« on: May 21, 2015, 09:12:58 AM »
Sup guys, had a chance to sneak out and long rod...
I arrived to beautiful conditions,  I was so stoked cuz it looked like great sharkin weather...got some beers, fresh bait, unfortunately I only had 1 legit screamer that dropped as I got the rod...fished from 7 till 11pm, hopefully tonight will be more rewarding

Salt Water Shore Fishing Reports / More Ray's
« on: May 20, 2015, 07:47:52 AM »
Bin a couple weeks since I hit the surf, so decided enough is enough, gotta get out today.
Arrived to excellent conditions, and I was immediately excited at the potential.  No grass, or kelp to speak of, mellow surf,  no wind...
even got bit in the 1st 5 mins, by a mid size model bat, that the gf quickly subdued

After a few more subtle bites,  I go to rebate and as soon as I pick the rod, go figure it loads up and throws me off big time lol
She once again handles it, just hoping for a shark....but it wasn't ment to be

Still nice getting out,  but our beaches are being heavily invaded by the bat plague

Salt Water Shore Fishing Reports / Surf soak
« on: April 17, 2015, 10:51:53 PM »
After yesterdays big shark I just had to get out there again today, and what better timing then to have Jaws (joe)hit me up that him and Jwells(jimmy) where gonna soak the long rods as well...perfect!
Only not much was going on.
I arrived late, I wanna say about 8:30, while they got here a bit before sunset and Joe had landed a decent bat.
A repeat of yesterday? Nope, nothing really went on, Joe got 1 hit while I was there, and packed up around 9:45. And go figure at 10:15 or so I get a nice run, and right away I know for sure it's a bat...a nice 51" at that...took a bit longer without a sandhand...But got her going back out quick...still nice getting out and soaking the big stuff regardless. Hopefully next time a grinner rolls thru

Salt Water Shore Fishing Reports / 108.5" of prehistoric soul
« on: April 16, 2015, 11:19:57 PM »
Well, where to begin...got off work at 5, got home and got a message from Steve, asking if I'm still heading out and where...and after some haggling we decide to fish local.
As I'm arriving, it's 7, I see Steve roll up, for once I'm the 1 early to the spot, sorta...he has all his stuff set up and quickly gets a bait in the water, while I shoot the sh!t, he gets bit by a spunky mid sized bat...so far so good...that was quick so I'm hoping it'll be a great session.

Far from it for me so far. I'm going without any bites and Steve gets a nice little hit...did he miss it? Nope, got a nice size round stingray (is this a -1?)

I check my bait, nada, rebait with a mack tail and send her out.
And well, not much is going on, no kelp, nice manageable surf, sob its nice, just lacking action...just when I'm gettin bummed, I get a slow run going south if where we are situated...not much of a dramatic fight, I get it coming in, it then decides it's gonna continue cruising south of our spot. Ever determined to get his hands on the big ray we thought I had, Steve abandons his rod that's still soaking and makes his way down the beach, somewhere in the area of 150' yards. Meanwhile I can't gain line, I can only follow it...when I see it finally exposed and I hear Steve scream holy sh!t Ray!!! I'm just thinking this is no ray...I run up and see an absolute brute of a 7gill beached on Its back and Steve doing his best to keep it from getting dragged back from the waves...luckily there's some joggers who hold my rod, while I grab the tail and me and Steve gave it a mighty heave ho! The 7 was just simply to heavy and we may have dragged it 5 feet and it was simply to much...the hook removal and pics will have to be while getting splashed by waves...I remove the hook which was perfectly in the corner of the mouth..we snap some pics, get the measurement of 108.5", and make struggle of dragging him back, followed by watching him slowly, but with authority swim off.

At this point, I'm good, I wind in, sit down and hope Steve cam nail 1...and he does, with another round stingray! By this time we give it 1 more soak, and call it a night...

Salt Water Shore Fishing Reports / Last minute Mission bay soak
« on: April 15, 2015, 11:16:52 PM »
Seeing as I got a new reel that is badly in need of a drag puller...I opted to go the bay. But due to complications I couldn't get there till 9.
Luckily I got bit almost immediately after setting up...missed it.
Seen a very good number of boils that got the blood pumping, so rigged a spook...and the boils ceased.
Lot of people burning pallets and furniture to keep the area well lit. I even had a fire going, even had the gf come down to visit and had her makin smores...as we were packin up at 10:30, I get a good run on my torium...man it's got a Smooth drag and a real nice feel to it...easily handled a nice 50" bat...turned out to be a very nice quick session

Fished from 8ish till 11, conditions looked great...just horrible salad, lost 3 rigs in the skinny due to mounds of salad...just black water...moved 50 yards up the beach, clear water, got a 10 min soak...Then the water turned black. I at least got to try out my  new shimano torium 30....such a bad ass reel, really happy with it...Hopefully next session I get a drag peeler

« on: April 12, 2015, 08:16:21 PM »
Idk if many use it, but I recently picked some up and I'm wondering what knots do you all prefer? I'm gonna give it a shot this week using the hay wire, normally i prefer sevalon multi strand, but I'll give it a go. Any info greatly appreciated, thanks

Salt Water Shore Fishing Reports / Finally got my helping of Soup
« on: April 06, 2015, 11:08:19 PM »
After such a slow last couple weeks and heavy salad presence, I haven't bin all that tempted to hit the surf and deal with all excess baggage, so off bin going to the bay.
Well today with the temps and swell down coupled with fresh macks, I figured why not go for a surf soak.
Made the solo run just after sunset to very cold, and somewhat windy conditions, but hey no eel grass or kelp!
After maybe an hr I get a few taps, swing and a miss...this happened 3 more times, so I started doing the running man hookset and got a few short calico's.

Finally got a nice mack tail trimmed the fin off and launched it.
A few taps later I prep the drag for my running man hookset on some gentle taps, and as I run, swinging, something goes berserk on the surface...
Long story short it gave me a run for my money, now I understand why they are so sought after, my 1st grinner, 73" long female, and go figure this beach is always packed with joggers and beach goers, but not today...it's all good

Snapped a few picks, walked her down, and she took off like a champ

Salt Water Shore Fishing Reports / An after work Bay soak
« on: April 03, 2015, 07:25:44 AM »
Hit up mission bay to some sweet conditions and plenty of beer...Met up with Dave and Paul. 2 very cool dudes I'll probably be running into again.
As I got there they were getting distant small bites and occasional runs while I was setting up. Eventually the right kind sticks...and pops off, followed by a sh!t shark. By this time, I'm set up, and get a baby bat, while Dave and Paul are getting runs here and there. Eventually 9:30 rolls by and they got to go, here noticing the trend that sd guys normally max early lol. So I stick around till 10:30 and finally get a 40" something bat to conclude my night. Mission bay is beautiful
