Salt Water Shore Fishing Reports / Team VC SNBF-X 3/11/17
« on: March 12, 2017, 09:08:21 AM »
Since all the scouting over the last couple months yielded zero bat rays, we were at a loss for were to fish.  The harbor was our best option if we could find some sand, but they started dredging last week.Made the call to hit a beach we know will produce fish and hoped some rays showed up to play.

Dad and I got set up around 10am.  Mark and Ricky showed up later.  We soaked macks and squid all day for nada.  Even tossed the LC and C-rigs with nothing to show for it.  about 4:00 Ron showed up to cheer us on   ;D

Around 5:00 Mark and Ricky had had enough and headed out.  I didn't blame them, and was tempted to follow.  As the beach started clearing of people the tide started to come back in and it started looking really good.  Ron set up to our left and between the three of us we had 5 rods out soaking mackerel.

Around 6:00 Dad gets a good bounce on his pole, but misses it.  A half hour later it happens again.  Somewhere in there Ron got a good run that was dropped also.  About 7:30 my rod takes a bow and line starts peeling off.  I picked it up, get the hook set and it’s off!  Drag burning run that took a bit to get stopped.  Played tug of war for a bit and then as I start to gain some line it heads south.  Starts peeling line again so I crank down my already tight drag some more.  At this point I’m thinking I actually have a decent bat here!  It keeps going and I’m worried it will get into Ron’s line and does end up doing just that but not the close, the far one.  Thankfully it wasn’t bad and Ron got it untangled quick.  I finally turned him and he takes another big run north.  The weight and power is amazing.  This is when I start to feel some tail slaps and realize this is something toothier.  After about 25 minutes he finally comes into the wash and we can see it’s a massive sevengill!  Dad and Ron get him up on the sand so I can get the hook out and measure him.  104” male and he’s fat!  I think Ron was right when he said it must have been all amped up on testosterone because we’ve never seen a 7 fight like that before.  After a couple of pics we drag him back in the water (super heavy!) and he swims off nicely.  So stoked for a new PB!  8)

As I removed the hook Ron pointed out a lower tooth that was exposed and I was able to get myself a souvenir!

As we are talking and I start tying on a new rub leader one of Ron’s rods goes off.  He’ll fill in his pics and story later….

Back down at our spot, I’m still trying to get a new rub leader tied on and my dad’s reel starts screaming!  He gets the hook set and this fish is off to the races.  This fish is hyper and every time my dad would gain some line it took off again.  After about 15 minutes of this it finally gets into the white water and we see an unfamiliar tail surface.  Soupfin!  My dad’s first legit shark and it’s a VC soupie!  I must have grabbed her tail a half a dozen times as I got her beached and she went berserk each time.  This one turned out to be a 65” female and she had been abused recently.  Three separate wounds on her.

I’m so stoked that my dad finally got his first real shark, but pretty jealous he got a Soupfin before me LOL!

We soaked bait for a couple more hours, but being cold and wet and hungry (along with the fact that the parking lot closed an hour ago) we decided to start packing it up.  That’s when my dad gets another reel screamer.  I was a lot closer so I got the hook set and handed it off to him.  But after fighting into the wash it popped off and was gone.  Probably another sevengill.

Got loaded up and stopped at In-N-Out to warm up with some burgers and watch the results of the Bat Fight.  Congratulations Team LA!!!  Ron, good fishing with you again bro, sorry for poaching your spot  ;)

Even after a long batless day, we sure ended on a high note and had a blast!

General Board / Any black powder experts?
« on: February 22, 2017, 03:52:58 PM »
About 25-30 years ago my late Grandpa and I built a .50 cal black powder pistol together from a kit.  It was a lot of fun and a special memory for me.  He's always had it hanging on a wall in their den.  Well last weekend while visiting my Grandma she said that she wanted me to have it so I brought it home.  What I'd like to do is take it apart, clean and polish it, and reassemble it in working condition as a project with my boys.
Do any of you have any experience with these or know any good sources for info?
It looks like this but the fit and finish is not as nice.
(I edited with actual pics of my pistol)

