Hop Skippin' 1/12-1/14
« on: January 14, 2022, 10:05:31 AM »
1/12

Started my days off Wednesday. Fished behind the LB breakwall since the real surf didn't look good. Threw the LC from 1300-1530. Some scattered pelicans occasionally diving on bait outside of casting range. Nice warm day.

Only snagged my nemesis.

Doesn't count for first fish of the year...

Wanted to stay at my parent's house in Newbury Park later in the night so made my way up the coast. Looked at Rat Beach to start and the shore pound was too much for me to bother. Meandered my way up to Malibu and threw the LC from about 1500-1600. Was catching grass every cast, might have gotten 10-20' of clean action each cast before hanging up. Saw a little bit of fry in the water. No bites.

Woke up at 0630 and went to my favorite beach in Ventura for slabs and potential stripers. Broke in my new neoprene waders and stayed warm. Had a good set of holes as usual for this beach. Threw the LC and took about an hour before I got my first fish of the year, no asterisk.

A little bit later a solid foot long.

One other short bite. Left a little before 0900. Lost my beanie on the beach...

Sounds like I might go sharking with Jared this weekend.

Thanks for the reports. Reminds me of one my LC sessions a few years ago.

(I kind of think he went for it.)

Damn, double snagged 0 Point fish... at least it wasn't a -1 thornback ray.

Nice perch though!  I'm really looking forward to seeing a shark on the sand here soon though.  I'm hoping you guys get the big pay off when you hit the surf!
You can't catch them from your computer chair.

Ay! Thanks for reminding me. That LC some fresh hooks! I think those scars are mostly hook rash. I haven’t caught THAT many fish on it. ;D

Ben that butterfly ray does look like it went for it. Interesting!

My buddy just caught his first corbina the other day, on an LC no less. Annoys the hell out of me! Jk it’s great for him but it kinda makes sense that beans might be more likely to hit a baitfish imitation in the absence of sand crabs in the winter. Kinda why I’m throwing the LC now so much, I’ll take halibut and exotics as well as beans right now.
