Operation Back Bay (5/7)
« on: May 08, 2023, 08:06:19 AM »
3-5' swells at 6 seconds and 20 knot NW winds in the afternoon had me just wanting to check out the back bay.  It was calm as hell and probably would have been nice out front, but the calmness of the bay won out.  Operation Halibut and Corvina....

We passed a totally worthless boat. i'm pretty sure there isn't a single rod holder on it.

We covered quite a few miles and ran up to the mid bay, but not a lot of signs of life.  Some bait flickers here and there, but no birds or splashes.  Steve decided to go for some bass while I d!cked around with the LC.

I realized what our issue was in that we really were just targetting something to catch as well as corvina.  We didn't put much effort into looking for halibut, but there should have been some where we were fishing.  I did squeak out a postage stamp, so officially on the board! lol

We moved around and I kept throwing the LC.  I get slammed and I know this wasn't a bass!  Legit Vina!  (Those 3 trebles on the LC are just scary trying to unhook them!)

Bass were hard to come by for some reason, but we did pick up some more corvina.
Squatch on the board!

An occasional bass here and there...

I picked up a swimbait special also along the way....

The bay was like a lake!

We then made another move to actually look for bass and it salvaged the day with both numbers and shear size of them!

All nice models of bass and in the 12 inch range.

My thumb was torn up!  I even got slammed by a fat back bay calico!

Well, we fished until 12:30 and caught our share of fish.  Probably 50-60 in total, so nit huge numbers, but the quality was much better than usual.

A great day on the water before the wind turned on and made white caps everywhere!  It was amazing how things turned so fast.

Well, thanks for reading and until next tide!

There were rod holders on that boat, but the girls were holding a different type of rod.

I think that’s still a pretty darn good numbers day. Sounds like a lot of fun. I should plan a back bay trip soon with the water warming up.

It was beautiful until the fan got turned on. Really surprised at all the nice bass.

That bud zero was better than I thought it would be.

Looking at the near shore buoys down there, your water is 4.5 degrees warmer than ours.  I'm jealous

Well, when I visit my sister in Pismo in august, water down here is 72-75, and the surfers up there are stoked it warmed up to 57.
