Salt Water Shore Fishing Reports / First Shark of the New Year 1/2/17
« on: January 02, 2017, 08:16:03 PM »
Needed to put some more time on my license after yesterday's dismal morning at the lake.

Surf report looked good, even if the tide wasn't my favorite.

Showed up about sunset, set up and waited. Conditions were great, except some mildly annoying purple salad.

Burned through several baits and started thinking about heading out soon.

Then I got a slow bend followed by a screaming run. Grabbed the rod and held on, waiting for the fish to tell me what it was. Unfortunately it told me it was a bat, but I'm not too choosy at this point so I settled in to enjoy the fight.

Several minutes passed and I started to feel my line pass over the reef. I moved down the beach trying to get free, but to no avail. My line parted and the bat was gone.

I reeled in so much shredded line, I didn't feel confident in what I had left so I called it a night. Good thing I took a nice sunset pic.

First Shark of the New Year is still out there. Who will be the one to get it?

I get out every year on the first. Got to get my cost per use down on my license.

Got a cold and I feel like crap or I would have been out today. Hope I feel decent in the morning.

Fishing Talk / What do you Bring?
« on: December 19, 2016, 06:09:28 PM »
Headed down for a night session. What do you bring?

Here is my list, off the top of my head.

Rod, reel, rod holder.
Small cooler bag with bait. 4-10 mackerel depending on size, or other exotic baits if I have some.
2 22-25 oz beers. Prefer cans.
Duffel bag with extra warm gear. Light flannel, heavy flannel, hoodie, jacket, beanie. As needed based on weather.
3-5 light sticks.
Head lamp, plus extra batteries if I think about it. Usually not.
3 6oz sputniks.
3-5 extra rigs
Spool of 80lb mono for leaders
Chair

Think that's about it. I have some miscellaneous sinkers and hooks that seem to follow me wherever I go as well, but I don't count them.

Waders and boots in the winter, shorts if it is warm.

I feel like I travel pretty light, but have what I need. Most of it has to make the round trip, so I try to keep it down to a minimum.

Freshwater Shore Fishing Reports / Dixon 12/10/16

Skunk streak continues at Dixon. Got one and lost another 3 weeks ago, but nothing since then. Wohlford is getting stocked today so probably hit it tomorrow. Probably be a zoo.

Hmmm. Just checked the website and it says stocked last wednesday. Still a zoo, but maybe the fish will want to eat.

Interesting article I got from a link on another site. Things could get rough for the fleet. We'll have to see what happens I guess.

Salt Water Shore Fishing Reports / Solo Tuesday 11/15/16
« on: November 15, 2016, 08:42:18 PM »
Stopped to check out a few spots on the minus tide. Good to eyeball the lay of the land once in awhile.

Grabbed a bite and headed to a spot I am trying to gain some insight on.

Great conditions. Weeds were almost completely lacking. Fish certainly were.

Called it early. Guess it is more of a high tide spot.

General Board / Sad Day

It's our favorite bartender's last day. Heading down to happy hour early since we expect a big crowd.

On the other hand, I could save a bunch of money on tips if the new guy is a stranger. At least until we get to know him.

Salt Water Shore Fishing Reports / Morning Session 9/4/16
« on: September 04, 2016, 11:54:45 AM »
Been itching to hit a spot I have hammered the leppos at in the past. Took a shot this morning.

Plenty of chopped salad, manageable with the small surf.

Not a single bait even chewed just a little on the corner.

Be somewhere else tonight hoping for better results.

Salt Water Shore Fishing Reports / Epic Fail 7/30/16
« on: July 30, 2016, 10:28:32 AM »
Set out this morning to do some light tackle surf fishing.

Jumped in the truck with spotfin in mind. No destination planned, just went where my truck took me.

Got to the beach at first light, grabbed some crabs and started walking and looking. Found a few likely spots and threw crabs at them for no love.

Finally I settled on one little hole that looked promising. Got a couple taps, the rod loaded up but nobody was home when I reeled in. Still it was a good sign and I stuck it out.

Not long after I scored a small, real small, corbina. Cool, the hole is holding fish and getting better as the tide comes in.

