Fishing Talk / ?'s on Targeting Hammerheads
« on: August 31, 2015, 09:17:04 PM »
I guess this year it is possible to get a hammer from shore so i will be targeting them soon. I have a few questions for you guys that would help me maximize my chances.

1) How necessary is it to kayak baits out?
2) if it is the best bet, is it possible to paddle baits out in the rough San Diego surf?
3) Is mackerel still the ticket? Or would a bigger fish such as croaker or a small ray be the better bet?
4) Can a standard soupfin/sevengill setup pull in a hammerhead?

Just some questions to spark some convo about landing an exotic shark which would be awesome to see regardless of who catches one. Thanks.

Salt Water Shore Fishing Reports / Second Soupie 7/1
« on: July 01, 2015, 11:43:52 PM »
After 2 skunks on last week's lowtide, we decided to try our luck for this week. Turns out we started July off right. Got our poles in the water at about 7 and didn't receive a bite till 8:30. It was a short run that came off before I could get to my pole. Reeled in the Mack to see a chunk sliced off but the fish just missed my circle hook. Damn. Rebait recast and just past nine I was washing my hands when B_Litz yells TESTA. I run to my pole..definitely the right kind. This one was way stronger than my first and rolled much more. We got it In and measured her at 70".  Stayed another 2 hours for no bites.

Salt Water Shore Fishing Reports / 2 first Grinners let's go!! 6/5
« on: June 06, 2015, 11:41:24 AM »
No the tittle is not a tease like pinoy's lol. Good incoming  tide decent 2-3 surf kelp in the water but still fishable. Armed with new conventionals and better casting distance, tonight could be our night. Got our baits in the water at around 7:30 and about 15 minutes in B Litz has a bite... Dangit its a bat ray. 48" no pics though. He rebaits and casts out. We clean the seaweed on the beach and chat for awhile until 9 when his pole goes off again..this time it appears to be the right kind unfortunately the fish comes off making B Litz 0 for 2 on grinners.

We both rebait and get good casts in pretty deep water, high Hopes for our first grinner.  Our hopes were almost shut down by the high tide creeping in which could have left us in a bad situation so we were both a little skeptical. We get the gear ready just in case we need to move out fast. Just after we finish doing that, both our poles go off almost simultaneously. Mine is a slow run I pick it up...nothing. B Litz however is on and its for sure the right kind and decent sized!! After a 15 minute crazy fight, I realize im gonna have to do the first tail grab...great. I was too excited and was in like 3 feet of water..bad idea. I back up and grab the tail WOW these guys are strong! Because all our gear is packed we fumble with getting the supplies but manage to measure her at 71" and release her safely.

We were hyped and in shock and still had time left so it was my turn to send a new bait out..and at about 11 I hook up on mine! After a shorter fight with some crazy rolls and tail slaps I thought I was gonna loose it but I bring it in and B_Litz gets the tail grab done. This time a 69" model.  First fish on my conventional not bad! We release it no harm and pack it in because of the sketchy tide. Man what a night and what a fun fight.

This was our 7th surf attempt and our goal was to have one big shark before our 10th try and we have 2 so we feel pretty lucky. And oh latimeria...Put us on the shark list ;) lol

Salt Water Shore Fishing Reports / Slow 5/30
« on: May 31, 2015, 11:38:07 AM »
Got on the water at the usual spot  at about 7. Lots of weeds on the beach, but after a test cast we decided that it was fishable. Just at the peek of high tide, Blitz's pole goes off which resulted in this 52" bat ray.

He got his first fish on his new conventional unfortunately I wore the stripe and didn't get mine. After the tide started going out we got no bites. The tides look good next weekend for another try at a shark. Tight lines.

Salt Water Shore Fishing Reports / Surf Skunk 5/22
« on: May 23, 2015, 10:09:17 AM »
Friday night conditions were near perfect and hopes were high. Fished from 7-12 on a nice incoming tide with one bite.
This bite however was almost a guaranteed soupfin. The clicker went screaming on the fathom and B_Litz set the hook nicely and when the fish felt it the head shakes/tail slaps were making the rod tip go crazy. After about a minute the fish goes on another run and pop. F@CK. We both thought he either got tail slapped or cut off on structure but when we go to investigate the line, we see that it was the knot that busted from the white braid to the 75 yards of green heavy braid he uses for topshot.

The frustrating part that brought my friend to a rage was that the Knot was tied by a tackle shop where he got the reel spooled. Moral of the story tie your own knots. We learned the hard way but its still encouraging to almost know for sure we had a soup on.

Going back out for some redemption tonight.