Salt Water Shore Fishing Reports / Last Cast Connection 2/12/17
« on: February 13, 2017, 09:08:27 AM »
Our family has had a nasty cold running it's course over the last few weeks so I've had to cancel a few planned trips to the beach.  This weekend everyone was finally feeling mostly better so my wife pushed me out the door when I got an invite from Ron to meet up last night.  I met Ron and my dad a little after 5:00.
The tide was way out and structure wasn't ideal so after some deliberating I picked a spot and started soaking.  Tried mac, perch, and then squid for a bit to see if there were any bats around, but all came back untouched.  The macs and squid that I hastily picked up at a liquor store were sub par at best, pretty dried out and freezer burned.
I knew I had to leave at 8:00 so at 7:30 I pinned on a big chunk of mac jerky and sent it out into the hole.  The tide had filled in a bit at this point.  After about 10 minutes my rod starts doing the sevengill shuffle.  Picked it up and started reeling as fast as I could as it swam toward me.  Finally got pressure on and felt the weight as the circle set in the corner of his jaw.  Got him beached, unhooked, measured, took a couple pictures and sent him home.  Just in time to pack up and get home to make dinner for my wife and I  ;)
81" male, incoming tide, on a dehydrated mac head.

General Board / Visiting SD
« on: February 03, 2017, 04:55:48 PM »
Well pretty close anyway.
Hey SD guys, we'll be down in Carlsbad on the 17th-19th visiting my Grandma.
I'd love to fish with some of your guys (but not all LOL) if you're available, and I'd love to add a Soupfin to my list!
I probably can only fish one nigth, the 17th or the 18th.  Gotta spend time with the family too  :)
I'd like to stay as close to Carlsbad as possible if there's any good spots to maximize fishing time.
If none of you can make it, maybe I could at least get a nudge in the right direction.
Thanks!

Decided I needed to put my 2017 fishing license to use and headed down to a close NVC spot on my lunch break.  I only had about 15 minutes to fish since I had to get gas first.  4th cast gets a nibble and the 5th cast got a hookup!

Quick picture and release and I'm throwing the LC hoping for another before I have to go.  A few casts later it gets hammered!  After a great fight I landed my PB surf perch!  13 inches and thick!  Sorry for the blurry pic :(

Hope the rest of 2017 goes as well as my first outing!

*UPDATE*
Hit the same spot on my lunch again today hoping for another before the rain came.  Bested yesterdays PB by at least 1/2"  :)
(This one took the tail hook deep and was bleeding bad.  Looks like I'll get to try some perch bait after the storm!)

SOLD
I picked this up brand new about a year ago thinking I needed to switch to conventional to be cool 8)
Well after trying it out a few times with my Jigmaster 500 on it, I realized it's not my style. Maybe "chicks dig conventionals", but I already have mine and don't plan on ever looking for another  :D
Anyway, it's in great condition and I'd like to get $80 for it or possibly trade for other gear (let me know what you have).

Conditions didn't look too bad anywhere last night, so I decided to hit the last spot I fished hoping for another Leo or surf bat.
Dad came out and we got set up around 5:00.  Hard to beat this view, it was a great way to start the evening!

I was hoping that as the tide came in, the waves on the outside would settle down and give us some calmer, deep water.  Unfortunately after an hour or so it was clear that wasn't going to happen.  The surf just kept getting bigger and none of our baits were being touched so we decided to move to calmer water.  We jumped over to a protected beach by the harbor and soaked bait there for another hour with the same results.  :-\  I did find a nice reel cover for one of my baitcasters though  :)

Decided to move one more time to a spot in the harbor where we could try for bats and at least catch a few critters.  I've never tried the light gear here other than letting the kids fish for white croaker.  I figured they'd be fun on my 4-1/2' Micro light trout rod.  We threw out some big baits and the set up the light rods with squid bits.
I ended up with three new species for my list!  The first was this little Sand Bass.

Then I caught this little guy.  Any ideas on the ID? Ben?

Then a little Calico.

Then a chunky Calico.