I kept scanning the skinny water as I fished and spotted three backs out of the water. Cast to where I thought they might go and got lucky. Decent 16 inch corbina.

Spent the next couple hours at that hole until the grass ran me off.

By that time I had 9 corbina, and a medium perch. The corbina had some size to them, just not a big size.

Watched an osprey swoop down from the cliff and just miss some fish I could see in the wave. Later a peregrine chased him off.

Scored a tenth corbina walking back to the truck to hit double digits.

Failed to even see a spotfin.

Saltwater Boat Fishing Reports / 3/4 Day to the Islands 7/28/16
« on: July 29, 2016, 09:01:34 AM »
Took a couple days off to enjoy myself. Booked a trip on the Liberty out of Fisherman's Landing. Counts dropped from 2.5 fish per stick to basically 1 per rod, so I knew it might be rough, but my usual rides are unreliable lately.

Got to the landing, scored a premium spot right near the dock. Great for carrying all the fish I was going to catch.

Checked in and got on the boat. I was impressed. It was clean, like hospital clean, lots of room on the stern, down the rail and in the bow. I could stand in the galley until the sloping roof got too low.

The heads were nicer than some hotel rooms I have been in. With showers. Bunks were available for $5, but I didn't check them out.

Picked up some smallish sardines for bait and headed out. Got a little treat and saw FLIP being towed into the harbor. Cool research ship that floods one end and stands vertical in the water. A family friend helped design or build it. Been awhile, not sure which.

Great day on the water as we approached the islands.

Started at Pukey Point, got a couple bonita. Moved down the east side looking and did a couple short drifts for no action. Checked out the middle grounds, then south island. Anchored near the tuna pens and started to get some fish. Not huge, but 10-15lb fish. 1-2 rods going at a time, never busted wide open. I got a nice cuda that I popped off at the side of the boat. No point gaffing it, didn't want it.

Fished the hell out of it, but never got anything to go. Boat swing was 90 degrees so it was tough to get in a good position and stay out of tangles. 46 people on the boat. Not sure if the 4-5 dead heads were in that count.

Tried a rally beer,  but it didn't work.

Went to dropper loop and soon got a big hit. Took off for the hills and thats when I found out I needed to have done a better job setting the drag on my new lever drag. First one I've owned. Pushed it to sunset and still had not enough drag. Fish finally popped off without being ID'd. Adjusted my drag and kept on the dropper loop.

Scored some bottom fish for Vee, my adopted Auntie, that may earn me some fresh hot lumpia. Got a couple lings, they said were short. Never heard of size limits in Mexico, but whatever. A couple nice starries and a big treefish. I asked the deckhand why they call them treefish, but I think he was scared to tell me. That's OK, I already knew.

The bite died, we relocated and pulled a couple more fish, I got a nice calico.

After a bit we went looking. West side of south island, middle grounds, east side of north island, Pukey, middle grounds, but nothing much happened. Stayed an extra hour trying.

I did finally get my yellowtail. While sitting in the galley. Never even saw it until I put it in my cooler.

Overall, good experience. Happy with the crew, felt like the captain worked to get us fish, counts showed us second in YT among the 3/4 day boats. Relief cook on the boat for the first time made a mean burger. Been awhile since I bought boat food, bring your wallet.

I would ride the boat again.

I had my shot, but missed.

Salt Water Shore Fishing Reports / O'side Pier 7/23/16
« on: July 23, 2016, 09:11:25 AM »
Wife and kids out of town for a couple weeks. Hit the pier this morning to make some bait. Pretty slow for me. Would have done better if I was more serious.

There were some nice mackerel around but all I got were the 6 inch models.

One was snatched up by a small yellowtail on the way in. Took me straight to the pilings and wrapped my sabiki in the mussels. Nothing to do but break it off. Ugh.

Still, it was fun to hook one.

135
Arrived 445 and had 3 small spanish mack by 5. That was it until I split at 8. Big surf has the water churned up and dirty even at the end of the pier. Croaker guys just outside the surfline were getting a few. Random lady said she was at the pier til 11 last night and no mack then either.

Used a sabiki tipped with squid.
