4 Halibuts AM Session In North County 5//20/15
« on: May 20, 2015, 06:38:04 PM »
Had a free hour before I had to go to work, so I headed out to the sand. Conditions were just amazing! No wind, no salad, tons of bait fish and the waves were pretty calm. Armed with the LC 110 Aurora Mackerel on the Sahara 4000 Fe and 7ft  Daiwa Coastal with 12 lb P-line x-Strong.

The current was to bad either, so I just started fan casting with a slow and stop twitch retrieve. About ten minutes in I get my first hit. I could tell right away that it wasn't a big dog but was happy to get the acquired target. She came up top water and was splashing around. I forgot to mention this time out I changed out the stock LC hooks with Gamakatsu size six trebles. walked her back in pretty easily and got a quick picture and it was back to casting.

Hali #1   Didn't even measure this one.

This time about five minutes later in a different zone I get another hit, not to strong but it was fish on again. quick pic and back to it.

Another ten minutes later I get a hit again on the slow and stop retrieve, felt a nice little thump and set the hook.

Hali #3  I really like the colors on this one.  Again the landing was pretty easy. quick couple of pictures and it was back at it as time was winding down.

Started praying to the fish gods that I could get a legal, but today wasn't meant to be. Time was running out on me.  Although this was the last Halibut and the biggest. This one hit it in water maybe a foot deep. There was bait fish all over the place. I guess they are in close waiting for the grunion too.

Measured out a little over 21 inches. That legal has gotta be around here some where. This one was a good fight and even pulled some drag on me. It was a great morning to fish!

Hell of a session, Joel!  Four of anything in an hour is a great day, let alone them all being butts!
You can't catch them from your computer chair.