Three new species! Ok, they are dinks, but it was a blast on the ultra light and at least I beat the skunk  ;D

As I'm watching the end of my UL twitch again, I see the spool on my heavy rod start to slowly unwind as something swims off with my chunk of mac.
I flipped off the baitfeeder and set the hook on a heavy bat!  I've hooked some big ones here several times and always lost them on a buoy or piling so tightened the drag down and tried to muscle it in.  This one had a lot of muscle itself and proceeded to peel off line at will.  Fortunately it just went back and forth through the harbor and stayed away from the snags.  During the fight my dad stuck a small Calico on his light rod (his first also).  After a battle of tug-of-war it took off toward where my dad's line was and I could feel the two lines start rubbing.  He started reeling in and we tried to get them separated.  As I got the beast closer to the dock it made a big lunge and POP.    >:( Another one got the best of me.
Here,s a Pic of the Calico my dad caught.  They are pretty fish!

I tied on a new rig and tossed out another mac chunk.  My dad had to head home so I started packing up the rest of my gear when my heavy rod goes off again.  Hook set and fish on!  This one didn't feel as big as the first, but still gave me a good work out!  Took me up and down the dock a few times and had a couple long runs out toward the harbor mouth.  I finally worked it in close and it kept running under the dock trying to cut me off.  I had no idea how to land it solo on the dock.  It finally tired out enough that it was just treading water and I took a couple quick pics in case it got away.  I was able to get a hole of the shock leader and open the bait feeder on my reel so my rig couldn't get dragged off.  The 80 lb leader cut into my finger but I got my hands in it's blow holes and dragged it up on the dock. Measured 42", not a monster, but a new PB for me!  I was so focused on measuring it and getting it back in the water I forgot to take pictures of it on the dock so these are all I have  :(

At least what seemed like another surf skunking was saved by the harbor.  Hoping this means it's coming back to life after the dredging early this year.
Heading back out again tonight hoping to find a grinner.

Salt Water Shore Fishing Reports / Wished upon a different star 12/8/16
« on: December 09, 2016, 10:12:02 AM »
Got out again for a short session last night (2 nights of fishing in a row!)
Conditions were great again.  Very low surf, almost no wind, and ZERO SALAD.
Had a bit of cloud cover that helped keep it a bit warmer too.
Had plans to meet with Joe and try a new spot, but traffic screwed that up so I went to a different new location to soak some bait while I waited for him to get there.
Not bites or molested bait in the hour before he got there so we moved to a different spot he suggested.  I had to leave by 8:00 because I told my wife I'd pick us up some dinner on the way home so once we got set up I only had time for one soak.  Tossed out a big chunk of mac on a new style of rig I've been wanting to try and walked over to check out Joe's tripod rod holder while he got set up.  (That rod holder is nice, I'm working on putting together my own version.)
So as we're talking I see my pretty pink glow stick start dancing around and then my rod goes bendo!
I run down the beach to grab it and get pressure on it to set the hook which gets the drag screaming pretty good.  At first I thought is was a medium size bat from the strait run out to sea, but then as I got it turned I started feeling the tail slaps and head shakes, shark!
Knew it wasn't a sevengill because of how good it was fighting and how fast it ran.  Once it finally got into the suds I could see the saddles of my first big Leopard!
Joe dragged it up on the sand and took a few pictures for me.  Measured at 52", so stoked to finally get one over 2 feet!

As I'm releasing it, Joe saw his rod start bouncing and pulled in a small bat.
I had to get home, but I think Joe got another one after I left.
Great to finally fish with you Joe, we need to do that more often!

Salt Water Shore Fishing Reports / Star gazing 12/7/16
« on: December 08, 2016, 01:08:19 PM »
That's about all we did for 4 hours last night without so much as a twitch from either rod  :(
No surf, no current, not one strand of salad, and no freaking fish!
Hopefully tonight will be better!
As far as the stars go, what is the giant orange/yellow star/planet to the southwest that moved north? Super bright!  I thought it was a plane heading straight at us for the longest time.

General Board / Albuquerque Vacation Report
« on: November 01, 2016, 11:50:23 PM »
Well we sure had a great time!  This was our first real family vacation and I'm asking myself, "Why haven't we done this before!?"
Thank you all for the great suggestions of places to go and things to do.  We were able to see a lot and do all the major kid-friendly stuff without doing too much and still having time to just relax.  Definitely much needed time together.  We've decided to put money away monthly to save up for the next one every year.
We left Santa Paula on Saturday at 4am.  Made it to Barstow at 7am and stopped for breakfast.

