Tackle Talk / Re: Fathom over saltist bg?
« on: April 17, 2015, 11:56:28 AM »
I've had both the Saltist BG's and I currently own Fathoms. Both cast great with the Fathom coming out on top. Drags are better on the Fathom and it is pretty cool that you can change out the gearing  on them as well if you prefer a slower retrieve. The Saltist does have a nice durable finish. Although the Saltist is cheaper retail-wise, deals can found for Fathoms if you have the patience to look. Honestly, you can't go wrong with either, but I lean more towards the Penn Fathoms. I think ultimately, price will be the determining factor for most. I was able to to get 2 Penn FTH40 for less than $140 each with free shipping  ;D

Maybe a little rest is in order...

Joel, that bat was probably 150lbs. if I had to guess. Dragging those bats back into the water is work out for sure.  ;)

I'm thinking more like 120-140lbs.

If it makes you feel any better Steve I've been having the same luck. Only fish I've caught this year was at the bat fight.

Great night of fishing, bummer that soupie broke off it was huge.

If there was ever a time to only catch a lone bat, it's the winning one at a bat fight!!

I've bin thinking about tailing em....but so far I just man up and tail grab it with my surf rod in my left hand, and right hand on its tail and drag!

Can it really be that easy?
I solo tail grabbed and beached my 8.5' 7~gill with one arm. Adrenaline is awesome. :)

So is having all my fingers!

Wow!!! Like I said on FB, you're lucky as hell!! Time for bigger baits!!

I've been giving it a lot and was wondering what you guys do when solo fishing, how do you get that shark in? I've been looking at roping the tail. Thoughts?

Tackle Talk / Re: Penn 500 Jigmaster
« on: April 10, 2015, 08:49:57 AM »
Mike,
Thanks for the recommendation!
I'd love to pic up one of those rods, but even as a budget rod, it still doesn't fit mine LOL.
I got some line for the jigmaster, but am going to have to stick with the rod it's on for now.
My budget will pretty much only allow for bait at this point.  I'll keep it in mind for down the road though!

The rod you will still totally work! Was just throwing it out there in case you were looking. That setup is perfect for the bay.
