Salt Water Shore Fishing Reports / More Vampires
« on: March 16, 2015, 05:15:21 AM »
Been fishing my spot now trying to target hairtails (ribbonfish). they say they get up to 7ft or more but the biggest so far is 36-38". I got excited sat. night when I went and hooked one that peeled 8-9lbs of drag off my Calcutta and made the braid sing as it sliced through the water. After only a few seconds it let go and even though I was throwing an XRAP 14 with trebles, it did not connect as well as I had hoped. A guy just across the way managed one that was just a hair shorter than he was tall. (Japanese guys aren't very tall, so i'm assuming it was 4 1/2ft). seeing that got me pumped and before I knew it I was getting hits every other cast. only two hookups with smaller models around 35-36" (these guys are only a couple pounds each). Eventually I lost my Xrap with trebles. I was reeling it in very slow, just the way they like it, felt a small tap and slack... something bit clean though my 50lb floro leader before it could even pull tight.  ;D

oh well. went out and bought two new ones and some pre made 20lb wire leaders.  ;)

no pics of the Hairtails. I did bring one home and it tastes DELICIOUS! both sashimi and fried up in butter.

I will leave you with this however. a beautiful pic Hannah took of my Vampire infested fishing hole. also where I caught a large Guitarfish recently.

40lb dodo is a beauty!  Very cool to see all the beautiful pelagics coming in from you out there Chris.  I'm looking forward to a big shoreline fish here soon.  I got to imagine there is some weird stuff swimming the shoreline waters out there!

there is. I was pretty hesitant about it last year but learned a few tricks. I've invested a few dollars over the winter on some lures and gear to get me going this summer. I hope to be able to post up a 40lb mahi of my own but off the rocks!

That would be damn cool to see.  Is there grouper in close there or Trevally?

there are. Grouper fishing off the rocks is like soupfin fishing in the OC. its been done, but not often enough to call it "grouper fishing". the trevally are here now. I've been out looking for them a few times since Jan with no luck. I've seen some pretty good blow ups on my way to work though. go figure right? the mullet will be spawning soon so I think my luck might change. we also have Dogtooth tuna and YFT that are caught from shore. the Dog tooth being one of the more desirable catches. I want to live line a small bonito or tuna out on my 12/0 and see if I can get a marlin or sail. commercial guys are getting them several hundred yards from shore but I don't think its ever been done from shore here.

there's just so many fish and ways to catch them, I probably won't even put a dent in the surface before I have to leave.

Saltwater Boat Fishing Reports / shark bait and a 40lb mahi
« on: March 11, 2015, 06:13:10 AM »
got some nice eating fish and a few tunas and skips for bait. my buddy got the biggest fish of the day with a Mahi tipping 40lbs.  8-)

one of my cows. released.

some decent yellowfin and a few smaller bait size ones.

my buddy and his big mahi.

I had to get a pic for reference.

my biggest Mahi so far is only 32lbs. for size reference. (the little one took a big treble though its face so it made it to the cooler. we release the chickens.)

no Marlin this day (Saturday) but a white marlin came in on another boat Sunday. I'm going to start slow trolling some yellowfin now that the warmer currents are reaching us.

10ft, 10'9" and 9'8" caught down the way from them over the past 4 weeks. as well as a couple in the 9ft range from my old beach I fished there. the spring and fall is an incredible time to fish down there.

Looks like a Green Scat to me. Was this near an estuary? At that size it could be full marine so it doesn't matter I suppose.

it was in a marina next to a river mouth. there were several I could see, this one was the only one that A) either attacked it and got hooked in the head or B) my lure bumped into and snagged in the head.  ;D

Was wondering when you'd start putting up some reports from the Orient. Cool catches!!

most of the spots we fish are pretty hairy and your bound to get wet so I never bring a camera with me. My father in-law bought me a cool waterproof camera a while back and I finally bought a new charger for it after losing it on a plane trip. I'm going to try to take a lot more pictures now.

Those are pretty damn awesome, Chris!  That Spadefish is bad ass!

I'm not even sure what it is. it was over 10" for sure, maybe 12-13". first thing I thought was it looked just like a scat that I had in my aquarium. also resembles some type of spade fish. im just going to have to wait until KenT ID's it.

if you can cast it you can locate drop off and troughs, submerged kelp and rocks to avoid as well.

I've never really used a FF to look at fish, just depth and structure. well, bait balls too.
