Salt Water Shore Fishing Reports / Working the tide
« on: January 30, 2022, 05:51:22 AM »
Not a fan of these morning tides, with a 6.2' I could only think of one beach I could fish. The beach is maybe 150 yards long total, but I had a plan. Started at greylight slowly fishing north with the drop shot for two hours, it was too deep for the LC. When I turned around the tide was at 3' and falling, so I fished the LC on the way back. Caught two on the LC and two on the drop shot. Also missed three, so I went 4 for 7.......of course they were released

Salt Water Shore Fishing Reports / Fishing with my father
« on: January 10, 2022, 03:53:23 AM »
For the last year or so I've been taking my father to the pier.  He'll be 97 this year and his balance is getting to where the beach doesn't work.  His dementia is worsening, but he's healthy as a horse.  Yesterday we each caught one calico and missed one solid hit.  With the lack of reports I figured I would chime in with this one.  We go twice a week, when I have something solid to report I'll do it.

General Board / Fish
« on: December 01, 2021, 03:09:18 AM »
I've had people ask me because I'm 100% C&R, if we eat fish.  I have a friend that takes a 2 or 3 long range trips a year that doesn't eat fish, so I pay for the processing and get the fish the last few years.  Ran down to San Diego yesterday and picked up YFT, wahoo, dorado, grouper and some bottom fish.  Over 125 pounds of fish, and we will eat it all in a few months.  So yes, we eat a LOT of fish  😎

Salt Water Shore Fishing Reports / Had a good October
« on: November 01, 2021, 04:52:10 AM »
Halibut wise, October has been very kind to me.  21 halibut total, 4 of which were legal (released) plus my PB. Ended up with 2 halibut (one legal) and one calico this morning, I forgot how hard bass hit the hard bait. Hopefully soon we can find the 'toothy critters'

Salt Water Shore Fishing Reports / Lucky Duck
« on: October 16, 2021, 02:34:44 PM »
DISCLAIMER:  I am not some super talented fisherperson, just the old 'Right Place, Right Time".  And a lot of luck!!!

In three sessions I have caught 17 halibut within a 40 yard stretch of beach, they seem to be staked in right now.  I have been skunked at this location countless times, so it's a matter of pure luck.  Out of the 17 three have been legal (released), and four of them over 20".  I hung seven this morning, only missing one take on the LC, they went from 22" down to 12".  Hopefully they'll still be hanging around when I get to go next weekend. The picture was taken in the dark trying to hold my phone with one hand and my headlamp with the other

Salt Water Shore Fishing Reports / Another solo session
« on: October 11, 2021, 05:47:06 AM »
Had a chance to make a short session yesterday, even though I have a cold I'm glad I went.  5 halibut on the sand, two lost during the fight (one was a tank) and missed a few takes.  I didn't measure the first one, it had the LC half way inhaled and I wanted to get it back in the water.  The other one I was super excited, I thought I had finally joined the 30" club, but it was not to be. Sounds crazy, but I was kind of bummed with a 28" hali.  All fish released............................

Salt Water Shore Fishing Reports / Fishing solo

Once a week my sister stays with my dad and I get to fish for a few hours.  This morning was my day to fish, it was a pretty good morning.  Even thought I'm 100% catch and release, I always smile when I hit that 22" mark.  Like the old saying goes, "close, but NO SMILE"  😂

Ended up with 5 halibut total and missed 4 takes, all on the long pause.  Wind three or fours times, then pause and twitch.  Nice to fish with the LC for a change, fish ran from 14" to 21"

Salt Water Shore Fishing Reports / Hit the sand without dad
« on: July 18, 2021, 03:34:40 PM »
Had a chance to fish with Theresa without my father, great change of pace.  First cast with the LC resulted in what I'm sure was a tanker WSB, burned 100 yards instantly before coming unbuttoned.  Later fished the same spot with a swimbait, the result was a smaller but still respectable WSB.  Measured just over 33", quick measurement and safely released.  Swam off strong, waving goodbye with it's tail............thank you for the pictures "T"

One of those times I was grateful for the line capacity of the vr50

A few days ago my fishing partner, granddaughter & love of my life passed away on her 20th birthday.  Vaya Con Dios "Little Bit", until we fish again.....  I'm only sharing this because I can't make a phone call without breaking down, so this was a easy way to reach out to my friends.  Respect, Verne

Salt Water Shore Fishing Reports / Went for a drive
« on: February 15, 2021, 12:42:00 PM »
Tony, my father and me took off (separate cars) for Ventura at 5:00 this morning.  Arrived at a beach we haven't fished since 2019, couldn't believe my eyes.  Over 4 feet of sand was gone, a beach we used to fish at a 4.5 tide was wet at a 2.0 tide.  So we decided to drive south and hit the pier, got there and there was already 9 people fishing.  Soooooo, off to location #3.  Conditions were perfect, only no one told the fish.  Me and Tony were soaking mackerel on wire leader and my dad had squid on 20lb fluoro.  3 hours and everything went unmolested, not even the crabs were interested.  Almost 140 miles for nada, but it was a nice drive.  I really miss fishing in the evening, but my father doesn't do so well late at night.   8)

Salt Water Shore Fishing Reports / We tried
« on: April 03, 2020, 05:00:21 AM »
Two of us took a run at them last evening, we rode up in separate cars.  The conditions were perfect, low surf and zero weeds.  Got set up and just sat down and he gets the "right" kind of bite.  He gave it the 5 minute rule, reeled it in to find his mackerel head shredded.  We thought "Oh Hell Yeah", this is gonna be one of those sessions.  For the next 4 1/2 hours we never got a tickle.........ended up doing the "Drive of Shame" on the way home.........but it was nice to be on the sand, not sure when we can get out again   :)

Salt Water Shore Fishing Reports / Gonna take up golf
« on: February 20, 2020, 07:30:32 AM »
We drug my dad out yesterday evening for a shot at the toothy critters, couldn't have asked for better conditions.  Incoming tide, low surf, zero weeds, barely a breeze and not too cold.  We got bit four times, if you can call mine bites.  My rod bounced maybe 2" (three different times), at first I figured they were lobster.  But after Tom's "5 minute rule" I would reel it in to find the head or tail cut clean just missing the hook.  Aaron got bit once, his rod snapped over like a bird hit it then went slack.  He took up the slack and waited, but alas nothing.  When he finally reeled it in his hook was clean and the mackerel head gone.  This sh!t is getting old, thinking about trading my long rods for some golf clubs   :(

Salt Water Shore Fishing Reports / Buzzer Beating Bummer
« on: February 13, 2020, 06:53:30 AM »
We took another run at them yesterday, had a limited time to give it a try.  The woman I pay to hang with my dad needed me home by 8:30, so I told the guys we had to pack it in at exactly 7:15.  Baits in the water at 3:30, not a single bump on three rods for almost 4 hours.  As I was watching the clock and my rod at the same time, at 7:13 my rod does the single bounce.  I pick it up and wait a couple minutes........nothing.  Reel it in and find the mackerel head crushed just shy of the hook.  Next time I'm gonna choose my day more carefully, half our session was spent during the slack tide. On the bright side, we've gotten bit at least once every session in the last month.  Until the next time..........

Salt Water Shore Fishing Reports / OOPS!!
« on: February 04, 2020, 08:50:21 PM »
Took another run at them this evening, only had a couple hours away from home.  But we batted 1000, only got bit once..........but we put it on the sand.  I got careless getting the hook out, I felt like an idiot.  69" female, mackerel on the incoming tide.  Until the next time, and remember...........these things have sharp teeth!!