Next stop was a stretch break at a little oasis in the middle of nowhere on Route 66.

We recently purchased a 2010 GMC Savana 2500 12 passenger van.  SO GLAD WE DID!  We all fit very easily and the front seats are the most comfortable I've ever had.  I could drive all day and not be sore or stiff.

We spent the night in Flagstaff AZ.  What a cool town!  I told Kallie if I could find work there, we're moving!  We squeezed all 7 of us in an EconoLogde room for the night.  Makes for creative sleeping arrangements.

The next morning we headed north to the Grand Canyon.  What an amazing sight!  Our first time there and it blew us away!  It almost seems fake, it's so incredible.  I could stand there for hours and just look.  The kids just like climbing on the rocks  ;D

After a while on the road again my wife pops in the Eagle's Hell Freezes Over CD and I know we must be close to Winslow AZ.
Had to stop for a photo op.

We rolled into ABQ pretty late on Sunday night.  We had booked a place on Airbnb that was up in the hills on the east side of ABQ in little town called Tijeras.  The place was on 7 acres of forest and it was built around the turn of the century as a school house.  Later converted into a farm house it fit us perfectly.  4 bedrooms and lots of space for the kids to play.  Since we got in late it was dark and quiet.  We couldn't see anything around but trees and my wife was expecting a night from the Texas Chainsaw Murder movie LOL.  Once the sun came up the next morning we were excited about this place!

It was the perfect headquarters for our week there.
The first day we needed some groceries and stuff so we also made a trip to the Petroglyph National Monument.  It was a pretty cool place and the kids loved searching for the indian drawings.

We spent the rest of the day relaxing and hiking around the property.
Tuesday we decided to go the the ABQ Zoo and aquarium.  We all love anything to do with wildlife so we had a great time.  The Zoo was great, with lots of animals we don't see at our local zoo and habitats that make viewing the animals very easy.  My favorite as always was the reptile house, but the kids loved seeing the Llamas and Alpackas up close and petting them.

The aquarium was very cool also.  Lots of great displays and exhibits (although it was mostly related to east coast fish).

We were pretty beat after a long day of walking so we finished it off with dinner at The Cracker Barrel (another first for us).
Great fried shrimp and hush puppies!
Wednesday we spent some time exploring the shops in Old Town.

Thursday we went for a hike in the morning to Travertine Falls.  Should have been called Travertine Trickle LOL

Had to stop for a snack break to eat some wild cactus apples :)

Friday morning we headed for home.
We took a scenic route through the Painted Desert and Petrified Forest.

The kids had a blast digging for dino bones at the visitor center.

I did not enjoy the stretches when my wife drove quite as much ;)

We spent the night in Flagstaff again on the way back.  Last night on the road.

Date night on the road calls for some creativity.  Burgers and Netflix in the hotel bathroom while the kids sleep.
If you're ever in Flagstaff you have to try Bun Huggers!

The last day was a long, straight shot home.  It was a wonderful week to spend quality time with the family and make some great memories.  Thanks for reading!

With 5 kids, pumpkin carving at our house is an hours long event that requires some preparation...

The kids draw pictures of what they want  on the pumpkin and then help scoop out all the goop.  I do most of the carving since they're still a bit sketchy with the knives.  Here is our final results.

Let's see yours!

General Board / Family vacation to NM!
« on: October 05, 2016, 03:47:46 PM »
Hey all,
My wife, kids, and I are taking our first real family vacation in a couple of weeks.  Through a weird twist, we ended up deciding to go to Albuquerque NM.  We'll be staying in a Airbnb house in the hills outside of town (Tijeras).

I was wondering if any of you have been to or lived in the area and could recommend fun stuff to see and do?

Our kids are young (8, 6, 4, 2, and 6 mo.) so family friendly stuff for the most part.  Outdoor stuff too!
Any suggestions welcome!

Also, we'll be taking Highway 40 across from socal so if there's any cool stuff to see along the way I'd love to know that as well

Can't wait to finally take a vacation and make some great memories! :)
