rod got slammed and my adreneline started pumping as I ran to the rod.
Turned out to be a big sand piper flew into my line and got it wrapped around it's wing.
Gently pulled it in and got it untangle and it flew off fine  :o

Reel Repair & Maintenance / Logan's first reel build Penn 180
« on: January 27, 2018, 07:34:47 PM »
From my poll post of what to build next, the 180 was the big winner. Since my son Logan has already started taking it apart, I decided to have him put it back together. So here's his first build thread.
He started by completely disassembling it all by himself.

After the parts soaked in Simple Green for a few days I had him scrubbing and rinsing them really good.

Got to track down a few parts before assembly, but he's pretty excited! ;D

General Board / Ready to meet her!
« on: January 09, 2018, 12:49:56 PM »
Out second daughter (sixth kid) is probably going to arrive next week.  So excited to meet her!
If I'm MIA for a bit, that is why.
Probably won't get much fishing in over the next few weeks, but hopefully I'll be back in time for Sevengill season up here.
I'll post some pics when I get a chance.  I'd appreciate your prayers for a safe delivery.

Classifieds / *SOLD*Penn Mag Power 980 WITH original box and accessories
« on: December 04, 2017, 03:33:50 PM »
I picked this beauty up awhile back, wanting to collect them.
I've realized that I don't have the space to be much of a collector right now  ;D
This one is in too nice of shape for me to fish it so I thought I'd offer it up to you guys here before I post it anywhere else.
This 980 is in great condition and comes with the original box, cloth bag, literature, Penn oil, and tool.
Make me some offers, I want it to go to a good home.

Reel Repair & Maintenance / My Critter Gitter
« on: November 30, 2017, 02:21:38 PM »
After 6 skunkings in a row fishing 2 long rods each time, I've decided to put together a critter rod to try and get some kind of action while the big bait is soaking.  I already had a vintage 9' Fenwick that I picked up at a yard sale for $20 and I just found this little Penn Beachmaster 155 for $15 on Craigslist.

My plan is to build out this little reel to be bullet proof for critters, but still handle a medium size bat if it happens.  I'm adding an aluminum spool, custom adjustable mag, Carbontex drag stack, stainless sleeve, power handle and knob, upgraded stainless screws, and stiffening the frame with a Newell base and custom spacer bar braces that I 3D printed.

Here's what it looks like before disassembly.

I'll add to this post as I get the parts and begin the build.

Fishing Accessories / Looking into waders
« on: November 22, 2017, 09:28:44 AM »
I've been pretty cold the last couple sessions.  I usually just wear my board shorts and surf booties so I can wade out to cast.  The board shorts dry pretty quick, but I've still been pretty cold as the night gets later.

What do you guys use as far as waders go?
Price range?  I know you get what you pay for, but on a tight budget, are there any quality ones for a good price?
What do you wear under them? (no going commando)  I'd be fine with a really thin material if it's waterproof enough to wear sweats under it.

Other ideas?

Thanks!

Tackle Talk / Best line for casting convetionals?
« on: November 07, 2017, 02:20:57 PM »
So I'm slowly making the transition to conventionals.
The last 2 sessions I've been fishing my main spinner rod, and the same rod (Penn Prevail 12' heavy) in conventional form with a Penn Mag Power 990 reel.  I'm really like both!  I just picked up a Daiwa Sealine-X 50HV from ebay for $22  :o and I'm looking to add another Prevail to the stable to mount it on (bday is coming up this weekend).
I'm going to rebuild the Sealine and add an adjustable mag kit that I've been working on.  But I need to know what to spool it with!

The plan is a few hundred yards of 80# braid, but I'm not sure after that.
Fill it with braid and just use a rub leader? (I had a bad experience with this on my spinner when I started)
Add 100 yards or so top shot of 40# Big Game mono like on my spinner?
What brand/size?
What do you guys think casts the best on conventionals and resists backlash?

Salt Water Shore Fishing Reports / Slow going up here 11/1/17
« on: November 03, 2017, 09:46:15 AM »
Been awhile since I've been on the sand and needed to scratch the itch.
Dad and I met at the new spot we've been trying, but a test cast revealed lots of salad climbing the line within a minute.
Made a move and set up at a different spot with stellar conditions.  Not much current, surf, or weeds.
We soaked macs for 2.5 hours without a nibble.  There was something out there stealing the bait, but not big enough to wiggle the rods.
finally as we're packing it up, my spinner setup doubles over and line starts peeling off as a surf bat makes a long run out to sea.
Fought it for about 10 minutes before my dad pulled the 40 incher up on the sand.

Still can't find the grinners, but it was great to pull on something heavy again!
