After some drinks, I hit the beach for some late night sharking. Squatch was too cold, so decided not to fish which means I was going to be the sand hand if needed. The surf was surprisingly clean, but the wind was whipping, rain was horizontal, and air was cold!
20 minutes after getting the first bait in, I realized my rod was loaded up. I was pretty sure it was weeds, but soon as I grabbed the rod, I felt the tell tale signs of a shark and the rod started screaming out! The conditions made things tough and I finally got him close to the surf. Soupie!
It wasn't really huge, probably in the 70" range, but I couldn't get it close enough to grab. It kept taking line and the surf was not helping me at all. All of a sudden, the leader snaps....
Unfortunately, it appears from rolling, that it kinked the steel leader and broke it right at the kink. Dumb luck I guess, but spent too much time and pressure on it before found it's lucky moment.
I spent the next 3 hours hoping for another bite, but nothing. Not even a nibble. So bummed to be so close like that just to have it get away... Oh well, until next tide!
