Solo sesh to check on conditions and see if the higher tides would draw in the grinners. On the sand by 3am.
It was cold and surf wasn’t pumping, but the water was rough and confused. Sent out some macks and the waiting game commenced. Had one rod rigged with a 3way and the other had a fish finder rig. The fish finder rig didn’t too well in the rough water. Came back tangled every time. Decided to retire that rod and focus on one. After nearly an hour of absolutely nothing, the reel screams and it’s game on! Sure has been a while!! Lots of zig zagging and a couple of breaches. Wasn’t a long fight, but it was bulldogging the entire time. At this point I’ve clearly ID’d it as soupie, but knew the real battle was getting it beached as there was a deep trough about 10yds out that was creating some serious shore break. I get it past the trough, but one of the few legit 5’ waves that was predicted rolls in and tosses the soupie. Main line breaks from the impact and the soupie gets sucked back into the trough and that was all she wrote.
Shoulda had my first grinner for 2018. Woulda been sweet to have a sand hand. This coulda been a much better report. Well, I got to tangle with one finally! Hoping it shows again this Thursday!! So tired..
