Haven't hit the surf in ages. Big surf and other things have kept me away. Had a chance to get out this morning so I seized the opportunity and went looking for a place to fish.
I had a spot in mind that I wanted to try, but I decided to run the coast to get an overview.
As I passed one spot, I was able to see a guy with a set up for big fish in full bendo. I stopped to watch a minute and then noticed a friend talking to him so I hopped out of the truck and headed over to watch. After a few minutes we saw an amazing wad of kelp and grass come in. Between that and the junk on the beach, I knew this was not the place for me and hit the road. Nice to meet you, Brian?, really bad at names, and other things. Hope you got something to make dealing with that salad worthwhile.
Headed along the coast making mental notes. Mostly "weedy" "weedy" "weedy" until I came to a spot that looked fishable and decided to give it a shot. I have tried it in the past, with mediocre or less results, but sometimes you go where the weeds let you.
Cast out a bait and waited. Couple hours go by and I get picked up. Decent fight, and I land a decent 48" class bat.
Make a few more casts and another hour or so of watching the waves and I get a better takedown.
This one fought longer and harder than the first.
I call it 52" range. I really just eyeball them and guess. It really only matters to me once a year, or if I get an absolute monster. Call BS if you want, but I'm pretty legit on my own fish. Might guess short on yours though. You know how it is.
You know the drill. Throw a bait, sit and wait. Lots of pregnant women walking this morning. Must be the drought.
Another takedown, this time with tail slaps. Oh yeah, that's what I like.
A short spirited fight and I bring this baby to shore.
There's a prize at stake, so I bust out the tape, even though I knew it was 4 1/2 feet or so.
That was it except for a couple more pregnant women and a couple clueless surfers. One may have a nice slice in his wet suit leg from the way he kept examining it, but I can't be sure since he never looked in my direction or came near again.
Not a bad morning.
