Saltwater Boat Fishing Reports / Lasuen Knoll 4/9
« on: April 09, 2024, 02:40:00 PM »
The weather shaped up real nice to the point I figured I had to try the run to the 14 for the deep rockfish. Almost out of the paisans from last week already, so already due for a refill. Had a dentist appt at 1500, so factoring in the sunrise launch, I knew I would only have time for about 3 hours of fishing, but that's been enough for rockfish limits lately when it's on.

Got to the ramp with the parking lot lights still on, for once.

2 hour run to the bank. Morning wind blew against the W swell, but it cleaned up after an hour or so.

Used the big ol' Avet EX30 this day with 50# braid and leader, and a 24oz weight. Comfy T-handle. Started in 1050'. The spot was insta-bit last time, but didn't get a peck. Degrading to reel all the way back up without a bite...

On to 950'. This was where I loaded up in December on chameleons. Nothing. Felt the clock ticking.

Tried a new spot in 550'. Didn't take long to get bit there!

Steady pick on the specks, including a nicer 2lber.

Descended this rosy along with a small chili that came up right after. Started getting into the junk.

Haven't seen a greenstripe in a very long time.

It was 10am with 5 fish in the bag and I was feeling like just keeping whatever came up. Got another small chili and bagged it. Then snagged bottom and lost my rig. Last 24oz weight. Had my 30# rig ready with fresh loops so I headed to the high spot around 350' and tried it for 15 minutes with 16oz. Lots of marks and no bites until the very last minute when I caught this poor rosy that went in the bag.

Left at 10:50. Glassy conditions to start and got into white caps at the last stretch, glad I timed it that way. Also saw a whale as I was getting back on the coastal shelf, but not sure on the ID. Only came up once. Looked like we were on a collision course so I slowed down, then it never came back up. Brown(!) and very smooth (unlike humps or greys), 30-40' length. Not used to brown whales. Any guesses? Cool to see. Maybe a minke, or a fin. I think I saw one from afar last week as well, about 5 miles away from this and similarly near the coastal shelf. Loving the whale action so far this year. Though I'm sure the minute I bring Alicia out for it they will be gone to Alaska.

Not the limit I wanted, but it was a nice day and I did see some variety along with a whale, so can't complain.

Well turns out the appointment is next week…should have stayed out. Even got a text from the dentist office on the water to remind me it’s next week and I saw the sender and assumed it was a day-of reminder.

General Board / Released A Single...

I released a song onto Spotify and all other music streaming platforms, and iTunes (or whatever it's called now?). It's called Sea Monsters. Loose metaphor as you'll find out, I'm not trying to be The Fishing Songwriter or nothin', but you know me and it's gotta bleed in at some point.

Album of the same name on the way by the end of the year by the looks of things.

It was only a few years ago that it was 2 or 3.  It's very confusing just asking a general search engine the question since I don't know what year it is stating. I definitely need to dive in deeper when I get home for clarification.  My work security doesn't open the DFW site, as I guess that it detects the word "Firearms" in the body of the website.

The minimum size blew the dust off my neurons for that memory, it’s coming back to me now. Well thank god I don’t have to deal with that smaller limit for them because the local 300’ spot is like 95% bocaccio, at least as far as edible sized fish goes.

Still on the same regs as 2023 right now, but they juuuust passed some new stuff that will go into effect soon. The new stuff is kinda complicated, here’s a link to the news.

Vermilions down to 2.
2nd quarter is all depths allowed.
3rd quarter is sub 300’ shallow water only.
4th quarter is deep water only.
And descending devices are required on board.

I’m thankful the reds aren’t prolific near me so I don’t have to think about them too much. Bocaccio are part of the 10 combo, maybe the 2 per bag is before my time cuz I never heard of that.

Very good, a perfect way to spend a day off.  Gotta ask, what's a Paisan?

Bocaccio.

And I'm not kiddin' around!

Got lucky with my day off being the best conditions of the week. Was still a little worried about the half moon not pushing enough water but hoped for the best.

Launched 0700. Small but very mixed swell. Water on the inside looked like Koga's morning routine sewage spill. Woof!

Got to the grounds about 0815. 3 cattle boats, CSU research vessel of similar size looked like it was on a crew trip, and about 4 skiffs in the zone. Went 2/2 on the first drops for paisans, then drifted off it. Was pretty much the game. 12oz had scope but kept bottom just well enough. 5" flukes for bait. Paisans love finbait. Sanddabs were showing no mercy either. Caught 5 dabs and let all of them go except this absolute unit 12.5"er.

Not instant, but steady bite. Limited by 0945. First boat off the grounds. 9 paisan 1 red. Very simple trip. jrodda launch, jrodda catch limit, jrodda go home. Off the water before 1100.

Best of the day. 12.5" and 19".

Looks like about 4 dinners. Deep fried is coming first!

It’s Paisan season.

Finally finished off the BFT, low on thresher, no groundfish fillets, so took the opportunity to thaw and clean my chest freezer. All ready for another year of abuse.

Gonna launch early tomorrow and see what happens.

Day at the Docks is a little too far for me, but I was able to get the Lexa 500 in my hands at Charkbait. 400s are barely my cup of tea, 500 isn't my thing. I think as long as it fits you ergonomically it will prove to be a tank just like its smaller counterparts.

Nice to see a report. Weather hasn't been inspiring. Glad you're healed up enough to start chucking the long rods. Time to scout that stuff up here as well.

I’m on good terms with Charkbait locally, and Fishermen’s Hardware is on the other side of the block from me and has anything charkbait doesn’t. Probably won’t be back to Irvine BPS for a while unless there’s a sale or I’m stuck in Irvine with time to kill.

Hogans is solid, though very out of my way. Never been to Melton’s and I have heard great things.

Only got taxed $28. Haven't seen the big flukes in person so had to buy what I saw, the Daiwa SP minnows were 50% off so I went for that as well. And Alicia needed a snack. Avoided the many alluring soft plastics and put down many fun feeling rods.

I also noted immediately that it wasn't two stories. One of the sales associates said it has the largest saltwater selection of any BPS anywhere. I think it's comparable to the RC store in that regard, though it didn't even have Avets like Rancho does. Walked in and it seemed like 80% of the floor plan was clothes, and off in the corner was the tiny fishing section, but still managed to spend 30 minutes looking in that "little corner." Some cool mounts. Guess I gotta go back to Rancho Cucamonga to compare!

Did you meet Roland Martin or Jimmy Houston last night, Tim? Saw the pro lineup from last night on the site as I was looking for hours today.

Only saw bass in the tank, cats and panfish haven't moved in yet.

I'm guessing this is a portrait of the Summerland coast near Santa Barbara. I've reported from there before...

If you want to see some crazy stuff, watch The Chit Show on Youtube. Glad the Bass wanted to play, I'm holding out for nicer weather before I take The Cyclops out but I am chomping at the Bit !

Good weather is on the horizon! Definitely none for my next two days off but I have faith there will be a good window at the start of rockfish season.
