Salt Water Shore Fishing Reports / We just needed a spoonful of soup
« on: April 19, 2019, 10:52:41 AM »
Have been searching new fishing grounds because the surf has been filling in and changing up all the reef and holes that have produced in the past for me. Found a spot that has potential for both low and high tides. Steve Mirasol and I have been itching for some shark action so I told him to come up my way and give this spot a try. We met up at 8:00 and got to walking. Setup rods and pinned some  fresh caught macs provided by Steve. Surf was large on the outside and coming straight in but a nice trough was in casting distance and our sputs were holding the bottom. We chatted it up about the week for a few minutes until my reel interrupted with a quick and jerky screech. Set the hook home and it’s game on! Good runs left and right through the middle but the shore dump was outrageous. Timed it between sets and Steve tails a nice 54” female Leo for me.   https://i.imgur.com/dFPrxhY.jpg     https://i.imgur.com/DHAEQhf.jpg    We recast and Steve is next up with a screaming freight train of a run! He’s buttoned down and thumbing the spool and it’s not quitting! We followed it down the beach and he gets it turned back and the tug of war is on with a very tough surf bat! He gets it close but the shore pound is still going on the steep bank.  I timed the sets, grab the leader and a nostril and we dragged that monster up the hill   https://i.imgur.com/qHnrX8m.jpg   A very heavy, pregnant female! It was so heavy that when we flipped it over to take a measurement, the cobble gave way and it belly slid back into the surf! It was easily 53” to 55”. I recast as Steve took a well deserved break. In a few I’m getting little bounces, then a drag pull, point the rod as it swims away and set the hook home again! This one comes in a little easier so I’m thinking a smaller Leo. Get it to the shore and it’s a Seven gill!   https://i.imgur.com/c4TiilV.jpg   https://i.imgur.com/FQWRWRo.jpg   https://i.imgur.com/jP8qyFb.jpg   https://i.imgur.com/ciCTQzo.jpg                       We tried a while longer trying to get a Soupfin for the Grand Slam but the tide was changing and the middle was starting to get rough. Sorry so long, but I just wanted to share the stoke and hope everyone gets theirs too!

Water has cleared up considerably and the surf is mellowing out too in the North County areas. Looks like good days ahead to soak some baits 8)

I have been putting time on the sand, but not getting the grinners tho.  >:(

You're only 2 away!

Based on my progress as of late, it's gonna take me to 2020 to get to twenty.  >:(
Maybe someone should drop me a PM on the location of SSK?  ;D

I ruled out one spot Saturday night... total skunkage :(
