Summer 7s
« on: August 04, 2021, 09:18:03 PM »
I decided this last week to go fish the usual haunts looking for leopards with some buddies. I managed to stick one medium leopard around 4ft but ended up finding a crazy 7 gill bite. Stuck 3 measuring @ 6.5' 7' 8' and lost countless more on casted baits in 3 back-to-back days. As of today the heavy swells seemed to have sent them packing but what a great burst of action. Wild to think they'd be thick this time of year. Still can't figure out how to post pictures on here but I'd love to share the photos if anyone has advice on how to.

I notice they often come in flurries. Sounds like an awesome week!

As for pics. I use Flickr. Upload to Flickr (they have an app). Click on the photo. Find the Share arrow in the bottom right. Use the BBCode and copy paste a 600x800. They stick a link to your Flickr page onto the IMG link and i trim that but that isn’t necessary.

Yep, Imgur also is another free photo sharing app that works the same way.  Let us know if you need any help posting the pictures.

Awesome 7-gill fishing!  Yep, they usually come in waves so striking while the iron is hot is imperative.  Check out the Surf Shark Board here:

If you could supply some of the additional information you see on here (very general as not to burn spots, but to help with trends and data), I'll get you r 3 Seven's up on the list!

Congrats boss!
You can't catch them from your computer chair.

Excellent!  I'll get them up on the list by this weekend!  Congrats again!

All daylight Sevens also...  Those pictures always come out so much better than the night shots.

Do sevens spawn every three years like soupies?
On a side note, i watched a show from the 1980s where they had thresher sharks inside LA harbor. They said the last time they saw them was in 1972 thru 1973 which was a El Nino period. That would make 16 spawning seasons since 1972 in 2021. Since it was an El Nino period. I'm sure water temps also play a role. I'm ready to start running chum slicks in the harbor to see what I get.

Big thing to remember is that a breeding/ gestation period is for an individual not the entire species. So  in other words, the may only put every three years but not all of them pup in the same year, so breeding and pupping generally occurs every year but not all females in any one year.

Frankly when you look at the science of a lot of the things we fish for the data represented is incorrect, as we know. Generally habitat, range, depth, etc. I know a few guys have helped to tagging and what not, but I'm surprised that there aren't more biologists wanting to enlist the aid of us if nothing more than to tag more specimens for them. As for the Threshers in the harbor, I'd have no doubt there's a number of them at any one time in L.A. Harbor but the open ocean just seems a better bet. Just my uneducated take  :o

Heading to Pismo next weekend for mom’s birthday. Might have to bring my gear and make my son wait in the car for a couple hours. Did it before and he wasn’t too stoked.
