Oh boy.  It looks like things are going to get a little tighter in the spots we can fish.

Salt Water Shore Fishing Reports / Tuesday Night Snoozin (12/6)
« on: December 07, 2016, 06:49:50 AM »
We can't catch a break!  Got out to the surf on our usual Tuesday night and spot one was blown out...

Ran to spot two and had to make the call that it was unfishable and moved onto spot three.

Spot #3 looked great.  No kelp, generally small surf and open beach.  By the time we lugged our gear down there, an entire chopped down kelp forest got pushed into the beach.  Ugh.

Considering how much kelp there was, it was still 50/50 fishable depending on every cast if you landed on a kelp paddy or not.  We would have tried longer if we got any discernible hits, but nothing.  Not even a lobster to steal a bait.

Oh well, we tried.  We called it just about 7 and even that seemed an hour too long.
I'd love to close out 2016 with a big shark, but time is running out.

Until next tide!

Walking way out on a rock jetty is for younger knees.

Amen to that.

Gone are my days of hopping from rock to rock with a 12pk in one hand with my rod and tackle box in the other :(
Your not the only one, I've had to cut it down to a 6 pack myself as well 😄

Age has taught me a "flask" is easier to carry than anything in a can  ;)

LOL

Bummer boss.  It's been a crazy fall/winter and sooner or later one of us that is putting in the time will be rewarded.

We've been experiencing similar conditions down here.

My flu has passed, so hoping to hit the surf soon. Not looking forward to the cold temps though!! What general area are we allowed to bring our own fire? That would definitely make it an easier endeavor.

Propane fires allowed everywhere.

How about wood fires and portable rings?

He's trolling

Any non-state park beach.   ;)

Old trick from working on snow removal equipment for 32 years (on highways where tons of salt was used).  Antifreeze is one of the best Morse Cable lubricants out there.  Unhook one end of the cable and do the following:   cut a small opening in the corner of a large zip lock baggie.  Put the cable in the hole to the point the inner cable is just inside the baggie and on the outside use duct tape to wrap and seal.  Now you basically have a funnel.  Hang the baggie/cable up and put about half dozen tablespoons of antifreeze in and let it hang over night.  99% of the time the next day you have a slick working cable  ;)

BTW......use straight antifreeze, not the 50/50 premixed

Great info Verne.  Thanks!

It is an improvement on trying to use a shorter rod. I got fewer snags and was able to drop the line straight down into tight spots.

No pics but 2 small calicos, one garibaldi, and a small sheepshead. All tossed back

That jetty is a killer if it was the MB jetty.  Maybe soon, you'll find the legal ling hiding in the nooks and crannies.  8)

Nice trout, Binh.  Next week all of the lakes should be stocked to keep pressure off the few lakes that did already.

I think most of the north county lakes have already stocked their first round of trout. Dixon lake just had their trout derby and they put in 6K pounds of trout.

The derby is why I stayed away from Dixon.  Most places only stocked once, and that is not enough for me.  The initial stocking is usually just to feed the bass and get a few people some fish.  The next stock should retain some fish though.

So, got the boat out of storage and the steering is stuck bad. Anyone have any solutions for getting the rod to move again (outboard)?

Propane pencil torch... if that doesn't loosen the grease up on the rod and get it moving, then a new steering cable.

Anyone else having problems logging in? and uploading photos?

Photobucket has been a nightmare lately.  I've been having sporadic times where it would not upload a thing and other times it worked fine... all in a single day.

Salt Water Shore Fishing Reports / The Beach Fire (12/3)
« on: December 05, 2016, 05:53:49 AM »
Well Steve and I hit the surf to see what we could see.  Conditions were very nice, with a little bit of salad attaching to our lines, but would fall off rather quickly and easily.  The fish was another matter.  We fished for 4 hours with only one discernible bite.  Good thing Squatch lugged down the fire ring as having a fire on the beach made the evening an enjoyable one.

Man, this dead zone has been killing everyone.  Every time I think it is starting to turn back on, everything goes quiet again.  Has anyone else been getting out?  Any critter bites or anything out there?

Well, that was that.  Hopefully the next shark session goes a little better.

You guys are part me. I still do it the old fashioned way, but need to look into your tricks.