Salt Water Shore Fishing Reports / Saturday Night 5/16
« on: May 17, 2015, 05:51:26 PM »
Arrived to our usual spot at around 7 o'clock after purchasing some frozen Mack as opposed to our usual fresh mack due to time restraints. When we arrived conditions looked somewhat brutal so we decided to drive down the coast in search for better conditions but eventually ended up going back close to our original spot. I casted out a chunk of
mackerel and almost immediately was picked up by of course a 53" batray. About an hour later B_Litz goes bendo and OF COURSE its another bat ray at 51". After those only two bites of the night we packed up at about 11. I guess the bat rays just really like us lol.

Despite the poor weather throughout the week, me and my buddy decided Saturday was the day for our third try in the surf. Got to the spot at around 7 and got our baits out in a pretty low tide but the surf was small and the weeds were minimal. We had no bites till 8:30 after the tide switched when B Litz poll goes taps a few times then goes bendo..as im watching him fight the fish, my pole goes bendo and i fight my fish for about 30 seconds and the fish dropped the bait :(. B Litz fish ended up being a 49" batray.

B Litz 49" sorry for the bad photo i tried to put filters on it and edit it but its just bad.

After rebaiting, at around 10 b litz's pole goes off again but really fast he tightens his drag but the fish keeps running it was pretty crazy after almost getting despooled, were about 100 yards down the beach when he finally lands it..expecting it to be closer to 55" but it was just a pissed off 50.5" that we measured but dont have a pic for because some dumb@ss grabbed the tape measure and forgot the phone.

Were really on the bat rays but even just a leopard shark would be nice. Were in the bat cave we need to be in the soup kitchen lol.

Fishing Talk / Long Rod specifications for the surf
« on: May 04, 2015, 10:19:53 PM »
I am new to surf fishing for big game and have had some success so far I just have a few questions about my rod.

I currently have a Penn pursuit 10' rod 2-6oz 20-40pound test.

I know I'm casting over 50 yards (because I have 50 yards of flurocarbon attached to my main line). Is this rod alright for wjat I'm doing or is a 12' or 13' rod really worth it?

Salt Water Shore Fishing Reports / Second Take..More batrays 5/1
« on: May 03, 2015, 02:05:15 PM »
Headed back to the spot where we had success last week and saw better conditions about 50 yards down so we took advantage. Set up the gear around 6:30..waves weren't too big but were pretty powerful and there was a weird current. Luckily there was no seaweed insight. About a half hour in, my pole goes bendo and i start to tighten the drag but the fish popes off...damm1t! We sat there without a bite for 3 hours and the skunk looked inevitable. At 10 me and buddy decided to recast and give the new bates a half hour try. Just before the half hour mark as we were about to pack it up, B_Litz's pole starts screaming...bat ray. The fish was fighting hard for about 10 minutes when my pole starts to go off..another batray! Also our first double hook up. We both are fighting our fish for about 15 minutes after that when B_Litz brings his close to shore and says he needs my help. By then, i had gotten mine pretty close to shore so i put my rod into my rod holder and set the drag right and ran over to help land the fish. We got it out of the water, took a picture, and measured her at 52". We then remove the hook and released her back to sea pretty quickly. I then ran over to my pole to see ive almost gotten de-spooled...great. I got the fish in however, took pictures, taped her at 51"(B_Litz beats me again >:( >:( >:() and released her safely. The double hookup was bad-ass its a shame nobody was on the beach to take pictures our else we wouldve landed them at the same time :(  although the night was slow, it was worth it in the end. Looking forward to next week!

Salt Water Shore Fishing Reports / 1st Surf Session..No stripe! 4/25
« on: April 29, 2015, 07:40:47 PM »
My buddy and I are somewhat experienced bay fisherman and have our fair share of batrays which we have gotten and little tired of. After researching the ways of surf fishing and reading many of your posts, we decided to give the SD surf a try friday night. We fished from 7-11 in what we thought were good conditions with 2-3 foot waves and little seaweed. We ended up getting 5 batrays and only one that was decent. Although we didn’t get any of the sharks we were targeting, we found that landing fish in the surf is pretty fun.

If we were casting far enough to catch the batrays were we in the casting range for soupfins and sevengills?

The highlight of the night was when my friends rod bent in half and the reel screamed for about 10 seconds spitting out line FAST.  Although we are surf fishing rookies, me and my friend think that this fish could have been a soupfin because of the speed it took off with and how it spit the circle hook so fast because bat rays have never done that to us before.. but we would like to hear your guy's opinion on what it could have been! We took a half ass pic of the mackerel after the run ill post it below or at least try because im struggling with the first time uploading pics ( its giving me an error message >:(

Anyways me and my friend are looking forward to joining the shark fishing community and would like to fish with some of the SD guys on here, any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated. Good luck and tight lines!
