Salt Water Shore Fishing Reports / OTW as I type
« on: March 26, 2016, 06:25:48 PM »
Team Hamilton is out again to do battle with the nefarious Bay Ray!

Not really nefarious, but we are fishing for them. Two rods, one double squid, the other, a mackerel half. Hopefully the good half.

Report (s) to follow as they happen.

Do you guys use a different leader length for surf compared to bay?
Any preference for the type of right in the surf?

My boys and I are out again at the little bay. Got food, got fire. Already have had several taps and one nice clicker run. But it's early and we've just bagun.

Salt Water Shore Fishing Reports / Freight-trained at MB
« on: February 29, 2016, 07:59:46 PM »
My eldest son, Michael, and I got a late start Saturday night. Baits in the water around 8pm. Using squid. Lots of single taps from bait molesters and got a couple serious hits,or even resulting in a lost bait.
Then around 10ish, the big pickup happens. Yelled for son, set the hook, and held on. Pass rod over to son who continued to hold on. Told my son to follow his fish only to have it lined up perfectly with the last bouy. Not good. Then, everything halted. My son was convinced he was wrapped around the bouy. Rod was passed back over to me to try to out smart the great unknown. Luckly, we were not wrapped up but we were next to the bouy and not moving an inch. Tried every trick I knew, including the good old freespool. No change.

Began to think that this was a nice Bat Ray that plopped itself comfortably on the mud. Couldn't pull any harder in fear to break the line. Decided to change my angle on it as if I was stuck on a rock. Well, that work very well. Out of nowhere, this kraken continued to freight train and 10 seconds later, pop goes the line on the bouy line. All before I could handle the rod back to my son. Total heartbreak!

The rest of the night was a quiet slide to nothing. Packed it up by midnight.

Early in the session,  had a nice size Leo splash around causing a ruckus. Identified it when I shone a spotlight into the water and saw the back end swim away.

That was the best I have had yet. Luckly, it did stop. A spooling was looking like a reality for some moments.

Here is shot of my son in battle.

Fishing Talk / Scoping beaches
« on: February 24, 2016, 08:43:55 PM »
Just wanted to ask advice.
When looking at potential beaches to fish for grinders and stingers, do you guys look for the same signs as surf fishing  like nice holes, dropoffs, troughs, etc? Or do you set up on beaches near reef edges and known dropoffs outside the breakers?

You guys are the experts and my rate of actually shark fishing the surf is minimal right now. But when I do, I want to know the signs.
I understand the the large waves and seaweed factors, but the others are what I'm interested in.

Salt Water Shore Fishing Reports / Mission Bay New Area
« on: January 23, 2016, 12:00:28 PM »
Last night, my boys and I tried a new spot for us, an old standby for others, De Anza Cove.

Used squid and older mackerel. The bait sealers were out in droves. Some good size smelt pecking away.

Two hits were just larger smelt picking up the bait and being tricky.
Had one really good pickup, felt chomping on the other side, but I was too inpatient.

Had a good time with my boys though. Slow before high tide peak, completely dead after.

A skunk is a skunk. I have a lot of work to do to prepare for Bat Fight.

Salt Water Shore Fishing Reports / San Clemente State Beach skunk
« on: October 17, 2015, 06:43:35 PM »
Hello everyone,

The surf out at San Clemente State Beach was basically until fishable today. Tried two sessions but the tidal surge was too much. Reminded me of Carlsbad north of the Power Plant. Sharp slope with a strong surge that builds up back on the incoming wave and just  crashes down. The white wash would go about 40 to 60 feet before the break. This made for a lot of open unfit able space before your line was actually in the water. Tons of rocks, lost a couple rigs, and the kelp came in the afternoon. Chalk it up to getting more experience.  I really need to work on my casting with the 12 foot rods. Any suggestions for casting on a long rod?

The Boy Scout camping is going well though, which is the best.

Hope everyone's day was good

Salt Water Shore Fishing Reports / Mission Bay Success
« on: October 11, 2015, 01:03:29 AM »
My eldest son and I just got back from a 4 hour session near the Bahia Resort.  My son got his second Bat Ray of the season.  It was another little guy (literally) measuring out at 28". Son was stoked! The little guy fought very hard and made a couple nice runs. I'm stoked because it was the first fish on that rig and setup.
We went through many a bait sealers to get this one and there was no question that this was the right kind.

We hope this is a warm up to next weekend when my boys Boy Scouts Troop camp at San Clemente State Beach,  weather permitting. The surf shark and rays are bigger and meaner than the ones in the bay, or so I've heard.  We can't wait to get our world rocked by one of those bad boys.

Fish On!

Fishing Talk / Soups and Sevens in the Fall
« on: October 03, 2015, 11:04:07 PM »
Do you guys find the Soupfin and Sevengill to bite in the fall like they do in the late spring and early summer?

Do you feel the water is too warm for them?

Salt Water Shore Fishing Reports / Late post: Saturday Night 9-15 Skunk
« on: September 17, 2015, 09:30:13 PM »
 :(
Sorry for the late post. The whole family(2 boys and wifey) tagged along. Fished 3.5 hours.
Fished off Crown Point Park near the bridge. There were SOO MANY people,  it was like summer. The serenity I was hoping for just didn't happen. Many people were interested in what we were trying to catch and were very talkative,  which makes the process of setting up 3 rods slow.

Used defrosted squid and small, whole mackerel, 5-7 inch. Tried combo, double squid and even a squid sandwich (squid, mackerel, squid). I figured go big or go home. We had a few occurrences that made the bell ding and the glow stick briefly dance but nothing actually stuck. A lot of bait picking and stealing. The best chance had the squid taken and the nothing but a mackerel head left, like it was taken by a sea lion. Bummer.

After 5 sessions at that spot, we have only got one small bat, but it was my eldest son's first ever. It is time to find a new spot. I wish we got out more. Time at the water is valuable time.

Any suggestions in the back bay?  Maybe the front bay?

Does anyone have any thoughts of the water being too warm for the bats and Leo's in the bay?

Fishing Talk / Surf/Shore Chumming
« on: September 04, 2015, 01:59:53 PM »
I would like to know your guys thought about this. I know some may practice it but do you find it helpful and are there any hidden rules against it. I'm thinking about surf and bay. Any thoughts?
