Catch a Saddle, Lose a Saddle (3/20)
« on: March 20, 2015, 06:51:10 AM »
I had to get out there as my last 4 or 5 trips looking for bigger critters have all proven futile.  I needed to get on the board again with some type of shark, so thankfully Steve was available to try the surf again last night.  Steve drove up and down the coast looking for the best conditions and called me when he set up as I was home on kid duty at the time.  He picked a spot I have never fished before, but what the hell, It appeared to have a lot of potential.

The surf was definitely up and their was a fair amount of grass/kelp in the water, but it was fishable. I thought I saw a bite, but missed it as I wasn't too quick on the draw.  The next bite and I'm on!  Not much of a fight, but at least it was a grinner.

I still don't have my power launches down, but I'm getting the baits far enough out for something big.  I get a nice hit and I'm on!  It felt like a nicer model leopard and put a bunch more strain on the rod compared to the last one.  It came crashing at the surface and thrashed around... when the hook pulled.  >:(

We fish a little more with not another bite and packed it in.  It felt good to get out again on the sand and even better to not go home with the skunk.  After all, you got to strike while the iron is hot, and this week the Shark fishing has been hot!

Thanks for reading.

Good to see you out Tom.  Maybe the "fish gods" know it is not yet time for a back bruiser.  We're headed out tonight to soak some fresh bonito, wish us luck.....V

Nice hook up Tom. The surf is up, and there are a lot of weeds still.

Tom, what model is that headlamp you have? How many lumens is it? Battery life good on it?

Glad you found the toothy kind Thomas!
It's all Tom and Don's fault! They "hooked" me on mud marlins and sharks!

It's a cheap $14 light you can get from Home Depot (Rayovac maybe).  It's 110 lumen and bright as hell.  It has 2 setting, where the lower setting give it a much longer life than the high setting, but it is super ass bright and cheap!  They take 3 AAA batteries.
