Poked around at Encino Public Fishing Area in Carlsbad tonight. Caught a mystery fish that I believe might be a largemouth blenny. If it is, it's quite a bit outside it's documented range. It's definitely a new lifer!
http://www.iucnredlist.org/details/183840/0http://maps.iucnredlist.org/map.html?id=183840Opaleye was also a new lifer. They were the most common fish along the rocks, with garibaldi coming in a close second.
Caught a buttload of juvenile kelp bass and barred sand bass. This kelp bass was the only "decent" one.
The rest of the bass were this size.
When it got dark I soaked half a squid on a large circle hook out where I thought the deepest part might be, but other than a few rod twitches it didn't get hit.
Didn't stay too late because we hadn't had dinner yet. Next time I'd like to sit after dark for a few more hours to see what wanders in from the ocean.
