Fishing Talk / Re: Butchering a ray for bait?

I was watching a video the other day where the guys were just turning it over, slicing up the wings but keeping the ray intact, adding hooks and throwing it back out. Small rays of course.

Reel Repair & Maintenance / Re: Adding Magnets to a Penn Delmar 285

It has the chrome plated stainless steel spool, when I get home I will post up a picture.

The spool is very heavy and requires a large amount of energy to get spinning up to speed on the cast, Then just as the spool is spinning fast enough, the weight and bait will have lost a lot of inertia and be slowing down already. The same weight that took so much energy to get moving, now requires a lot of energy to slow to keep pace with the slowing of the outgoing line.

This is exactly what happens. I notice the change in sound when the spool spins fast enough that it maxs out but like you said the spool is very heavy and takes quit a bit to slow down and the mono will start to fluff up before it can be slowed down. I have tried stepping down the weight size but then it does not have the pull to get the spool going.

It has always been one of my critter reels but has the line capacity for long runs if I could get farther casts out of it. Works great for boat fishing and is pretty much brand new for its age but willing to Frakenstein it and try to get it to cast better. What sucks is sometimes when the planets align I get some awesome casts out of it just to be pissed off after the next bait check.

I have not hunted in a long time but have been wanting to start bow hunting and trapping. I have been mointoring craigslist and ebay for some good used bows for awhile but have not pulled the trigger. I purchased all of my camping gear before summer started in anticipation of deer season this year but still not there.

Reel Repair & Maintenance / Adding Magnets to a Penn Delmar 285
« on: November 30, 2017, 08:04:47 PM »
I have heard and see posts of people adding magnets to conventional reels but was unsure of the process to do it, the images are gone on the posts. I have a Penn Delmar 285 that is a great reel but since there are no magnets I have to have the spool tension cranked down to throw a 5oz weight with out backlashing. I can loosen the tension and get more distance but then it will almost certainly backlash if I don't apply enough pressure with my thumb to the side of the spool and think magnets will solve this.

I read the post on the Torium 30 but a picture is worth a thousand words.

Any advice or suggestions?

So how do I upload an avatar pic from my iPhone?

You want to get it to your computer. Email it to yourself, then save to pictures and upload. If you need any help resizing/cropping whatever let me know, I've got PhotoShop. You can email me the pic at marketingman@cox.net.

Chip

Whats the size requirement? I tried to add one with link and tried upload and could not get it to take.

I bought the cages last year on ebay. I got like 20 of them for like $2 and free shipping but took like a month to get here from China. The beads I found at hobby lobby and make a nice click sound when they get bounced around. I don't know if it actually makes any difference to the fish but heard the audible click attracts fish so I have always used them with good results and put them on all my rigs.

Yea I will just clip my hooks directly to the swivel, makes it easy to change out hooks and sinker sizes during a session without changing leaders. I will step the hook sizes up or down depending on the bite. When I fish bat rays with it I will usually put a 6/0 on the bottom hook and then a #2 treble hook on the top to catch the smaller fish trying to steal my bait.

I am working on a rig now to make conditions like the grinner gathering fishable and will post it up once I have given it a few successful trial runs.

To bad all the posts under this topic got bombed by photobucket, I wanted to try and tie up some of the other posts.

Here is my critter rod rig.

Since I started using this rig I am only on the squid for a short time before the fresh cut bait arrives. I usually put a big piece of bait in the bucket and then change out the hook and bait size till I figure out what is around. I will run from #6 to 6/0 hooks on it and then move to the long rod for anything bigger, never met a hungry fish that was line shy.

I have used them on mono for a long time but work much better on wire.

What bait are you using for the Leo's? You have put some big ones on the sand. I have just been getting the the baby's all under 12" on the critter rod and would love to get a nice sized one. They don't seem to touch my long rod.

You have to stop with the double hook drop rig and go with either a fish finder or better yet a 3' 3 way with at least a 10/0 hook and a serious chunk of bait, preferably a nice juicy mac head or bonito head.

Big bait, big fish ;D

I love that double drop, just need to make them longer. I think I am going to make up a 6 foot one ;D

Gonna put an order for some heavier duty 3ways

Let me know what you find. I have been searching and cant find any three ways rated over 100lbs.

Seriously?! Mine are rated 165#. Here’s the item number on eBay:  222722936627

Thanks, I ordered two of them. I saw those and was not sure if I was going to get #3 or 3/0 from the title, will find out.
