If I were to target bait stealers at night...
« on: February 17, 2022, 08:42:15 PM »
Trying my darndest to crack the code...

Kid switched clubs and now practices near a different set of beaches later in the evening. I get about a 45 minute window to wet a line. I've now spent the last 3 weeks skunking in the dark... a new personal best. Tried reefs, jetties, sandy beaches, and lagoons. Tossed the usual artificials but can't get a sniff. I know there's fish here because I've had recent success on the same sand during dawn patrol hours.

You guys tossing lures at night between "plinks" with success? Or do I need to give in and soak bait? Would like to tug on something before time change brings out the crowds and makes parking a chore.

I haven’t thrown artificials at night on the beach, though I’m gonna start targeting stripers at night doing just that. I wouldn’t bother unless I had a a good clue that calicos, seabass, or stripers were around.

It's weird, I'll show up before graylight and the bass and buts can be on the chew. Then at the sunset golden hour I get nibbled to death by perch. But right after twilight it's like where's everyone at?

I've caught halibut on chunk bait at night, but haven't thrown lures.  Come to think of it, most of my best evening bass fishing in the surf was also on bait...
You can't catch them from your computer chair.

Stick to bait unless you're fishing during a grunion run.

Guess I'll try bait.

Hit up the general area this morning. Plucked a halibut right out of it's hole on the plastic teaser at the crack of graylight. Enjoyed the salad free conditions before the wind and rain screw it all up.

I’ve thrown 1/2oz crocs and white swimbaits at night and caught spotfin and Corbina on both. My favorite is a dropper loop on 10lb with a 1oz torpedo and sand crab. Toss it out past the first breaker and usually there’s croaker
Keep it tight
