: Oside bait
: Chris March 31, 2017, 12:20:16 PM
Went to the pier last night in search of bait. Lots of people there from 5pm till about 7 when the wind and a cloud of dirty water made them leave. About 8pm I finally got one Mack (after 3small queen fish) and then a jack smelt. Had the pier to myself for about an hour. Threw out the top water glow stick with squid and a sabiki with glow stick and 1/4oz weight. When the top water wasn't being eaten the sabiki was. Went back and forth till about 9pm and left with 21 baits. 17 macks and 4 smelt. Might as well try 'em.

Released two micro macks, 4 queens and several small smelt.

That sounds like things are getting better. Maybe SI has improved as well. Can never have too much bait.

Making macs up here has been hit or miss. Guys report nothing for a day or two, then WFO. Doesn't appear to be any real rhyme or reason either.

Yeah, It's been a while since I had fresh macks.
I wonder what Jim's been up to and if he's been getting out to capitalize on any bait making trips with his SS Kitty.

Between work trips, taxes, errands and what not I haven't had time to get out. Aiming to next Sunday though.

Have a front seat arriving tomorrow, and sealed the ribs on the bottom last week.

It's been hit or miss there too. Seems like it's that way everywhere. If I'd had left with the crowd I would have said it was dead.

Got 26 last night including a queen fish and jack smelt. Slid a live mackerel off the end of the pier using my island rigs and didn't get touched. Mackerel was still alive after 3 hours though.

That's good hook placement!

That's good hook placement!

I used a clip down rig and made the drop from
The stop ring to the weight a little over 6ft. The stop ring has a swivel at the bottom so I just tied straight to it and then the clip at the bottom with the weight, fed the line back through the swivel and brought the loop down to the clip making the drop about 2ft and super easy to cast. My slide leader was about 4ft and with the Mack hooked in the back I feel the longer drop line allowed the bait to swim in circles around the line more comfortably and not be pushed into the sand which may or may not have kept it alive longer. My rod never stopped vibrating the whole time and something was working the bait and it sounded like threshers smacking the surface a few times. If they were there they weren't interested in my prime bait.
